A Cool looking sparrow
One of the handsomest sparrows around is the American Tree sparrow. With its yellow mani of and overall gray buffy ovetones, and red cap, its a rare opportunity to see one here locally.
Reported yesterday on Discord, one tree sparrow was reported at the Prospect park feeders.

Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) (1)
- Reported Jan 29, 2025 17:03 by Doug Gochfeld
- Brooklyn Bridge Park, Kings, New York
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=40.6996104,-73.9973745&ll=40.6996104,-73.9973745
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S211210133
- Comments: "*very rare. Perhaps the first park record. Juvenile at the marina. Smallish GLGU, a bit smaller than the GBBGs, but towering over the surrounding RBGUs when it was perched on the docks. Milky/cappucino aspect with pale wingtips, smallish eye, and extensively pink-based bill with black tip (pink/black border not exactly vertical, but pretty close). First seen at 17:30, sitting on the water, where it looked mostly like a Glaucous Gull, except that it looked a bit rounder-headed, and seemed comparable in size to the RBGUs it was floating near, leading to initial confusion on the ID. Once it perched on the end of one of the long docks, in the company of the three common species of winter gull that occur here, that confusion vanished, as it was clearly a Glaucous. Digiscoped

Quick visit GWC dellwater
During a drive thru with family Saturday afternoon in greenwood Cemetery, I decided to make A quick stop at the dellwater to see some special birds. I got two of them.
Even if common in due season, the sight of two out of season birds in wintertime is a thing. First was two chipping sparrows at the second feeder, enjoying seed with a bunch of cardinals and some gold finches with nut hatch, chickadee and juncos. I figured the oriole was by the behives and I guessed right.
Seeing another birder already there, I took immediate looks at the beehives and there's a single Baltimore Oriole- likely a female on the ground, as it scour the ground. I said to myself " ok,cool winter bird and im happy". It was my first attempt of these long staying birds.

A record breaker and quality sunday
The bird of the day is obviously Common Merganser. According to a source ,this species set the high count historically for prospect park besting the previous count of nine.
This morning Sameer spotted 15 Common mergansers in open water of a mostly frozen lake. Photos he took verified the number . When I finally got around after morning services and errands, I saw three-two hens and a Drake and that's enough for me adoring this beautiful duck. Nearby at Three Sisters islands a pair of wood ducks and a hen Hooded Merganser added some beauty as well.
Other scarce reports centered on the feeders and overhead. The Pine warbler continues to visit the feeders ,joined by a female purple finch. Another birder watched a flyover juvenile Bald Eagle.
If you're interested in Greenwood Cemetery birds, go to the Dellwater feeders . There you're find the continuing two Baltimore Orioles and Chipping Sparrow. Meanwhile the now more redder Redheaded Woodpeckers sticks to its abode at Hemlock Ave west of Battle Avenue in the 3 or 4th tree on the south edge of the road. That's its cavity roost.
Stay warm! And enjoy the snow ! 🎿❄️☃️

A paler bird than the one seen by many around Brooklyn Army Terminal earlier this month: If Richard described the color of the other individual as "cafe con leche," this one was just … leche. First seen perched on the railing on our way back to the car and last seen through the scope, flying west somewhere over the northern end of Staten Island, where we finally lost it. Photos.

I wasn't aware. We walked A total of 6 1/4 miles, in my typical boiding boot camp spirit . calm seas,no wind makes winter birding enjoyable.

Windy Sunday local gems
Sunday with sunny weather still windy kept some birders local. Continuity is the word with a number of birds that seem comfortable here.
In Greenwood Cemetery, a few hilights of continuing species. Long staying Red headed Woodpecker likes it's comfort zone at the Hemlock Ave trees west of Battle Ave. Both Baltimore Oriole and Chipping Sparrow stuck close to the feeders and suet at Dellwater.
Speaking of feeders, the Pine warbler continues there at Prospect. A second Pine Warbler was reported in a Pine conifer near the Well Dr and west lake drive junction.
Last good bird to report ? A Cackling Goose on the Lake by the Peninsula, within the Canada Geese flock.
Me? I'm too tired today after yesterday's BBC windstorm trip to pursue these birds.

New years day in the nabe
A mixed bag of sightings on this first day of the year, but a good start mentally to enjoy life; A good way to love life all over again.
In lieu of reports online here's the summary of the best observations.
In Greenwood Cemetery starting in the Dellwater area, both Chipping Sparrow and Baltimore Oriole showed up. They may be common in migration and breeding season ,but in winter they're worthy chasing. The Chipping was seen at the feeder in Dell whereas both Orioles hung out in brush there.
In Prospect Park, feeder birds is the prize. Pine Warbler and 2 Purple Finches are notables.
Sticking to Prospect ,an Orange crowned Warbler was spotted sipping slippery elm sap Northwest of Lullwater ( boathouse) Bridge..
Lastly, for a little mentioned place, the Cemetery of the Evergreens host a Red headed Woodpecker, our second bird along with the one in Greenwood Cemetery that has been recently reported .
Happy New Year! 🎉

My golden year in 2025

Its hard to fanthom that fifty years birding have finally arrived. From my first spring in 1975 at age 14, A spectacular male Scarlet Tanager became my spark bird in the shadow of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in the Wallabout section of Brooklyn.
I remembered that Scarlet Tanager vividly. My mother - still with us- always fetched me to go to the backyard window to look at the bright bird. Most times it was a noisy Blue Jay. But on this particular mid May day, my eyes were mesmerized by the sight of the tanager on the ground. It was no doubt a divine gift a year after my fathers passing in 1974.
Through a lifetime of 50 years birding, I've met many great people and share and heard great stories, experienced tremendous moments ,primarily through the Brooklyn Bird Club that soon became my godsend, eventually becoming its president in the late 1990s,honored in leading the 2009 centennial celebration.
Time flew fast and we only have this moment. So it is with deep gratitude to all who met me and stopped for a conversation and talk about birds. I'll be grateful at my pace to appreciate all the wonderful moments, done multiple bird counts and countless field trips ,remembering past friends as well as current and new ones. But most of all I'll remember my very special bird my Scarlet Tanager setting me on my life's path.
