I just read that President Dennis Hrehowsik posted a note that the Brooklyn Bird Club sponsored teams collectively raised $15,756 for the ACJV Saltmarsh Sparrow project .

Look at what I found this Monday on one of the bushes growing in planter boxes against the side of my building, a Great Spangled Fritillary.

Have you seen any in the park?

KB NOTE: The great spangled fritillary (Speyeria cybele) relies exclusively on native violets (genus Viola) as its larval host plant. Females lay eggs on or near the plants in late summer, and the newly hatched caterpillars overwinter before feeding on the fresh spring leaves. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Renown ornithologist and naturalist Guy Tudor passed away

 News from Don Riepe 

Sadly, my good friend and mentor Guy Tudor passed away yesterday at 91. I hope we can arrange a memorial bird/butterfly/wildflower walk and party in his honor sometime in late September (his birthday is September 23rd). He was a world-renowned bird artist and recipient of the MacArthur Award. I was looking forward to our 90 and 95 year birthday bash! Oh well, maybe in another alternate world! Rest in peace, brother!

kb note: Guy was well known to older generation like myself, a most excellent butterfly expert as well connected to the Brooklyn Bird club...RIP

I learned this morning that Guy Tudor has passed away. Guy was an accomplished bird artist and naturalist. Among other things, he was a MacArthur Genius award winner, first president and host of the New York City Butterfly Club, and co-author with Rick Cech of the “Butterflies of the East Coast” book.

 

Guy will be missed by many.
