Hi Peter,

Such a beautiful day today. Great Fall weather.
The birds were a bit clumpy, though. But eventually we had some good sightings.
I've never seen so many Palm Warblers, easily 100+ in the park. Also 30 or so Wood Duck in the pools area. Other highlights: Orange-crowned and Tennesse by the containers near the Well House;  15 species of warblers in all; a crazy purple-laced Mourning Cloak butterfly; 2 Prairie Warblers, a White-crowned Sparrow on the LeFrak, lots of Yellow-rumps and some White-throated Sparrows....

Here's the list. I'll send some photos later today or tomorrow, including that butterfly.

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Peter,

today was the final Tuesday walk.  We had a very good day, it was active (with warblers) all around the lake.  But where are the sparrows???  We saw the green-winged teal and a very cute CARW with no tail, which gave us a start for a moment.

best,
Bobbi

Lincoln in the cove

With no intention of birding hard, I needed getting out for a two hour walk through southern Prospect. Besides I knew birds were so few on this Sunday afternoon so what the heck.

First stop was the West island cove where I stood at the south edge in front of thick native Beggar Ticks plantings in the cove. This species is a favorite for sparrows. A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT peeked through, munching away seeds plucked from within. It was at this point I noticed movement behind the warbler. Patience being my virtue, a sparrow appeared in a confined window within the large Beggars Tick plant. Enough time given me enabled me to identify the sparrow as a LINCOLN'S. I could see well its buffish breast. My time is rewarded, a small victory on this quite overcast day.

Nothing else appeared as i made my counterclockwise circuit of Prospect Lake. I did pick up Song Sparrow behind 3 Sisters and a last sparrow,a Swamp at the marsh area in front of Well Drive shipping containers. Oh I almost forgot to include the very drab CAPE MAY WARBLER  in " Willow swamp" before Three Sisters; that patchy swamp area is below a big Willow Tree.

Enjoy the week which will be rainy I heard..☔

Peter,

Best day of birding this fall with 65 species and 16 warblers. The highlight was a lark Sparrow found on the hammer head by John Dean. One more to go this season hoping more Sparrows make an appearance next week.

http://birdcast.info/

Wow, looks like Saturday gonna be a very good birding day.

Enjoy wherever you go

Sparrowbowl Chat

A text tweet that somehow mysterious ly escaped me yesterday found my way a day later with a reported YELLOW BREASTED CHAT in Prospect's Sparrowbowl.

Seen again today, the Chat put in a few brief views in the depressed area situated between the Tennis and Picnic Houses. So reputed as a terrific Sparrow locale - hence the name- the chat feels right at home in this richly restored site replete with flowers grasses and shrubs and trees in the background.

Tomorrow's cold wind from the north may be a great time to bird the Sparrowbowl after the dog run curfew.

Hi Peter,
Wet....very wet....but actually also really birdy, especially at the southern end of the park. There seemed to be a very large flock of warblers, including maybe 20 Northern Parulas, that were slowly going South starting around the West Island area. Once they hit the lawn near the rink they turned around and streamed somewhere north, maybe to start the route again.

It was really a very nice Fall day, with lots of wild flowers, albeit a little cold. (one or two of our group may have suffered hypothermia...??!)

We had 17 species of warblers including Tennessee, Wilson's, Blackburnian, a Nashville on the LeFrak roof, 1 Pine, lots of Parulas, and the beginning of the Yellow-rumped invasion...Also a female Wigeon near the peninsula west of west island.

Here's the list.

Its fall...time to plant

One way to help birds is plant native herb, grasses and flowers... one select group are pollinator plants that help butterflies and bees and a wide variety of insects for the insectivore birds.  heres a helpful link if you have a yard, or greenspace...

Sylvan Water"spout"

Sylvan Water in Greenwood Cemetery really hit the sweet spot today . And birds found there were all rarities on all sides of the big pond.

On the pond's south side the LARK SPARROW continued from yesterday's Border Ave spot; then unknowingly a bird photographed turned out to be a DICKCISSEL found on the west area; then add a SUMMER TANAGER above Sylvans north ridge; all these birds were found by Paige Linden- Brams. Finally on the south slope with Chipping sparrows, Tripper Paul found a CLAY COLORED SPARROW.

WHEW.. now that's a waterspout there.  😄
