Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) (1)
- Reported Oct 06, 2026 07:25 by Nick Dawson
- Bush Terminal Piers Park, Kings, New York

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S399832176
- Comments: "Juvenile in undulating flight over the park. Grey head, dark wings with those unmistakable white wing patches. Tried to land halfway up a (metal!) light pole, failed immediately and then headed on eastward. Interestingly, the light pole — standing alone in an otherwise open area — would have been perfect for the bird, except that it wasn’t actually a tree. I wonder if such confused behavior from juveniles has been documented elsewhere. Sadly was not quick enough to get photos."

"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."
— George Eliot
