After Michelle Dreger retired from leading the Saturday Beginner Walks for 15 years we were lucky to have Cyrus Baty step up and lead these past few years. Sadly, Cyrus has decided to move back to Missouri where he will pursue other adventures. We are all so grateful for his service to the community and the club. 

Since we will not have a dedicated leader at this time, I am asking for volunteers to fill in where necessary since I will not be able to lead every week. If we can get a pool of volunteers it would only require leading on the occasional Saturday perhaps once every month or two. 

Leading the beginner walks is fulfilling in it's own way, especially when you get to see that spark ignited in new birders. Volunteers do not need to be expert birders or seasoned leaders, as this is a great way to gain some experience and push yourself to learn more, not only about identification but about all aspects of bird behavior (you will get every question under the sun). In addition it is a great way to learn and practice public speaking and leadership skills that can translate to your career or other endeavors.

And to quote from the ABA code of ethics: 

Birding should be fun and help build a better future for birds, for birders, and for all people

Birds and birding opportunities are shared resources that should be open and accessible to all

Birders should always give back more than they take

Here is your chance to give back, and educate people about birds and the importance of preserving their habitats.

If you are interested in volunteering to be in the rotation, please email me at tinamariealleva@gmail.com. The Saturday walks are at noon and last about 2 hours. Binoculars will be on loan in the boathouse to hand out and collect after each walk.
