Nice day for a walk in the Park.  The large flock of Canada Geese is the big thing around the ballfields, one of them has a neck band (orange, with the Y3T4 code in white)(see photo attached).  A lonely Merlin was spotted perched near the Lower Pool. The lake was semi frozen, and mostly Ring-billed Gulls, and the regular waterfowl. The feeder did not have any sps worth mentioning, the same folks feeding there.
On my way back, a large dark bird flew over the Nethermead, first I though it was a Hawk, but it landed on a tall tree in the Ravine, and started to vocalize:  1 Common Raven (my first for the Park).  I took some pictures (see them below) to probe its presence in the park. The sighting was ±12:25 pm.

A Redpoll in town tops the Canada Geese observations (Prospect)

I was in the midst of writing the Canada Geese report on the ballfields during my lunch hour when Rob Bate's twitter tweet came thru: A COMMON REDPOLL  !  A single bird was spotted on the mugwort next to the Well House Drive shipping containers ( where two are present ) by a dirt mound ( used for the ballfields) . Hurrying down in my slow Toro, I parked my vehicle a ways on Well Drive to avoid spooking the Redpoll , and walked the rest of the 300 feet .But in vain, as I approached , the REDPOLL took off a mere 10 seconds away before I got there. It took off across the Lake to the south side  as Rob Bate observed it.Well ...drat to that.

With Redpolls reported in East end Long Island and Staten Island, its good bet they or the single bird  may stick around. The feeders is one very good spot for thistle is their favorite staple along with birch catkins and sweetgum trees. Check also the latter in the park, one site is the trio by West Island rustic shelter for example. Good luck and report to me if you can.

The ballfields are loaded with Canada Geese, at least 400 birds but among them some interesting observations.

One includes Karen O'Hearn's variant LESSER CANADA GOOSE with some intermediate types , the bird seen yesterday on Prospect Lake. Its smaller than the surrounding typical birds. It also from my vantage has a darker overall complexion especially on its back. There are variables regarding plumages with this subspecies.

Second, theres now a Canada Goose with a orange neck band. Y3T4 was the code and I sent this info in to Patuxent Bird Band Lab. 2-4 weeks before a reply comes back.

Kingsboider note:  The last Redpoll sighting In Prospect was 4/6/2013. Along the Zoo perimeter observer Keir Randall .Winter 2012/2013 was a very good season with over 25 reports in Prospect park beginning 12/3 peaked with 7 seen Jan 6th 2013

prospect short walk

Changing weather sunny first then a snowflurry squall and my lack of proper winter gear did get me seeingal lone hen AMERICAN WIGEON on ProspectLake west shoreline. Many Shovelers some American Black Duck was all I could find. Not a special bird day but getting out to enjoy winter climate except for that nasty squall with the very brisk wind sent me back home...

Just around the lake, stopping at the feeders and the sweetgum trees on the south shore. The Red-tailed and the Cooper's were both perched near the Maryland Monument, ignoring each other.

Fwd: maybe yes/maybe no: cackling goose?

Kingsboider opinion: this is likely a variant LESSER CANADA GOOSE subspecies..bill still too long not stubby for cackling as well as head shape too gradual here

hey Peter,
i was in Prospect around 8 AM and spotted this mini-goose.  i had just enough time to shoot off a few frames before it flew off to the north and then out of the park.  maybe a "least" but it was ultra small.

hope you're out birding.  i'm hoping to get out again later today!

Hi Peter,

Tom S and I stopped by Bush Terminal today after spending the morning on the waterfowl count with Tom P along Gravesend and DO/CIC.  The EUWI and CORA did not put in appearances, but we did see two Purple Sandpipers, which are a new species for me at this site.

