A solitary morning walk

A dreary overcast sky with a
chippy wind didn't deter me from enjoying Prospect birds. After a week leaf peeping in the Catskills and much driving, a walk does me good.

First boid to greet me was a Hermit thrush. The thrush responded to my phishing, perching on a fence at the Hammerhead base of the lake's south shore.

Better yet,the lake has ducks. Our annual arrival of Northern Shoveler has begun.
Winter residency favors this species; a starting count of 27 shovelers formed a tight flock in the lake middle. I also found threes each of American Wigeon and American Black with a single Ruddy Duck off to the west.

Further on after seeing just Catbird on Lefrak greenroof, Dennis tweets out a report of Lincoln and White crowned sparrow at the Audubon center upper slope. I arrived, running into Dennis and his last walk group. But I didn't see those birds; instead I did observed 3 Chipping, Song and White throated mingling among the House Sparrows and Robins. A Yellow rumped warbler put in an appearance. There were other birds but it's tough for me to see them in the thick foliage.

Lastly I stopped by lamppost 249. A phish and I was rewarded with a Palm Warbler and Winter Wren just behind the fence. My circuit completed, my trek was a post vacation success.

In other news:

Reading mostly tweets, there were some notable sightings: Solitary sandpiper on a Duck Island snag; both cuckoo species at Greenwood cemetery crescent water; Yellow billed cuckoo at the Vale Cashmere; 15 late Broadwinged hawks flying over Greenwood; 10 species Warblers reported by Dennis in the vicinity of rink south lawn perimeter including Nashville and Tennessee; White crowned and Field sparrow with 7 species Warblers in Fort Greene park, nice to know my old neighborhood park is getting raves.

Sunday promises to be a productive chipper day, definitely worth birding in the crisp air.

Hi Peter

we had a good walk today with the picnic tables, the south side of the lake and the hammerhead being the most active.  Then it immediately died down from 3-sisters around thru LeFrak.  There were enough birds to keep everyone's interest and we decided to extend the walk one more week to next Tuesday.

best,
Bobbi

Hey Peter,

I led the first Sunday Audubon walk today. There were 10 of us, including a couple first-timers, and although the park was relatively quiet we found a few pockets of activity on Lookout and Peninsula. We had 43 species in total.

Summary of todays birds

With sparrows not making yet a dent for numbers in our northern Brooklyn parts, warblers flourished at Greenwood Cemetery.

At the elm tree known for its reputation along the fork at  Sylvan Waters northwest side, the tree came alive with warblers. Sean Sime reported a number of Black poll warblers supported by Yellow rumped warblers and several Red Breasted Nuthatches. The latter has been irrupting this fall, a handsome species most welcomed to see.

Meanwhile, there was reported  Purple Finches also in nice numbers this fall  and Lincolns Sparrows in Prospect Park, location unknown.

Per Sean sime

Magic Tree at Sylvan in Greenwood loaded. Dozens of Blackpoll and YRWA. At least 3 CMWA and 6-8 RBNU. And that is only on the trunk and lowest branches!

Citizen Science Opportunity: Point Counts in Brooklyn

Our colleagues at North Shore Audubon are seeking a winter Brooklyn birder to help with the ClimateWatch project it is coordinating, part of a National Audubon Society citizen-science initiative. A dedicated volunteer is needed between January 15 and February 15, 2019, to visit 12 specific sites (points) in Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery where they think nuthatches may be seen. At each point the volunteer must stand stationary for five consecutive minutes and record all birds heard and seen. Records from each of the 12 points, which must be at least 200 meters apart, is entered on eBird. The project coordinator will provide details and further information.

If interested, please contact Peggy Maslow of North Shore Audubon at pmaslows@gmail.com.

We could use your help again at a planting/weeding event at the Jean Bourque Return-a-Gift Pond Bird-blind site at Floyd Bennett Field.

  • Saturday, October 13
  • We'll remove invasive weeds from the areas planted last fall and put in additional herbaceous native plants.
  • Meet at 9am at the parking lot at the entrance to Floyd Bennett Field. You'll be directed (or brought) to the site from there.
  • Bring a lunch and something to drink unless having to leave early.
  • Tools will be supplied, but you're welcome to bring a favorite trowel or other planting or weeding tool if you'd like.
  • Contact Ron Bourque - by email ron.jean11@verizon.net or phone (718) 986-7634 - to let us know you'll be coming. He'll answer any questions too!

I may have had a glimpse of the clay-colored but it was very quick and I lost it. Still on Sylvan South Slope, by newly renovated monument. Very birdy, usual suspects + cape May.
