Hi Peter-
Just checked Bobbi's list from the walk and want to add a few species I got at the north end of the park Tuesday morning.
There was a Cape May at the top of the rise on the path going up to Rose Garden from Grand Army Plaza. A Worm eater in the Vale north end behind the benches next to stairs and a Scarlet Tanager (yellow) just after the wood play area in Nellie's lawn going toward the Pass Eagle statue. A juvenile Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, a Chestnut sided warbler and some flycatchers Empidonax over the dead end of the old horse path stopping under the road opposite the mulch pile area.

Hi Peter,
Today was defiantly slower than last week. Luckily we had a sharp-eyed crew of about 12 to spot the birds that were around. We had a chipping sparrow and prairie by the picnic tables, a female rose-breasted grosbeak on lookout and 2 parulas by duck island. Gus spotted the spotted sandpipers walking around in the grassy area by the 'rail yard' just off the water - interesting behavior.
here's hoping for some good winds before Saturday!

Common nighthawk alert
There was a posting on my facebook of a survey taken between 6 -8 PM, of 102 birds counted by birders in Albany Pine bush park.
Even without north winds,the nighthawk is migrating; its worthy a try tonite to check Prospect's potential from Long meadow by the tennis house or the south nethermead.

hard work and patience
Hard work and patience was the name of the game even as a weak front north wind came thru during early morning hours.A small trickle of warblers were scattered sightings ,hard to see in the dense foliage for today's birders in Prospect Park.
Highlighting warblers, the continuing CAPE MAY and a PRAIRIE were seen today. Cape May still is hanging out at the Peninsula shelter big pines. Found by Ryan Goldberg and friends,it was a tough bird to see with the strong back light and high up movement. The Prairie spotted by Kathy Toomey hung around Arleen's Pines adjacent to the Butterfly Meadow.I had no luck spotting this bird.
Other warblers around Lookout were usual: AMERICAN REDSTART,COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,BLACK THROATED BLUE, and OVENBIRD.
There's a RED BREASTED NUTHATCH In town. It too hung around Butterfly Meadow,but moved north to the slope of the hill's West flank where Kathy refound in the big pine,the nuthatch feeding from a pin e cone.
NORTHERN FLICKER and Red bellied woodpecker added to the hilltop list.So was seen SWAINSONS THRUSH in the Paper mulberry up from the Maryland monument top steps.Veery was seen earlier above the Wellhouse.
I guess it's not too early to see NORTHERN SHOVELERS. Early ducks that they are,three of them glided along in the lake Northwest section following a single bird yesterday. Winter dreams for the summer weary is a cool idea?

Hi Peter,
Well, we had a good-sized group today. Unfortunately the birds forgot to show up...well, actually we did have some good sightings. But all in all it was a bit slower than last week.
We did have 8 species of warblers including Blue-winged and Chestnut-sided along with Red-breasted Nuthatch and a Veery.
Other than the Blue-winged and Chestnut-sided, the bird of the day might have been a Zabulon Skipper (photo attached)

Slow time for the Cuckoo
On this slow day for birds, no surprise with southward winds, BLACK BILLED CUCKOO capped the day.
update on the tern:
It was FORSTERS TERN seen yesterday..Howver viewing Paige's list, SNOWY EGRET was also seen, a rarity for the park..A Good one.
Kathy Toomey on her irregular usual late day foray into the park, found the cuckoo along the Ravine Ambergill creek mere feet from the Esdale Bridge. She said it was low and provided excellent views. Sometimes that's how one finds a secretive cuckoo when least expected. For Kathy it was her second sighting under two days as she was with the BBC group that saw the same species at Well Drive Lamppost 249.
Otherwise it was very quiet. I got a secondhand report of a tern species at Prospect Lake. I will await details or find out myself soon enough.

Natural History, will present highlights from more than 40 years of research,
monitoring and habitat support of the nesting Roseate and Common terns on Great
Gull Island in Eastern Long Island Sound. Currently a record 9,500 Common tern
pairs and 1300 Roseate tern pairs nest there. Discovery of abnormal nestlings
sounded the early warnings on toxic levels of PCBs in the Sound in the 1970’s. A
large number of volunteers assist during the breeding season, and the project
has partners in South America where they discovered the first concentration of
Roseate terns in the non-breeding season.

Northwest wind yields birds
What started off slowly led to a fine moderate yield of migrating birds, with the Tuesday BBC inaugural fall walk the beneficiaries of at least 11 species warblers and the highlight of rare BLACK BILLED CUCKOO the prize.
The Cuckoo was found along Well Drive near the picnic tables Lamppost 249) .it Sat out in the open and even preened. A great photo by Janet Zinn is on the BBC Facebook page.
Reports of AMERICAN Redstart, Magnolia WARBLER , Black throated Green Chestnut Sided warblers were earlier single sightings ,whereas Lookout Hill summit meadows were unexpectedly quiet just after sunset to 8 am. But fortunately later for the BBC group with patience were rewarded with a moderate scattere production of birds here and there.

According to my weather app, NW winds
blows steady topping 14 mph at one point all day into tomorrow morning.
This is the favorable wind for fall migrants.

My Dark skies weather app says after rain tonight till midnight or past ,the wind shifts NORTHWEST about 4 am at 11 mph steady in that range.

Golden sighting
After leaving the meadow area , Phil ran into Linda Ewing and both headed back to the Hill top for the bird. But it cooperated with its sighting at the dirt switchback trail by the Maryland Monument, this GOLDEN WINGED reappearing in the brush next to the trail for a brief spell before it flew upward the slope parallel to the Monument stairs. I missed out shortly after reading the twitter tweets. It has not been reported since as the day got warmer.

Hi Peter,
We had a very small group today, but the birds were great!
At first I thought our bird-of-the-day was going to be a caterpillar...but then birds started showing themselves or calling and it went on and on all day.
The highlights were 10 species of warblers including both Waterthrush, Cape May, Blue-winged, N Parula, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia. We also had calling Alder and singing Willow and perching Yellow-bellied! There were 3 great-blue Herons and a Great Egret attending what we heard was a fish die-off; and we also had a singing White-eyed Vireo.
All in all a surprisingly birdy day.
