Early Monday morning , Prospect Lake was mostly thinly iced over, not a good omen for finding the latest celebre-the Greater White fronted Goose (GWFG). However, no worry as the morning progressed, the goose was found and happy people were plenty.
Early on , the GWFG was spotted on the eastern Hammerhead stone shoreline for a bit before dropping into the water for Three Sisters Island reeds. There it hung out hidden from view and frustrated faces on several birders, including mine were noticeable just before Noon. However, after I departed ( of course!), I got a text from Matt B that it surfaced and hung out by the middle island of the three islands.
Coming back from lunch at home, I made a beeline for the islands and found out from Charles T and Chris M that the goose swam out just as I arrived ( of course!).It knew i was coming.
But getting quickly to East Hammerhead, we found the GWFG swimming out with the Canada Geese about 100 feet offshore, the flock going westward, eventually heading towards the Hammerhead shore where we all got the best looks of the first GWFG for Prospect history list. So, in retrospect, it wasn't a major Goose chase for me.
In other news, late warblers continue to steal the show for December records. According to Forrest W, he found 6 species today ! WIlsons at south Breeze Hill slope nearest Music Island now joined by a Pine Warbler ;Orange crowned were reported at Music Island and mainland area and Hammerhead where a Nashville has been residing as well. Last was a flyover Palm Warbler and Common Yellowthroat atop Lefrak greenroof ( check Forrest checklist) making it pretty cool birding Prospect nowadays.
