- Comments: "**rarely encountered (though presumably regular, very low-density) migrant through NYC - but now’s the time. Killer find by Michael Silber; my first time seeing this species on the ground and only my third time actually putting eyes on one. Small Antostromus nightjar, comparable in size to American robin (contra much larger chuck-will’s-widow, which is comparable in size to a rock pigeon); smallish head in silhouette and grizzled, grayish plumage with lots of contrast but lacking strong rufous tones. Still and closed-eyed the whole time, save for briefly rocking back-and-forth during a big gust of wind. It’s fun to compare cryptically-colored forest floor dwellers with various inanimate objects such as piles of leaves, snarled wood, etc but the tonality and patterning of this bird reminded me rather strongly of the mottled grayish paper made by bald-faced hornets, often found strewn about the forest floor after the first hard frost of winter kills the hornets and their nests are shredded by birds and mammals predating the larvae. Anyway, ABA recommendations on reporting sensitive nocturnal species apply to roosting nightjars as well as roosting owls; thus, report was withheld from ebird until the bird had moved on. At some locales, nocturnal birds can be freely shared and publicized due to a difference in birding ethics and culture, but in NYC they are at higher risk of harassment by photographers. If you wish things were different, consider not supporting people like Brooklyn/Manhattan Bird Alert and others who have been involved in the publicizing and harassment of sensitive nocturnal birds in the past. - Comments: "Delayed report in case of any concern for a near threatened species. Unclear what the reporting standard is for nightjars. Seen flying on the northern side of lookout hill where Juan Salas’ reported it flying last in the morning. Large eye shone through brief red light encounters. Long wings with medium sized tail and whiskers observed in light. Making “guac” noises before flying into the Quaker cemetery where it started singing classic “whip o Will” call for approximately 20 seconds. After that made a few more “guac” calls before seemingly retiring for the night. Seen/heads with Julian."

Seems more than okay given others have reported exact locations of the bird roosting on 4/22 and the bird we saw was not as chase-able. Unclear what the reporting standard is for nightjars. - Comments: "Uncommon, and also under detected. Small nightjar with smaller head (proportionally) than CWWI. Amazing find by Michael S. - very well camouflaged, but found without flushing, and stayed in the same spot all day. First one I’ve ever seen on the ground."