Best,

It was a good day for raptors in Brooklyn. This morning I saw a Peregrine over Pier One at Brooklyn Bridge Park and Brooklyn Heights and a Cooper's Hawk over the BQE and Congress St., a block from my apartment, scaring up local flocks of pigeons. In the afternoon on Terrace Bridge in Prospect, we watched a Merlin harried from tree to tree by one to half a dozen Blue Jays, finally chased away from area of the bird feeders. This was the third weekend in a row I've seen a Merlin in Prospect. A Red-tailed Hawk was noted over Quaker Ridge and a Peregrine was perched on the FDNY tower on Washington Ave. Walking across the Gowanus, I saw a Red-tailed hawk perched on the top of St. Agnes Church in Carroll Gardens. Last weekend also had a RTH up there as well.

From raptor country,

Matthew

raptor coolness

The walk home from work these days are very much quiet with winter in control. So, a fun walk it was today with three raptors out.

I passed by the pines at the southwest corner of the Nethermead. It did have a Redtailed hawk last week well hidden close to the trunk . Today, i didn't see anything from below and walked on but decided to look back from a distance. And in that pine there was a hawk. It stared at me suddenly wary of me and took off from its close conifer confines. Off towards a tree in the lullwater, i noted it was a juvenile COOPERS HAWK.

And later now I'm past the frozen lake with only an opening at the south end. Viewing that opening full of Northern Shovelers,i turn towards home, passing under the trio sweetgum trees where sparrows gathered to feed upon the ground seeds. While watching the birds ,suddenly a flash and all the birds flew into the phragmites including one over sized bird perching in the phrags as well.I was curious and after a moment realized it was an immature SHARPSHINNED HAWK!
It obviously failed catching a sparrow and then flew off after towards the Horse Tamers park circle entrance.

The third raptor was the Redtailed Hawk over the ballfields where hordes of canada geese don't care what's above.

We have great news!  We have added a new port to our regular schedule.  In 2015 we have several trips departing Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY board the Brooklyn VI.

The Brooklyn VI is a modern, fast, 110' long and 26' wide super cruiser.  It is one of New York's largest fishing boats, and is newly repowered with 3 engines allowing it to achieve a maximum speed of up to 27 knots. The Brooklyn VI can accommodate up to 132 passengers. Although we'll never use its full capacity, the boat is spacious and comfortable.  Its cabin can seat 100+ passengers, is air conditioned for our summer trips, and is heated for our winter ones.  The Brooklyn VI also has a full operational galley.

We're very excited about this new relationship with Captain's Robert and Mike of the Brooklyn VI.

Thank you so much for your continued support of all things pelagic, and we look forward to seeing you aboard.

Finally, the weather and temperatures were a little better, and a walk to the park was a good way to see the changes in the park.  First, most the open waters were frozen, with small areas open in the lake, and also at the upper pool.
The best site  with a lot activity was the feeders of Breezy Hill.
My best bird for the walk, a lonely Red-breasted Nuthatch visiting the feeders.

About the Statue where bird club meets for migration walks

At  Grand Army Plaza's Prospect entrance.

Most people think of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as chiefly responsible for the existence of Prospect Park, but in 1891 the Brooklyn community recognized the paramount role of James S.T. Stranahan, who as president of the Brooklyn Park Commission persuaded Vaux to submit a design, hired Olmsted & Vaux Company as designers and construction supervisors, protected them from political pressures, and provided the ultimately over budget funds to create the Park.

At left is a photograph of the monument to Stranahan just inside the Grand Army Plaza entrance before it was cleaned by the Parks Department’s Monuments Conservation Program.   The inscription on the 124-year-old pedestal is quite worn away. Within the wreath Stranahan is called “a citizen of Brooklyn, honored for many noble services.”  But this monument serves a double, almost contradictory duty. While the visitor gazes at the full-size bronze figure and reads of this “chief founder of Prospect Park,” the curling “ribbons” at the four corners instruct the visitor to do something else (in Latin, however):

                        LECTOR SI
                              MONUMENTUM
REQUIRS
CIRCUMSPICE

The translation is “Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you.”  Prospect Park, in other words, is declared to be Stranahan’s true monument.

Monument to J.S.T. Stranahan, date unknown.

Peter, I think you stay much more informed about this than I do, so you've likely seen this, but just in case not … New parks are always good, of whatever size/scale! Happy new year! Chris
