Note ring necked &wood ducks, black vulture, sharp shunned and Cooper's hawks, common merganser today

Sundays hilight

The hilight today has been the drake Eurasian Wigeon at Bush Terminal Pier Park.

Described as a classic handsome bird , this notable duck was reported in the four main coves of the park. One report I read placed it near the osprey nest platform ,then two coves north at the dilapidated pier. Its best if the duck hangs around check all the coves of this small coastal park.

Update bird feeders

The last delivery of bird sunflower seed was delivered to my home tonight. This seed should last till spring equinox when feeders will end.

To conserve the stock, every Friday I will refill the feeders.

Spring is coming : plants should be sprouting soon and insects hatching as well.

And several nice birds like common merganser, wood ducks, Bufflehead, purple Finch, hermit thrush, gc kinglet, Merlin, American kestrel, yb sapsucker....and the nice sizable flock of cedar Waxwings ( flagged by Ebird for numbers and timing)

I haven't post my BBC walk yet until my participant s look at it..

Hi Peter,

I saw a Robin today that caught my eye.  White throat, no streaking at all. Do you think it's partial leucism or just individual variation? The rest of the bird looks typical.

NYC harbor herons report

https://nycaudubon.org/blog/harbor-herons-wading-bird-surveys-a-peek-into-new-york-city-s-wild-side

Cedar waxings aplenty!

Cedar waxwings are favorites for me because their sleek hairdo Fonzie look combined with their subtle gray brown plumage and strong face feature makes this bird a delight to watch. Plus their energy especially in winter along with their tenacious eating style forces me to just stand , watch and admire.

I reached out to Kathy Toomey what she described as an extravaganza the true numbers. She said -- conservatively-- sixty but more likely 100!

Sheeeesh.... I have to get over there! ( You too!) 😆

PS. It's the Vale of Cashmere, especially the ground puddles from the south end..as well as low tree perches.

Be my Valentine on Prospect Lake

Likely as nature intended it on this romantic day celebrated by humans, the Mergansers had their own idea.

From the wellhouse, i spotted two distant whitish bodied ducks on the lake. And so, out of curiosity I investigated. Upon a closer look from the Peninsula meadow shoreline, my observation was confirmed: the long waiting hen Common Merganser has found her Valentine, a drake has joined her. Both lovely dovey birds were romancing in front of Three Sisters Islands at 235.. What happened next, i don't know (wink wink). 😉

Prospect lake ducks

The hen Common Merganser continues its stay mostly in the lakes east half. It should be in its third week visiting here.

Both Ring necked and Bufflehead drake ducks hung out together within the confines of Three Sisters Islands when I saw them after 1 pm. I missed the merganser.

Prospect feeders

I received a note that the feeders are empty. I've been aware they would be Monday based on a Friday observation.

Unfortunately I have no seed at our work nursery and a 40 pound bag was delivered to my home Saturday last.  The earliest I can refill is Friday morning when I can drive my car Thursday incurred by mandatory alternate side parking; and secondly I'm at an all day horticulture conference  Thursday.

Sorry folks but that's the best I can do. Too many Grackles and house sparrows empty those feeders quite quickly.

PP Dickcissel refound!

In likely the same bird that disappeared a month ago,  Radka refound the Dickcissel on the mainland opposite Duck Island  along the southeast shore near a red rescue ladder. This area by the rink  is weedy brushy habitat on that shoreline.

Good to see the bird stuck around....assuming its the same bird.

Common merganser sticks around

Having no luck during the weekdays at work, finally today the hen Common Merganser sticks around into the afternoon.

With short time on time as I wanted to get back home to see the NBC winter Olympics showing my fave sport cross country skiing, I made a quick run for the hen merganser. The wide open waters on Three Sisters islands east side has been the home for the rare duck for awhile now. It was quite windy, winds whipping across Prospect Lake. Leaning against a tree serving as my wind block, I finally found my nemesis bird sleeping just off the Peninsula Thumb. Eventually it woke up and waded away from the ice edge , occupied by many Canada Geese. So it was a worthy walk seeing a gorgeous bird with ,a good result before me heading home in a circuit around the lake towards the feeders.

There was a report of Ring necked Duck on the lake this morning for your interest.

Numerous Grackles continue to clean out the feeders quickly. Not a good thing as it's tough to keep refilling more than once weekly with my busy work schedule.

Have a good Sunday.

Janet Schumacher

I received sad news that Janet passed away peacefully last evening after a long battle with cancer.

For birders and readers here who knew her, I'm obliged to pass along word .

The Brooklyn Bird Club whom Janet was a huge part of --her family-  was to the club's great benefit will announce her passing on their website and social media.

I counted Janet among my good friends, one who attended many of my bird walks and trips particularly the weekend trips that were so memorable. She had a quiet compassion and kindness to everyone she met.Janet possessed a good heart with loyal, dependable qualities to friends and most appreciably to the Brooklyn Bird Club, her love.

She was a major part of Brooklyn bird club activities serving recently as a Clapper Rail newsletter assistant and contributor. When I was club president, I was greatly thankful for her role in the club's centennial year of 2009 and it's June celebratory dinner that year, besides many other years she helped.

Janet had grit and a Wisconsin toughness when it came to winter walks and I was delighted to see her on those walks.

In one particular weekend to Rhode island we 4 members Janet was part of ,trudged on despite -20 degree weekend wind chills and 28 miles later in three days, it was ,nevertheless, a fun memorable trip in that we saw 20 species ducks including Tufted Duck and Barrows Goldeneyes, 90 plus Harlequin Ducks and Short eared owls. It was a character building trip that championed the human spirit.

 Janet, Requiesce in pace

I won't forget you and thanks for the memories..

Peter.

High Path Avian Flu

From Prospect Park Landscape Mgt Office Marty Woess

Hi all,

I have been asked by the rangers to check out and collect any dead swans, ducks, geese, gulls, crows and raptors that we find in the park. High Path Avian Influenza (H5N1) was recently detected along the east coast and DEC needs to examine any bird of interest.

If you find any of the birds in the list above please do not touch. Contact me and I'll come over, assess and collect the bird for testing. If you are unable to identify what bird it is, take a photo and send it to me. Also if you are unable to stay on site, please take a GPS location or pin.

Thanks.

Gong Xi Fa Cai to all who celebrate!

I just received a link to a checklist (https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S101846914 ) from Anthony Collerton who asked me to take a look at a Gull that to him did not seem right for LBBG and thought it looked good for a Slaty-backed Gull.

Anthony's suspicion was spot on. The bird in this checklist identified as a LBBG is indeed a 3CY (3rd Calendar Year) Slaty-backed Gull.

I am sure many of the CP regulars will be on the lookout. Please post regular updates to your various groups and remember to cross post here to the list serves.

Congratulations to the original finder and well done by Anthony in acting on his instincts. I myself will have to trek into CP to twitch this bird, if it sticks 😬

Cheers,
