Blog takes a break ( & so do I)

Tomorrow I begin leading the Brooklyn Bird Club to the great bird rich state of Delaware. Looking forward to a relaxing 4 day trip looking for breeding birds and shorebirds besides other species.

Because I need some relaxation n no interruptions, the blog takes a rest. I'll try to forward stuff in the evenings. Furthermore my phone will be off -silent -so no re-tweets or forwards.

With Swainson's a big draw, simply go to the Midwood n u will find birders. Make friends.Hope the boid is still there. Otherwise look whom I follow on my feed BBCKINGBOIDS. the link is on my blog left side. There's also a WhatsApp Kings & Queens bird alert for subscribing.

The last BBC walk is tomorrow. May 27th
Leader: Dennis Hrehowsik
Meet at Ocean/Parkside Avenues, “The Pergola” at 7:15 am
(Note: due to possible scheduling conflicts, leader substitutions may be made for...

Have fun while I "delmarvaling " south 😉 ( Bombay Hook..here I come!)

Hi Peter,

Well, it was very rainy yesterday. But the very, very small group persisted and we had a rather unique list for the day, including one of the rarest birds seen in the park in a while. Here it is..
No pix as it was really raining the whole time.
Thanks very much to Ed for co-leading in the rain and guiding us to the Swainson's spot.

Best regards,
Tom

Skulker surprise, skulker frustrates

The continuing SWAINSONS WARBLER threw a surprise maneuver this morning and then when it settled in usual residency , simply made it difficult for long looks , frustrating birders  at least during my lunch hour. Its a heck of a skulker.

The same discovered Ed Crowne-"Swainson celebre"- heard the Swainson this morning at the Lullwater Cove, just west of the Lullwater bridge. Thereby I tweeted out and sent a note to the birding listserves. This was a new location i presumed at the time. Then about a half hour later, it decided to throw mayhem by going back to the same Midwood location it originally spotted in . So again I took to retweeting , tweeting map coordinates and sending another note to the birding listserves. A Crazy bird.

Back at the Midwood, I presumed a number of morning birders found this bird on their luck. But for my small lunch time group, it was just giving fleeting looks in the dense shrubbery. It was across the middle path in the adjoining east woods section about 300 feet north from Center Drive container 7. A few birders with me saw it very briefly as it sang. While it quieted , it then about ten minutes later sang again , heard  by Eni Falci , so tantalizing close but unfortunately a large shrub blocked its view for me and others.

Generally this Swainson's is staying in the center of Midwood between the trail heads ( reverse 7) that start at the middle hardtop path. Learn the song and this helps you locate it without straining your eyes everywhere.

Swainsons warbler continues

Tom Stephenson leading the Thursday BBC walk tweeted out the mid morn report in the Midwood. I have no further details after that asking for more details exactly where. If you go, look for anybody brave enough to stand out in the rain.

230 Update: I ran into friend Bob ONeill and he mentioned that two birders he talked to heard the Swainsons and saw it just minutes before. With this inclement weather, its a good bet the bird will stick thru the night. Crown the WARBLER king: Prospect Megararity SWAINSONS WARBLER

There would be no argument that if we Prospect birders held an annual award for warbler king,Ed Crowne would win it unanimously for 2017. Thanks to Ed' superb hearing and profound memory, he found a megararity SWAINSONS WARBLER in southern Midwood. It's the first Swainson's since Tom Preston's May 24 th 1998 bird; its also the first one photographed-- by a number of birders.

I had just pulled away from a work site in south Midwood, cutting up a large limb blocking a trail when I saw Ed standing on the mulch trail .So natch, I stopped my vehicle and walked up to him. He says to me," do you hear that?" I strained my ears but of course couldn't. The bird sang again and Ed asked me again if I heard the loud singing.Nope.Ed says then " Its a Swainsons". So I replied oh cool I saw quite a number of them thrushes last week here. Ed looks at me intently and say," THE WARBLER!" My eyes almost popped out and I cussed under my breath.

