For those wondering where the slides came from, it was this event:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/inspiring-change-ridgewood-reservoir-a-panel-discussion-tickets-155821822265

You'll note the sentence that says the basins "are among the greatest unused inaccessible natural-protected spaces in the city."

And here I thought this whole time that it was used and accessed by nature, which was the whole point of stopping development. This sounds very Robert Moses-esque. Next they'll be calling it "underutilized."

I, for one, did not work to save the reservoir so that nature could be replaced by a performance space and playground.

Ridgewood Reservoir under "attack" again

After years of fighting to preserve the natural state of the reservoir from development and interior ballfields ,finally getting protected status, some bozos talking about playgrounds inside... What do they don't understand ?

From Newtown historical Society Christina Wilkinson:

Anyone on board with removing nature in basin 3 and replacing it with a children's slide and performance space? We certainly did not join the cause to save the reservoir only to end up with this nonsense. For those wondering where the slides came from, it was this event:

The New York State Atlas team is planning an exciting new event for this
June: the first-ever Big Atlas Weekend
<https://ebird.org/atlasny/news/big-atlas-weekend-june-25-27>! This event
will be a fun way for birders across the state to focus on breeding birds,
build birding skills, and come together as a birding community. There will
also be a chance to win prizes in different Atlas categories.

If you're missing the big day competitions or you just love to bird with a
purpose, this is the event for you!

You don't have to be an expert to participate. We have designed challenges
and prizes (free courses of your choosing from Cornell's Bird Academy) for
birders of all skill levels designed to focus your atlasing where we need
it most.

Plus, there will be a friendly competition between four states that are
currently conducting atlases: Maine, Maryland-DC, New York, and North
Carolina.

Mark your calendar and plan to go atlasing between June 25 and June 27 so
New York can claim bragging rights for the inaugural Big Atlas Weekend!

Happy atlasing!
Julie

PP Acadia turf

The ACADIAN FLYCATCHER continues to stake out the area along the Ambergill creek and pool in the Ravine based on multiple reports.

Singing its " pizza" song it's heard more often than seen but does cooperate for looks with low perches. This is a good bird observation for the park as the species is expanding its southern range northward the last decade ..

The Ambergill goes under the Esdale Bridge as indicated on official park maps. The Ravine is on the south bridge side. Along this section towards the waterfall Rock arch bridge is Acadian domain.

This Ruby-throated Hummingbird makes nest-building look so easy. But I encourage you all to read about it in Sibley's "Sibley Guide to Bird Life & Behavior". It isn't so easy - especially after two days of downpours like we've just had. JBWR 05.31.2021. 💕 https://t.co/t6tYWbz3h2
