Spectacular finds in Greenwood Cemetery

Greenwood was spectacular today. Thanks to a mega find plus two other stupendous discoveries, birders had a memorable day.

Here is a summary as I won't go into much detail.

The best and first for Greenwood was a SWAINSONS WARBLER found by Michael S in the Dellwater while he was observing the Hooded Warbler. Seeing another ground bird flipping leaves led to the astounding overshoot find . It makes me wonder if there were more in past years undetected because fewer birders were around pre COVID . The SWAINSONS was observed walking along the stone wall of the mostly dried up pond at the north section.

Then when it rains it pours. On Oakwood Ave just west of Central Ave, an Eastern Whippoorwill was found sleeping on a Pine branch. I'm not sure who discovered it but the birder must have Superman eyes. Just a day after the one in Prospect, another bird found on consecutive days is pure magic.

The third time is a charm with the discovery of a Sora Rail resting under a Cherry tree, location unrevealed to protect the bird from mobs of birders that descended on the cemetery.

For other species, a few notable ones: flyover Black Vultures in a kettle of 5 over Sylvan pond; Solitary Sandpiper in the Dellwater; and the continuing Red Headed woodpecker at Hemlock and Battle Avenues.

Prospect will have its day. But for now today, a pair of Blue winged Teals are hanging out in Upper Pool where a Solitary Sandpiper was spotted. the latter was also reported near the back gate of Lower Pool, and West shore Prospect Lake

An early Least Sandpiper in front of Falkill Falls and early Swainson thrush ( not the one we wished) on Lookout is the best the park can do. I saw Louisiana Waterthrush after work ,in the Ambergill.

One of those days I wished I had off.. 😄
