A quick late afternoon trip to prospect lake as the sun was setting was all the time I needed to enjoy some special ducks.
Three pairs of Hooded Mergansers were observed by me. The first pair I spotted emerged from behind a water snag at the shore of the Hammerhead peninsula be West island. That pair eventually joined the pair at Three sisters islands. But the third pair was closest to me affording me great looks of the drake in courtship,it's head crest fully displayed. When the birds are close,you can see all the details.
Adding to the scene , a drake Ring-necked Duck glided behind the third pair deep inside West Island cove.
It's getting to be that time of year when ducks return and possibly stopping in on the lake

We captured a Little Brown Bat at lunch time in our Prospect Park Tennis House office .. It was on a jacket next to mine on the hall way coat rack before it alighted and flew around in the stairway hall. Pretty cool. We netted it and released it outside... 🦇

Blackbird feederfeast
"Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye, Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. When the pie was opened the birds began to sing, Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?"
My Prospect feeders are like a feast table, an actual pie for blackbirds bursting upon the scene:hence an analogy to the famous nursery rhyme often told to us when we were toddlers.
I refilled the feeders this morning as usual for the weekend. It took me about ten minutes and I didn't see much;of course I really wasnt looking well. When I left with one of the empty feeders to my work vehicle to fill from a very heavy bag, I turned around towards the feeders and lo and behold there's at least 45 Red-winged Blackbirds that invaded the feeders. Up on the feeders and many on the ground, these birds were stealthy and sneaky behind my back :)
Thanks to Rob Bate for donating more seed for me a 60 lb bag. That along with my 80 lbs should be able to make it to the final days of winter.
Have a good weekend. The Painted Bunting and Varied Thrush still remain on their long held wintering spots. Check the previous posts for locations.

- Comments: "This neat little guy has been sighted frequently since January in the same location I saw it today, at the nethermead in prospect park. The orange streak across its head immediately made it stand out to me among the mob of blue jays and white throated sparrows. Unfortunately, I only got to watch it for about 15 seconds before I lost it in the crowd and it flew off back into the woods. Not really surprised at how well it's been doing out here since the weather has felt eerily like the pacific northwest lately."

wet hoodies
On this raw crappy day especially after lunch by pelting raindrops, only the lake was worth checking out.
A scan and a sweep of Prospect Lake revealed nothing much except for a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS.The mixed pair looked miserable I think as the drake was still and not in the mood to court the hen. Well, with the sour mood of the rain, I cant blame him.

Very early spring in Greenwood Cemetery
A warm spot opened in Greeenwood Cemetery today with several species obviously early -- I say very early--spring migrants. ( I'm Not ready for winter to move on).
First to say is definitely a spring bird is an American Woodcock. It was reported by Rob Bate along with two Eastern Phones. Of the latter one may be the overwintering Phoebe. The former the woodcock was found up from Cypress Ave near Vine Ave.
More spring signs in midwinter in the form of Chipping Sparrows and Palm Warbler also were observed. Daisy Paul reported a flock with the Chippies and a single Palm.

Very early or overwintering traveling Pine Warbler
Hard to tell which in regards but it's extremely early for a migrating bird. Pine warblers are know to overwinter particular ly with the warm winter we are having. Good bird for the park now. -kb

He holds the US record for a photo big day and is the co-author of The Warbler Guide book and app.

-- and the PAINTED BUNTING hun near pier 5. Generally the main pedestrian Thruway path behind pier 3 to 5 is its abode. Even pier three grass borders are prime spots. Find the grass,hope for PABU.

The Varied Thrush keeps chugging on
As long as warm weather sticks around, there is little reason for the Prospect Varies Thrush to leave.it's entertaining too many birders!
Today's sightings remains unchanged for the location: Binnen Creek on the south side of Nethermead 3 Arches Bridge. One report placed the thrush at the binnen pool far side. So generally in this area from the Osage orange tree to the bridge corner slope to the creek and it's tangle remain the gist of it.Even white throated sparrows are a help to which the thrush hangs out with.
A nice bird reported though uncommon in Prospect this winter was a Merlin.
Meanwhile another winter long rarity likes the warm temperatures:The Brooklyn bridge park Painted Bunting. Reports center on the back edge of pier 3 and the main path behind it before the pier entrance.
