As reported, red-tail being mobbed by a murder of crows.  Also, a large flock of bluejays chased away a much smaller raptor, from the flash of color probably a kestrel.  Two yellow-bellied sapsuckers, a continuing belted kingfisher at the Dell Water, both kinglets, a couple of eastern phoebes, a few palm warblers, a great blue heron, and many white-throated sparrows.

Migration was evident this morning in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. A Clay-colored Sparrow was feeding on the grass just south of the LeFrak Skating Rink with Chipping and Song Sparrows.

Lefrak Rink roof today

Linda Ewing found ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER feeding with a TENNESSEE WARBLER on a goldenrod. Both species are so similar that a good way to distinguish both is look at the undertail covert color. Orange crowned's is yellow.

I had a few sparrows at the Sparrow bowl,a few White throated and Songs. There was a HOUSE WREN perched momentarily on the fence.

A good group of birders gathered at the pergola and managed to pull out 57 species on a day that saw many birds leave the park.

Highlights were, rusty black bird, white crown, chipping, swamp and savannah sparrows.

Tuesday Wind projection means lots sparrows?

Next Tuesday we are gonna really feel the cold snap !

A northwest north wind is in the forecast Tuesday with potential for that big sparrow numbers that I have yet to see thus far. So keep in mind birding Tuesday into Wednesday might reward you.

But I have another love besides boids: leaf peeping. I'll be doing that in NW CT.

Marie Read's photography of California's iconic Mono Lake and environs reveals the fascinating birdlife of this spectacular birding hotspot, which is a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network site of International Importance. Tufa towers rise above the surface of Mono Lake's highly saline/alkaline water, which teems with brine shrimp and alkali flies. Many breeding and migratory birds, including California Gulls, Wilson's and Red-necked phalaropes, and Eared Grebes are attracted to the feast. Pinyon Jay, Violet-green Swallow, Sage Thrasher, and Lewis's and Black-backed Woodpeckers are among the birds living in the surrounding sagebrush scrub and forests. Marie will present stories from the field and explain how she obtained some of the behavior and action shots featured in her book Sierra Wings: Birds of the Mono Lake Basin. Signed copies will be available for purchase.

Marie Read's photographs and articles have appeared in magazines such as Living Bird, Bird Watching, Nature's Best, and National Wildlife, as well as in books and calendars worldwide. BBG rarities

<------ according to BirdTrax, both CLAY-COLORED SPARROW & ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER were reported in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

This has been a good fall of many observations for the sparrow mentioned above.

Good seeing you in the park.

We had a very small group, probably due to the rain. But notably we had a birder from Belgium and also two from the UK, as well as one from Costa Rica...(Rafael!) All but the Costa Rica guy got multiple lifers, which is always fun.

Eventually the weather cleared and became a nice, blustery Fall day. Unfortunately, there weren't many birds in the park, but after all we were able to dig up 54 species....

The highlights were ten species of Sparrows including 2 Clay-colored, Vesper (not the one at the ball fields), and a white-crowned.

Delayed posting as my phone had a battery issue but here are two good sparrow reports,from Ryan n Tom S.
--Hey Peter just a heads up that the vesper sparrow is on ballfield 5 with a chipping and song. Lots of good flyovers today too - i.e. two peregrine and 9 great blue herons.

Quiet ballfields

The ballfields in Prospect was quiet today saved for a few Palm Warblers, Chipping and Song sparrows. Otherwise a few regular birds.

Lotus reported on her way on from the Bartel entrance a PINE WARBLER . This bird was seen in the pines on the left side of the lot. A HERMIT THRUSH also sped along there.

The weedy border on the Tennis House south side is sometimes active. Nothing rare but for a few SONG SPARROWS, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,and SWAMP SPARROW,

I heard from Kathy Toomey that she and Dennis H had the Vesper Sparrow yesterday afternoon at 545 between field 2 and 3 dugouts; But a no show for today.

Prospects ballfields take first place!

Wide open fields of October attracts good visitors. With Prospects western Long Meadow ballfields one such terrain, today this location took first place for 5 quality birds observed mostly near field diamonds 2 & 3.

First in the extreme eastern corner, Joshua Malbin spotted MARSH WREN. That started the ball rolling.

Then came Sean Sime's catch of a double play. An EASTERN MEADOWLARK followed shortly by a surprising WILSONS SNIPE flushed by passerby. The latter flew out the park westward.

I struck out the previous two birds on my lunch hour. But Will Pollard made a save with the meadowlark plus one around 330 pm.

Along with Meadowlark in the outfield of field 2&3, a VESPER SPARROW hung near the 1st base side dugout,hanging out with 3 SAVANNAH SPARROWS. Unfortunately no one else saw the Vesper. ( Will took a pic)

By now at 4 30 at least 8 birders are looking around and the group finds AMERICAN PIPIT! This bird patrolled near field 2's left foul line with the Meadowlark. Despite all the after school track meets and ballplayers, the pipit and Meadowlark dallied around.

Birders also watched more common birds in the ballfields. PALM WARBLERS were present ; a few WHITE THROATED SPARROWS stayed by field 1; I found CHIPPING SPARROW at field 3.

Eastern Meadowlark didn't have Prospect for it's playing field; Heather Wolf found one at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

A good day for these good birds to play ball!

Peter, Slim pickins today but a few highlights in a 43 bird day for the 6 of us completing the Tuesday walks while Bobbi's counting life birds in Chile.  We had a White-crowned Sparrow (juvie) by LP 249 and there was pretty good activity there.  There was an Indigo Bunting near there as well that offered brief looks.  Later by the Tennis House edges we found a weird sparrow mixed in with a flock of house sparrows and it turned out to be a Clay-colored Sparrow!  Thanks all for a good walk.

Today, October 10, 2017, Monarchs were streaming by the beach at Fort Tilden, Queens at a rate of 160/minute. Doug Gochfeld  had been counting them since 9am and estimates that he saw 35,000 between 9am and 2pm. Attached is a photo and a video.

A lack of reports today for the local area except for Rob Bate's reports of two sparrows. WHITE-CROWNED & rarer CLAY -COLORED are our subjects on this warm day.

The WHITE CROWNED appeared at Well Drive's picnic tables, at Lamppost #249. This was followed later by the CLAY-COLORED on the the south side of the Tennis House, near one of the paths.

- Comments: "Continuing bird found by Will Pollard. First winter bird. Separated from indigo by overall lighter color, light large bill, bold patterning of dark folded flight feathers could be observed on back. Bird made a brief appearance in a small oak at back of home and native grassland. I was also lucky enough to spot Will Pollard. "
