If you missed this mornings planet parade, read on

Only on Friday, June 24? How about over the weekend?

You’ll be able to see the alignment of the planets until the end of June. However, the Moon will be positioned between Mars and Venus Friday through Sunday morning. On Sunday, the Moon will be right next to Venus making for a beautiful celestial tableau at about 45 minutes before sunrise

hoping for clear skies!

Celestial beauty of nature

Celestial beauty of nature: the sky cleared this morning with only eastern horizontal clouds that precluded horizon hugging Mercury which I knew was gonna be a tough one to see. But I didn't have to drive. All four planets Venus, mars,Jupiter and Saturn ;and the beautiful crescent moon could be seen from my stoop or the street . All were observes at 420 am.

Getting a ittle hopeful, I went to prospect lakes western shore to get mercury, but as mentioned before the low clouds prevented the 5 planet bonus even as I waited till 445. Uranus was next to the moon but its too dim to see here. Nevertheless a spectacular display of planets.

Walking along the park drive for home, two raccoons lumbered across the drive while bats flew overhead. It was indeed a good morning. Ill try again I think Wednesday forecasted clear sky. The 5 planets will display another week  I think.

Brooklyn Bird Club Wednesday volunteers

The last spring BBC session ended weeding mugwort on Lookout Hills summit meadow,an important necessity to allow native plantings to take root in a restorative effort by the PPA Landscape office.

Many thanks to the BBC corps. They will resume in the Fall. If interested helping out, send a note to the Brooklyn Bird Club website contact link.

Morning planets from my block

This morning at 423 I awoke " sleepless in Brooklyn"and decided to look for the planets. I got to see three of the five.

Mars and Jupiter was no problem ,practically next to each other above me and over the big sugar maple. Saturn was a " fuhgettabouiit" lost in the neon haze of the bright street light below it. I tried shielding the light with my hand but to no avail. And Venus? She was way down the street! Venus was peeking just over the eastern horizon which means faint Mercury below it was an impossibility to see unless I go to the beach. (  a crazy thought at that hour)

Well 3 out of 5 ain't bad.. 🌎🕜🌠

Ps all 5 planets appear in correct order as in our solar system in our sky.

Jamaica Bay horseshoe crab poaching American Legion ballfields shoreline

https://www.facebook.com/100002128627891/posts/5318889408191961/?sfnsn=mo

If you see poaching  do call US Park Police

US Parks Police Number is 718-338-3988

From Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers

Poaching remains a major concern in Jamaica Bay. Last night the National Parks Service issued numerous citiations at the All American Ball fields to poachers who were noted taking large volumes of horseshoe crabs. The harvesting of Horseshoe Crabs in Jamaica Bay is illegal  These animals clean the waters of the bay and their numbers have been falling in recent years which is a big concern . They are critical to the food chain as their eggs are a major source of food for the birds who migrate through here on their way north. We will continue to work with the DEC and the parks police to identify illegal poaching in Jamaica Bay

Hi,

A friend of mine, Peter Malinowski, head of the Billion Oyster Project, informed me that a pair of osprey are building a raggedy nest on a 50' light tower at the end of the gravel pit pier at the Brooklyn Navy Yard that extends into Wallabout Bay.  He said he first noticed it this year.  He thinks it is difficult to see from land outside the Navy Yard .

A birthday today 🎂🎉

Happy 88th Birthday to a Brooklyn birding legend Ron Bourque .

Ron was my first club trip leader back in the late 1970s  ( to High Tor state park) and a famed conservationist with Floyd Bennett field. He was a reknown Brooklyn bird club member serving with his wife then Jean as the Clapper Rail newsletter editor.

You can find him as a Marine Park garden volunteer occasionally.

I wished him well..

Meadow mourning

Mourning warbler continues its presence in Prospects Butterfly Meadow.

This morning around 9 am, a birder heard the singing Mourning Warbler within the dense foliage. Its likely the same bird hanging around for a week there.
