Mondays scoter gift
The big find on this dreary Monday turned out to be a waylaid WHITE -WINGED SCOTER on Prospect Lake. Its very unusual to find a sea duck on a freshwater lake ,but there it was in the southwest section by West Island.
First found by Gus Keri, it was initially thought to be a Surf Scoter. This can be understandable confusion --even I have trouble at times- when its a female or young male. When I responded to the scene , finding the scoter gliding away from the West Island Rustic Shelter shoreline, I saw a white sliver along the wing edge. Later, as it settled within the Ruddy Duck flock,my coworker Howard saw the scoter preened itself exposing its wing, confirming the bird to be a WHITE WINGED SCOTER. Later, Janet Zinn got a photo she posted on Facebook New York Birders group showing the full wing spread and its white speculum. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10215544329193401&set=a.1132065233882&type=3&theater
The scoter continued in the southwest confines of the later close to West Island.
This is the first sighting of a White winged since 1964 when that bird spent over 2 months from September to November. A fantastic find by Gus Keri!
On Further analysis , if you focus on the facial field marks, is the position of the white. On a white winged, the white spot is an oval shaped spot above the upper edge of the bill. ON a Surf, its a vertical sliver behind the back edge of the bill.
heres' a good primer http://www.sibleyguides.com/2011/02/identifying-scoters-by-shape/
Below is the records for Prospect White winged scoter, Todays bird is the 3rd PP record.

weekend Orange crowned Warbler
Seen and photod by Charles Tang
Hi Peter,

Hi Peter,
Today was a great day for birding! I was looking for the Orange-crowned Warbler. Finally, I found it at the Lookout Hill, North end of the Butterflies Meadow where there was an
open path early in the morning. It was bounding around very fast. I had only a few seconds and luckily, I got the shot off.

Greenwood better boiding
Greenwood cemetery got the better boiding day over Prospect on this mixed bag day. Rarity is the reason why.
To start off,a DICKCISSEL was reported by Joshua Malbin at the Civic Virtue statue east of Battle Hill Garland Avenue. Then later near the 20th Street entrance, Rob Jett found a VESPER SPARROW nicely photographed by Sean Sime.
Not far from Greenwood as far as the crow flies Bush Terminal Park had its good sparrow. In the far shrubbery section opposite the main entrance, Joshua M found a CLAY COLORED SPARROW. This species is an irregular rarity, usually found in autumn locales.
In Prospect, two waterfowl arrivals. Who loves a coot? Well, there were three I observed this afternoon. Then followed the coots a twosome of Drake GADWALL, handsome ducks to enjoyed. Ruddy Ducks shot up with a number of 22 birds.Karen O found these species early
Of note this morning a late White eyed Vireo and an Orange crowned warbler were mentioned. Both birds were in Lookout Hill Butterfly Meadow.
A cool week upcoming means good birding.

Peter,
The last walk of the season was very productive. Three birders later joined by two others met on a cold and rainy morning but were warmed by good bird activity and friendship. 70 species including eye (and later toe) level Nashville, Pine and blackpol Warbler found by Patti O'kane. Lincoln Sparrow and Purple Finch found by Bobbi Manian, Cape may Warbler and White crowned Sparrow were also observed. A bald cypress with three Cooper's hawks in juvenile and adult plumages rounded out the day. An interesting mix of mid and late fall species. A nice end to another Migration season in prospect park. I enjoy the walks more and more as time goes on It continues to be an honor and my pleasure to represent the Club and give back what was given to me by you and so many others.
Best,
D
