Mourning at the hill

Ed Crowne heard a Mourning Warbler at the base of north Lookout Hill this morning.

At the edge of the Nethermead, a calling Mourning used the wood piles as a cover with some sneaky glimpses on Lookout slope. But that's what you expect of this bird..

The bird eventually moved along the east slope towards Maryland monument.

Suspense at 3 sisters islands

There was suspense and initial excitement over a possible MacGillivrays Warbler at South shore Prospect Lake. When the dust settled down, it now appears more likely a female Mourning warbler is the culprit.. At least there was a lurking Least Bittern across the lake.

A twitter tweet from a photographer birder sent the flash mob to south shore with hopes of seeing Kings first MacGillivrays. After the first spot at the willow swamp across from 3 Sisters western island, the bird flew across to Three Sisters as the mob waited patiently for a reappearance. Apparently more photos were obtained for better identification. The early consensus points to a female Mourning warbler which has broken eye arcs but not as bold.I'll wait and see for more details.

Obviously there are disappointed birders, but at least the Least Bittern stuck around presumably the same one from early May. It was heard calling from within the phragmites at Peninsula "thumb".

And Baybreasted still comes through; I believed it was reported also on South shore.

The West comes to Prospect

In a fascinating twist,a third western bird vagrant has visited the prospect neighborhood within a month. Following up Prospects Black throated Gray warbler and recently Greenwood Cemetery's Townsends Warbler, we now have a Western Tanager.

Forest Wickman has been on a hot streak ,finding the western tanager this morning just north of the Maryland Monument. This afternoon the bird was found again, with a photo of an adult male bird, all yellow with reddish head. Eleanor Ray took the photo just before 4 pm. I presumed It was near the Tulip tree first found on the northern slope of the Lullwater.

Just a spectacular trend with these western strays. One western bird gets us excited but three unsual spring records is just ridiculous!

kite flies high and fast

For the second consecutive day, a kite flies over the cemetery. That along with several other rarities made Sunday a fulfilling day in two locales.

This morning the Mississippi Kite reappeared. And it was spotted a few times, last over the Crescent Water at Greenwood cemetery. It's an exciting moment and possibly sticking around as they have done in the past,I recalled in  a Staten Island cemetery.

The Townsend's warbler was not found today but could still be around somewhere else in the big cemetery. For birders on the search, they did see Bald Eagle and Alder Flycatcher. And a single Purple Martin flew over the Crescent Water. The airspace there is cooking!

In Prospect two highlights to report.A Summer Tanager turned up in the Vale of Cashmere ; and near the Lullwater Bridge towards the cove or north side, a Prothonotary Warbler surfaces , upon branches I presumed, over the water surface.

A Yellow bellied Flycatcher is a strong possibility as reported today, residing on the slope between the Vale Cashmere and Rose garden

Check the Prospect checklist for other finds.

Greenwood cemetery comes thru spectacular ly again

The mega rarity was literally topped by another spectacular rarity today in Greenwood Cemetery.

The continuing Townsend's Warbler stuck to its loyal roots at Cypress Ave. Reported on that road by Zephyr Path, all eyes looking up, when some birders saw a flyover Mississippi Kite! Photos confirmed the Kite as it flew in a southeasterly direction. A great moment regarding two high quality rairites in one spot.

Meanwhile over in neighboring Prospect, two standouts. Another Mourning Warbler was reported at Butterfly Meadow. Another Mourning called in NorthLullwater. Then at the Dongan Oak eagle monument, a confirmed Bicknells Thrush skulked on the north side of the eagle. The call gave away its true identity.

For more quality, add Alder Flycatchers to the days list. Two birds sang away on Lookout Hill and in the Midwood.

Friday, May 20, 2022

Olive sided fc and that other "bird"

Overshadowed by today's mega bird Townsend's Warbler in Greenwood cemetery, an Olive Sided flycatcher put in an appearance in Prospect.

Along the East Drive within the south Midwood, the boreal flycatcher perches in a dead tree per Ryan M.-- as expected of the species.

Getting back to the Townsend's, the bird was heard by a visiting Californian birder named Cedric Duhalde. Because it was high up in the tree canopy, the singing or call by Townsend's would've been taken by a similar Black-throated Green.

The bird was first heard by Cedric at Cypress and Grape Avenues, the former always a magical warbler road due to the numerous oaks lined along there.

Good luck if it's there tomorrow.

