Many blue headed vireos. My first sapsucker and numerous dark eyed juncos.
Phoebes and a greenish flycatcher could not ID.
sparrows: white throated, swamp and song at Vale.
Flyover of 2 turkey vultures. but the hit was the hooded. hope it is refound by Tom.

Hi Peter,

we had a fantastic day!  I think it was the right call extending the walks 2 more weeks.

The 'magic' tree by the picnic tables, when you enter by Vanderbilt, was covered in warblers, highlight being two Cape Mays, we didn't know where to look first.   It was also a great sparrow day, we had white-crowned, great looks at two lincoln's, swamp and white-throated.   The south side of the park was the best but the 2 thrashers continue up on Lookout and there was reasonable activity up there as well.

Here is a pic of the Lincoln's.

Best,
Bobbi

KINGSBOIDER NOTE: " MAGIC tree " is likely the tall American elm adjacent to the short stairs at well drive and West Lake drive junction

some good sparrows come in

Base on reports from birders in the field and a post on ebird, a few good sparrows were in Prospect today.

From the BBC WALK, Lake edge sparrows appeared. At the covered phragmite edge along Weill Drive, A WHITE CROWNED SPARROW was reported. On the other side of Prospect Lake, in the "hammerhead" peninsula--the land mass between West and Three Sisters Islands--LINCOLN SPARROW was observed in open territory.

A report on the rare Ebird alert ( left side bar) the Rink green roof yielded a good sparrow in fact rare after yesterday's White crowned sparrow. Peter Paul reports CLAY COLORED SPARROW. Hopefully the good season is here for the famed green roof.

Brooklyn Falcon Trifecta

Sun Oct 2, 2016 2:29 pm (PDT) . Posted by:

"Matthew Wills"

In Green-Wood Cemetery this afternoon, I spotted a Merlin stirring up the Monk Parakeets near the Chapel. Either this one or another later chased a male Kestrel over Sylvan Water. The Merlin was then harassed from pine to snag and back again by several Blue Jays.

I was observing a Great Blue Heron by then; this was definitely not the same bird as the GBH at the Crescent Water, which was able to fly but seemed to have a bum left foot. The Kestrel meanwhile sprang upon what was probably one of the very few dragonflies flying today.

Soon after I got home, I saw a Peregrine on the cross of St. Michael's RC Church at 4th and 41st in Sunset Park, a reliable neighborhood Peregrine perch.

All in all, a pretty good day for the genus Falco in Brooklyn.

If you didn't get a chance to visit the beautiful Kingsland Wildflower Rooftop Festival last weekend, this Saturday October 8th starting at 5PM, is another opportunity to check out Greenpoint's newest green addition. Visitors will explore the newly installed roofs, enjoy light refreshments, and talk to green roof experts. Renowned environmental journalist Michael McCarthy will do a talk followed by a book signing for his published work "The Moth Snowstorm: Nature and Joy."

Event Details
When: Saturday, October 8th, 2016
Where: Kingsland Wildflowers Roof and Community Space (520 Kingsland Ave, Brooklyn 11222)

Schedule
5:00-6:00PM: Meet and Greet hour + Roof Tours
6:00-6:45PM: Renowned UK environmental journalist Michael McCarthy on "NATURE AND JOY: A NEW DEFENSE OF THE NATURAL WORLD"
6:45-7:30pm: Q&A and book signing of "The Moth Snowstorm: Nature and Joy"

About the project
Kingsland Wildflowers is a Greenpoint community project committed to expanding natural habitat and green corridors native to the New York City landscape. The vision, conceived through partnerships between property owner, Broadway Stages, wildlife experts at New York City Audubon, Greenpoint local landscaping company, Alive Structures and our friends at Newtown Creek Alliance will provide the neighborhood with living and growing infrastructure to support native New York City wildlife. The project also has a specific focus on developing educational programming in the space related to sustainable conservation practices and wildlife protection.

More about Michael McCarthy: The natural world has never been more threatened, from the chainsawing of the rainforests to the gross pollution of the oceans, but our main defenses of nature may not be adequate to protect it in the 21st century, argues Michael McCarthy in his new book, The Moth Snowstorm: Nature and Joy. Instead, he says, we should start to bring to nature's defense the very love we have for it and that our bond with nature, the bond discovered recently by evolutionary biology, that bond of fifty thousand generations, is at the heart of what it means to be human.

Funding provided by the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation through the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund.

Late Sunday prospect walk

I didn't get out till late.  But besides a few warblers,  an outstanding sight for me was  the  perched MERLIN. Sitting still for a good five minutes , kathy n I watched the dark falcon in a partial snag next to the lakeshore near Well Drive junction.

Along the way , we both saw  Parula, black throated blue n green, blackpoll n magnolia warblers in close  proximity.  Later i watched a common yellowthroat male work furtively in the cove facing western 3 Sisters islands.

A drake WOOD DUCK sailed bewteen the Three Sisters Islands.

I could appreciate those several  birds nowadays.
