Hi Peter,

We had a fun walk yesterday with the highlights being a Hooded Warbler on West Island and the Least Bittern in the Upper Pool, where it gave excellent views on a branch in the water near Dog Beach. Though Birdcast showed almost 250k birds passing through Kings County, I think most took advantage of the good winds and kept going; the park was rather quiet and not many birds were singing.

We had 56 species, and here is the list: https://ebird.org/checklist/S230900909.

Thanks to everyone who came out and the other leaders/veteran birders in the group (Angie, Megan, Sheila, Kathy, and Janet).

Ryan

Prospect yesterday

109 species recorded.

A star is born

It's quite unusual for me to write two personal reports in one day! ( Well it's my off day so there no work exhaustion 🥱🤗). But after seeing the Least Bittern, I had to at least write about my experience

So today I had a regular doctor's appointment in mid town Manhattan . I purposely selected 2 pm for my appointment so that I could squeeze it with anchoring birding walks: greenwood this morning and prospect in the afternoon . I figured getting the least bittern was feasible coming from 7th Ave train stop. Of course I stopped at Smileys pizza 🍕 and after seeing the bittern, I was all smiles . So today, ironically,a Michael got me my spark bird in the morning; this afternoon, a second Michael got me the hidden bittern of Upper Pool .

But before that chance meeting, I was looking for the bittern from the dog beach with a new birder Dena which for her would be a life bird . We eventually parted but I recalled she said she was on Discord .

Long story short ,I started walking up Falkill Falls path and saw long time acquaintance Michael who was pointing at branches at the water edge next to the gated boat ramp .It took me about 30 seconds to see what and where our new star the bittern. With such open views and cooperation, this least bittern for nearly a full week has delighted so many birders, for many a life bird . You are not going see better looks of this usually reclusive species . She's a looker,a glamorous star ⭐ born for our benefit.

And even better Dena got the Least Bittern on her return ( after I went back looking for her but missed) , thanks for my discord post and my good hearing .😄

How sweet it is . My spark boid in a golden light

One advice I say to birders: when bird forecasts say it'll be good you have to take it with a grain of salt . When the tough gets going, be glad sometimes to get your spark bird.

I like to err on the side of caution and not get overeager with rosy bird forecasts. Today was sort of hard for no cooperation from birds that were mostly hidden from view, in smaller numbers than anticipated, or tough seeing with the full leaf out and misses when told there's something . So was the case in Greenwood Cemetery where I went to on my day off away from the office. With help from Michael and Julian, frustration led to gladness as both friends help me see my spark bird ,a Scarlet Tanager!

The male Tanager shone brightly in the golden sunlight, perched on a sweet gum tree branch, sitting awhile and preening itself . So I had to say quoting the great Jackie Gleason " How Sweet it is!". This in my 50th anniversary is a complete cycle. How would it look if I missed the bird this year? 😄

Thanks to Michael and Julian as well as newfound friend Mark being part of today's great moment.

Compiled by Michele

It was a great outing despite the breezy weather, bookended by two iconic Green-Wood birds: the parrots at the entrance, with a bonus appearance by a pair of red tailed hawks who may be attempting to nest on top of them (we'll see how that goes); and the now-fully adult red-headed woodpecker.

We had about 30 participants at our largest, including visitors from out-of-state and out-of-the-country, and a newborn baby.  Several were birding the cemetery for the first time.

A double bittern day and kentucky charm

Birders for Sunday were treated to an unlikely double take with two different bittern species in the same general area in Prospect Park. With half marathon chaos today, Kentucky Warbler didn't run far from yesterday's first appearance.

This morning at Upper Pool ( sourced by Falkill Falls) , a surprising American Bittern was spotted on the isthmus between both pools. A report I read said the Least Bittern was near it as well! This is unreal as I never heard this happening here with both species together . Further reports placed the American moving over to the Lower Pool on the southern part; the Least traveled as well towards the Esdale Bridge- the entry into the Ravine where shockingly it was out in the open! See the link here for one example https://ebird.org/checklist/S230184791.

Meanwhile the other celebrity is the Kentucky Warbler. From its first recorded location in North Midwood Saturday ,the bird moved towards the zoo's northern boundary, in the compost mulch yard. From multiple reports I read, I gathered the calling bird was in lots of different spots, at one point nearest the zoo buildings on the east side. Wherever it was ,this Kentucky has safe refuge from the throngs of people drawn in for today's half Marathon. While there, it turned on its charm for mobs of birders.

In other news , greenwood cemetery hosted Cape May and Orange crowned warblers in the Crescent Water area .

Enjoy your week...

Thursday, April 24, 2025

It's great to see a mega rare bird stick around .

