Fwd: Songbird Saver: Test New App to Help Prevent Birds from Colliding into Towers

Songbird Saver: Test New App to Help Prevent Birds from Colliding into Towers
An estimated seven million birds die each year in North America by colliding with broadcast and cell towers. These birds – primarily night-flying songbirds on migration, such as Yellow-billed Cuckoos – are either attracted to or disoriented by the lighting systems, especially when night skies are overcast or foggy.
Now, a website developer who loves birds has created a new app to make it easy to help implement a solution. With Stan Weigman's Songbird Saver, you can enter your zip code to find tall towers near you, then send a request to operators asking them to turn off steady-burning red lights. This simple change is known to reduce bird mortality by about 70 percent.
The SongbirdSaver app is now in testing before a larger rollout planned for later this year. Please give it a try, provide your feedback, and be part of a simple change that will save birds in your community!
(Note: Some of the data driving the app – including tower owner e-mail addresses – may be out of date. If you receive an email bounce-back from a tower operator, please print and mail your letter. Please provide your feedback on Songbird Saver to ABC's Steve Holmer.)
A key factor in bird mortality at towers is height, with towers 350 feet or more above ground level posing the greatest threat. Elimination of non-flashing red lights on these towers also provides a substantial benefit to tower operators, who reduce electricity consumption.
Hundreds of tall towers across the U.S. have already updated their lighting to reduce bird collisions and reduce operating costs. The change was urged by the Federal Communications Commission, which launched a policy encouraging tower operators to adopt bird-friendly and energy-saving lighting configurations.

"We are seeing great progress and thank the operators of the 700+ towers that have updated their lighting to help reduce mortality of birds," said Christine Sheppard of ABC's Bird Collisions Program. "But there are still tens of thousands of tall towers across the U.S. with outdated lights. We are asking all tower operators to make this cost- and life-saving switch to help save migratory birds."

Also, a female red-winged blackbird, a ruby-crowned kinglet in the water garden, and a belted kingfisher calling from somewhere.

Turkeys in the sky

Nothing worth mentioning today as no reports were received from afield by birders except for one note from Kathy Toomey.

Kathy reported a kettle of 12 TURKEY VULTURES over Greenwood Cemetery in the early afternoon. It seems approproiate for these scavenger birds to be over a cemetery just before Halloween.

After sparrows, blackbirds

Post sparrow migration comes the Blackbirds. And late October peaks with blackbirds. On my casual Sunday Prospect walk, that blackbird presence was evident.

In the phragmites marsh between West island and the rustic shelter, COMMON GRACKLE S are busy feeding. The frenzy of about 60 birds moving through the stalks made it impossible to discern a different species. About an hour later I looked up from the Maryland Monument and watched a brief stream of flying grackles flying northeast over the Terrace bridge. I do know the estimated 225 birds didn't stop down for the Breeze hill Smogasbord.

On Prospect Lake, the Ruddy duck flock is increasing,at least 125 birds. Northern shovelers seem around the usual from the past week ,around 15 birds.

Sparrow day for vespers

An excellent infusion of Sparrows this morning that was highlighted by the VESPER SPARROW. A gorgeous sunny day that warmed up measurably but across the general area saw a very good movement of sparrows in certain parks.

Sean Sime-- at Brooklyn Botanic garden grassland section --witnessed hundreds of sparrows in that small area.

The same for a dense fallout according to Heather Wolf happened at Brooklyn bridge park pier one lawn, barely an acre plot. Remarkable in that small areas held so many sparrows bursting at the seams.

A fallout of rare VESPER SPARROWS today. Bobbi Manian reported one at Bush Terminal park; Heather Wolf saw one at pier six in the pier end lawn; I found one standing on the moat wall of Fort Jay's south wall. The latter was re-found 538 pm by Ben Cacace. In other parts of Brooklyn, two more Vespers are recorded.

On my leisured trek on Governor's, I also found AMERICAN PIPIT walking on the reseeded portion of the Parade ground. Slow birding on Governor's thanks to the late morning first ferry,I observed a Red tailed Hawk on a radio tower.

Of interest is EASTERN BLUEBIRD. This sighting occurred in Greenwood cemetery at Forest avenue as relayed by Ed Crowne.

To finish off my report, Sean had good Prospect birds:a WHITE CROWNED SPARROW at Butterfly meadow; ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER at the Sparrowbowl.

Dear Peter Dorosh,

Today marks the official 150th anniversary of Prospect Park! On October 19,1867, Brooklyn's Backyard opened to the community for the first time with a special celebration, and tonight, the Empire State Building will light up green in recognition of this milestone. As we celebrate Prospect Park's rich history, we're asking you to shape its future by joining us at a community workshop aimed at reimagining the Prospect Park Rose Garden.

Throughout the summer, Prospect Park Alliance partnered with Hester Street to engage community members across Brooklyn in reimagining Prospect Park's Rose Garden—a little known area in the northeast corner of the Park. We reached almost 2,000 people and gathered over 2,340 ideas through engagement events in and around the Park, and in various Brooklyn neighborhoods. Now we want to share all the great feedback and ideas we received to narrow down the options.

Join us at an upcoming event to learn more about the engagement and design process, hear a report back of all the input we have collected, and narrow down options for the future of the Rose Garden.

We are offering several opportunities to hear your feedback. Please drop by on the day that works best for you, during any of the times listed below.

Each event will cover the same material and be free and open to the public. Refreshments, and Spanish and Haitian Creole translation will be provided. Your input will directly impact the redesign and programming of the future Rose Garden. Bring your family and friends and make the Rose Garden a place that reflects your community! Reimagine Prospect Park is made possible through the generous support of The Altman Foundation.