Hi Peter,
We had a brave and hardy group today... with rain and not a lot of birds at first, but after some clearing it turned out to be fairly birdy. We ended up with 83 species and 18 species of warblers.
Highlights: several Bay-breasted Warblers, Blue-winged and Canadas that showed well, many female Blackpolls, a juvenal Broad-winged Hawk, a cooperative Gray-cheeked Thrush along with all of its relatives except Bicknell's, and more.
The Mourning was, unfortunately, just a call and the Summer Tanager was a singing bird that then called a few times and disappeared before we could find it. In fact, many birds disappeared suddenly today, including the Marsh Wren, which showed for a few of us only.

Even with the rain it was a lot of fun with a great group.
Here's the list.

Best regards,
Tom

Hello,
I saw this posted near the entrance to PP and Garfield and thought our bird watching community might have come across the bird in their travels.
I don't know if you normally post things like this but I thought it was worth a try

Thanks!

Its MOWA time in prospect

Today's hilight regards Mourning Warbler. This reclusive warbler is quite a prize ..if you can see it.

Whether it's one bird or two,two locations held sway for prospects Mourning warbler. The first sighting is the east slope of the Vale of Cashmere, where dense native growth resides. Then a few hours later, the area above the Tunnel Arch stairs revealed the " second" bird, described as skulking as its nature.

Brooklyn Bridge park has its own bird.. Mike Yuan reported one at long pond on pier one.

Hi Peter,

we had a great walk yesterday!   8 hours and 17 species of warblers.  Janet and Alan found a termite hatchout looking down from the Terrace Bridge and had a wonderful time looking DOWN at warblers.  Thanks to Radka for letting us know how birdy 3-sisters was we spent several hours going up that side of the lake.  we had a fairly cooperative wormeating at the top of Maryland steps and almost eye-level looks at a pair of Bay-breasteds along the Lullwater

fell asleep super early and forgot to send list, so remedying htat now

b.

Monday gems

Sporadic sightings in Prospect led to some good birds. From what I heard without looking at the checklist, here's a few.

A top bird now that mid may peaks for Empidonaxes was an Acadian fly catcher. First reported near Falkill Falls, it moved down slope the path towards Center drive. Here it was heard calling within the deep recesses of the woods.

In the Vale of Cashmere, a Yellow billed cuckoo showed up. But I think the more interesting bird in the Vale should be an Eastern Bluebird. A late appearance into deeper spring raises the possibility of a breeding bird?

Bay breasted Warblers are handsome birds ( and I love to find one) . Two reports came out with this species- one at Terrace Bridge and the other at Hammerhead southwest shore.

Todays quick hilights

The Prothonotary warbler- one of them- was refound at Lullwater between the cove and Terrace Bridge. Working its way thru, it traveled to the Peninsula north shore, about 200 feet so9uth of the pink concrete beach.

Over at Greenwood Cemetery, a lone Summer Tanager hit the mark at Oak leaf and Vista Avenues.

Birdathon Prospect Saturday

This is a brief summary of Prospect highlights yesterday with multiple teams reporting .

As mentioned in a previous post, it appears the bird of the day and Co-sharing the year are 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS in a flyover. If the first ( after I check Ebird records monday) then this species joins another first two weeks ago the Black throated Gray Warbler. We're on a roll here!

On the topic with warblers, two darn good birds ( maybe three I say), Kentucky and Prothonotary warblers were found, the latter , two seen.Aforementioned earler, the Kentucky descended on Butterfly meadow's Western slope perimeter whereas the two Prothonataries were found at Lower pool and Lullwater cove respectively. A Hooded warbler adds more quality. Accenting the low numbers this years birdathon,"only" twenty warbler species makes the grade.

A Marsh wren continues at Lily Pool, now for a week stay there. At the same spot, Solitary Sandpaper is also a check off.

Some water birds to report for their quality. Forsters tern ,Yellow Crowned night Heron ,Gadwall and Wood Duck are some good finds.

Adding to these sightings, in and above the park, a Lincoln Sparrow and Monk Parakeets likely from Greenwood joined a flyover Bald Eagle.

Overall this year was a !ow count Birdathon. The top team recorded 111 species, with cumulative all teams finding 133 species. Prospects top. Number was 82 species earned by a young Birders team.

If you are interested in donating, please go to the Brooklyn bird club Facebook page. Or email them if not a Facebook subscriber. Its for conservation ,creating new habitat at Greenwood cemetery Valley Water.

Reported a slow day in that birders struggles finding birds, nevertheless the collective effort was 114 species in Prospect birdathon day.

The highest park team account achieved by precocious young teenagers was 82 species ( check the photo on BBC Facebook)

Highlights was a Kentucky warbler on the upper west slope of Lookout Hill bordering Butterfly meadow; second good bird turns out to be a Prothonotary Warbler in the Lower and Upper Pools.

If and able to gather more info,I'll summarize. It was a worn out day for me Saturday that I dozed off early Saturday evening.

Till then.
