A remarkable little grassland spot

Given its little size perhaps an acre large ,the Brooklyn botanic garden grasslands section is a remarkable location. For a grassland not in Prospect park, it's a magnetic spot for rare fall birds.

Joshua started things with his productive morning report. The continuing DICKCISSEL joined now by a BOBOLINK gives motivation to come see for ourselves. Adding WHITE CROWNED SPARROWS and quality number of INDIGO BUNTINGS makes any visit enticing.

On my mid-afternoon visit,I saw all of Joshua's bird except for the still elusive Dickcissel. The BOBOLINK really was a treat! First found feeding on aster buds adjacent to the upper dirt trail,I experienced a long look; even better,it came down on the trail for a spectacular longer look.

The dirt trail closest to berm pines by the way hosted sparrows.I saw the juvenile WHITE CROWNED with several CHIPPING.Also Song joined in : I didn't see Field seen by Joshua.

Dennis and Kristin reported a decent number of INDIGO BUNTINGS spread out.

In retrospect, the BBG created a terrific habitat that's fast becoming the go-to spot of early fall. Even into winter with all those dried flower buds, hopefully we get more great stuff worth checking time after time.

Peter,

Slower day today with 55 species and 11 warblers but a good group. We had time to really work on age and sex of birds, warblers, sparrows and raptors in particular. I really tried to make the group work for the species ids and they didn't disappoint with Tim and Patty getting some very challenging fall warblers. We were also lucky enough to hear a raven which We really enjoyed.

Ok one more to go hoping for a big sparrow day next week.

BBG Grasslands

An unseasonably warm muggy day flat lined the birding today. There wasn't much to report except for what was seen at the Brooklyn botanic garden grasslands of the Native flora.

Hoping to see the Dickcissel of recent days,I struck out. Looking at every darn house sparrow is an irritation. As Joshua Malbin came along, the only exciting bird up to the moment was a CHIPPING SPARROW. Then Joshua pointed out a WHITE CROWNED SPARROW,later a pair in the pitch pine sapling at the pond edge while along with Maude Brown ,we three watched the nice sighting of juveniles. Earlier Joshua saw a warbler that wasn't a Common Yellowthroat. As has been my bad luck this fall when I left 25 minutes later,an ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER popped out for Joshua at 1140.

But no Dickcissel; it must sleep in very late.

KB Note: Dickcissel was reported by Ryan Candee later. See I said it was a late sleeper.

Also note in Owls head park,Gus reported CLAY COLORED SPARROW; late GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER in Prospect per Tim Graves.

Painted Lady at Bbg

A nice number at the azalea mall north section. Throw in a few skittish Monarchs as well. Good sign on the latter number

Hi Peter,

We had a large group today, which almost outnumbered the birds, although we eventually dug up about 57 species including 12 species of warblers.
It looks like the tail-end migrants are slowly trickling in. We had several yellow-rumps and pines. But so far no numbers of blackpolls...

Highlights might have been lots of Black-throated Blue Warblers, several Indigo Buntings, and a slightly demented mouse.

Here's the list

Best regards,
Tom

At the Native Garden section in the newer section of grasslands , Will Pollard reported Indigo Buntings and a DICKCISSEL in his late afternoon visit yesterday. Its a good chance the birds might still be there.

Hi Peter,

What a difference a week makes!  Today's walk was so birdy (in spots) that Ed Crowne had time to see us, say hello, go swimming and come back thru the park and remark that we had barely moved at all.

Highlights included a male and female Indigo Bunting by the dirt pile, the world's blandest Chestnut-sided (thankfully we had all studied The Warbler Guide's undertail views!), a drop in green-wing teal, and opportunities to study all three of the warbler species w/ yellow-rumps.

We went for over 7 hours, (Lenny had to phone home for an Alternate Side car move) and we all left the park begrudgingly due to fatigue and other commitments.

Rob will be covering for me next week (final walk).  It has been a great Fall with a dedicated group of regulars who were a joy to bird with.  See you all in the Spring!

Thanks to Lenny for doing the list again this week.

Best,
B.

Greenwood Cemetery water spots

Greenwood was the better option this morning at its renown Crescent and Dellwater ponds with rare birds reports.

Topping the list,a SUMMER TANAGER visited the  east slope above Crescent pond. This slope at the base saw CLAY COLORED SPARROW . Then along the water ,an ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER,described as a gorgeous specimen appeared. Tripper and Daisy Paul were the observers with Ryan Goldberg spotting the Clay colored first.

The SUMMER TANAGER hung around ,seen sipping water 1140 at Dellwater edges.

Over in Prospect, what's seen in greenwood also reported;both CLAY COLORED SPARROW and ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER as well, respectively Well drive and Peninsula tip. Though not as rare as the Summer Tanager,a nice find in RUSTY BLACKBIRD by Duck  Island reported by Kathy Toomey. See previous post below for details.

Peter,

A dozen birders had an active start to the day with nearly a dozen warbler species on duck island where we spent over an hour.

Other highlights were Lincoln sparrow which you found on butterfly meadow Wilson's warbler indigo bunting a pair of king fisher and brown creeper.

A real team effort everyone in the group found birds and contributed to the species count of 60 within 15 warbler. We continued to work on out fall vocalizations and aged and sexed as many birds in the field as we could. A fun day with lots to talk about.

Today's list was kept by Lenny Goldstein.

Nice seeing you,

Dennis