Juan Salas has been hot lately. The birder who found an Eastern Whippoorwill earlier this week has found Brooklyn birders another gem: Least Bittern!

Reported early this morning on the Upper Pool southeastern shore, seen by mob of birders, the slow moving bird stuck around for me to see it in late afternoon. For work even I'm in the park keeps me obligated till I check out at 4 pm ( I'm not able to do so on my lunch hours) .

I had to go to the bank on 7th avenue to get cash ( I'm an old dinosaur for that matter, cold cash for my wallet) because I needed to give a birthday cash gift tonight for my great niece turning 8. I confessed that I was tempted to take the train home from there but figured why pay car fare if I could've avoid the ATM fee out of network. So I decided to walk home. It's a good thing I did that because the Bittern I found out later from a passing birder on 9th Street , was still around: it stuck it out

So I took my time. Upon approach to Falkill Falls, I spotted several birders looking down before Falkill
Falls bridge. I asked Danielle K if she had the bird. yup. She tried her best to tell me where." In front of the flat rock perched in the tree tangles, partially  hidden". It took me about ten minutes but finally I see an orangey object. Got it!

For the next 30 minutes, we watched and relocated it several times with birders helping each other..till eventually the bittern is really cooperative, sitting on the western  shoreline, perched on broken branches in the waterfall outlet . Such a moment and happy this bird stuck around for me to see it 🤗

Hi Peter,
It was a very beautiful day, with another good crowd of about 50 people, similar to last week. But oddly a bit less birdy. We did end up with 59 species including 9 species of warblers. But there were lots of quiet places.
We thought the bird of the day was going to be a stick insect that the park rangers had in a cage to show kids... but then we got the discord notice of the Least Bittern and had very good, long looks at it hunting in the upper pool.

Here's the list.

Best regards,
Tom

Today's Prospect bird is Prothonotary

The top bird Wednesday was a Prothonotary Warbler making raves in the Lull water.

Reported early in the morning near Lull water Bridge, the prospect sightings shifted thru the Lull water towards Terrace Bridge . This golden bird is hard to miss but can be elusive as it works the shoreline tangles.

We're happy to announce the 2025 Brooklyn Bird Club Birdathon, to be held in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) on Saturday, May 10.  https://www.worldmigratorybirdday.org/

The annual Birdathon asks birders to form teams of up to 6 members and count bird species in Brooklyn in support of a cause that helps the birds we love. Everyone is welcome ─ hardcore birders, backyard feeder watchers, and beginners! Like a walkathon, participants collect pledges and donations from friends and family for finding and counting bird species on the day of the Birdathon. Instead of getting a pledge per mile walked, Birdathon participants ask for a pledge for each bird species seen by the team.

This year's designated beneficiary is the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI). For more information, and to donate: https://givebutter.com/brooklyn-bird-club-2025-spring-birdathon

Please register your team by sending team members, your day's goal, and a team name to Bobbi Manian birdathon@brooklynbirdclub.org by Tuesday, May 6.

If you'd like to be connected to a team, contact Bobbi Manian (see above) who will try to connect people with similar levels of commitment.

Spectacular finds in Greenwood Cemetery

Greenwood was spectacular today. Thanks to a mega find plus two other stupendous discoveries, birders had a memorable day.

Here is a summary as I won't go into much detail.

The best and first for Greenwood was a SWAINSONS WARBLER found by Michael S in the Dellwater while he was observing the Hooded Warbler. Seeing another ground bird flipping leaves led to the astounding overshoot find . It makes me wonder if there were more in past years undetected because fewer birders were around pre COVID . The SWAINSONS was observed walking along the stone wall of the mostly dried up pond at the north section.

Then when it rains it pours. On Oakwood Ave just west of Central Ave, an Eastern Whippoorwill was found sleeping on a Pine branch. I'm not sure who discovered it but the birder must have Superman eyes. Just a day after the one in Prospect, another bird found on consecutive days is pure magic.

The third time is a charm with the discovery of a Sora Rail resting under a Cherry tree, location unrevealed to protect the bird from mobs of birders that descended on the cemetery.

For other species, a few notable ones: flyover Black Vultures in a kettle of 5 over Sylvan pond; Solitary Sandpiper in the Dellwater; and the continuing Red Headed woodpecker at Hemlock and Battle Avenues.

Prospect will have its day. But for now today, a pair of Blue winged Teals are hanging out in Upper Pool where a Solitary Sandpiper was spotted. the latter was also reported near the back gate of Lower Pool, and West shore Prospect Lake

An early Least Sandpiper in front of Falkill Falls and early Swainson thrush ( not the one we wished) on Lookout is the best the park can do. I saw Louisiana Waterthrush after work ,in the Ambergill.

One of those days I wished I had off.. 😄