For most of the morning the SWAINSONS sang sporadically giving away it's location after the initial confirmation. It ranged as far as the green containers at center drive margin to eventually settlement in a section of woods marked off by the mulch trails that start and end in a reversed 7 loop with the middle asphalt path. A number of birders were there at my lunchtime and despite its occasional singing I never saw it on my too brief lunch hour. This is up to 100 PM. A later Ebird note says someone saw it well off this particular hardtop path at 3 PM. Pending more reports which I haven't seen as of 530,perhaps the bird quieted down.I'm hoping this Swainson's duplicates the forest park bird years ago, staying over a week. All fingers crossed.

For specific directions , turn into the hardtop path that starts at Green container 7 from center drive. The first mulch trail that crosses was the initial location. The woods to the left beyond was the late morning residency .Good luck.

Superstar Ed Crowne is already looking good wearing a crown. Congratulations to Ed !! And thanks to Rob Bate updating the reports for me as well for my blog and retweets during my busy work morning.

late migrating birds

PROTHONOTARY WARBLER topped the day's highlights of four notable species today. As spring migration begins to wind down, birders look for those late migrating birds.

Will Pollard had the privilege of spotting the PROTHONOTARY. This swamp bird was seen at the back area of Upper Pool in Prospect's waterway around 4 PM.

Then singing ALDER FLYCATCHER became the second notable species.Reported in two different locations,Ed C heard the morning bird at West Island;in later afternoon,Tripper Paul found another in the Peninsula thumb. This part of May usually sees an uptick of empidonaxes as evident a YELLOW BELLIED FLYCATCHER found by Isabel Conte on the Hammerhead Peninsula across from West Island on the Brooklyn Bird Club Walk.

The last good bird is the continuing MOURNING WARBLER.It was found somewhere in the north Midwood section by Ryan Goldberg.I believed another was in Butterfly meadow but as my phone is charging,I'm not sure.

BAYBREASTED,TENNESSEE & CANADA warblers went through. These were reported by Ryan in the same area as the Mourning.

The BBC Walk tally is in a separate post, summarized by leader Bobbi.

Addendum: A MOURNING WARBLER  was seen in the Butterfly Meadow, viewed by the BBC group.

Hi Peter,

we had a bout 8 people on the walk today.  it was not dripping with birds, but there was always something to look at.  We looked for Ed's Alder and Karen O'Hearn heard it and a few people were able to pick it out (me not being one of them :-()

We also had nice looks at a (non-vocalizing) yellow-bellied flycatcher that Isabel found on teh Hammerhead.  I'm attaching 2 of Janet's photos.

TONS of Blackpolls.

Monday Mourning :)

The only report on this rainy day regards the continuing MOURNING WARBLER.

bird song expert Ed Crowne heard the bird in the Butterfly Meadow. Its likely the same bird heard and seen yesterday on the west slope ( per Ann Murray ) that continued down towards the Nethermead edge of Lookout Hill. Apparently with this bad weather, the Mourning decided to rest awhile. Not a bad Mourning...

under a cloud, saturdays nice variety of birds

Under the spectre of an ugly incident involving a crazed dogowner  attacking and robbing a birder in the Midwood ( see previous post),Saturday birding yielded a nice variety of birds. From the rare warblers to flycatchers and even out of season buteo, this nice cool day had its good offerings for birdathoners and birders alike.

KENTUCKY & MOURNING WARBLERS continue to delight and tease birders. On this day,the Lullwater cover is the scene of intense focus. The Kentucky refound by Ed Crowne caught his attention at the West side of Lullwater bridge. In the brush just east of Lullwater platform, it didn't offer alot of views but nevertheless seen by the lucky few. But at the Cove platform to the downward left in the peninsula on the cove left shore,a really skulky MOURNING WARBLER sang away the morning. I ventured late there but the platform occupied by two marijuana smoking individual s,I moved down trail lest I be having hallucinations of multiple rare birds. I had no luck.

However a few flycatchers-- empidonaxes-- got birdathoners attention. The continuing calling ACADIAN stays put in Ricks Place. But a calling ALDER was heard by Rob Jett on the Peninsula thumb; the ensuing tweet bought in a number of birders looking to add this prize for their day list.

Speaking of the Peninsula thumb, another BICKNELLS THRUSH materialized. Again its call song nailed the species.

The rest of the day featured unusual species.Dennis H walk " down a doodle"  group recorded out of season RED SHOULDERED HAWK;late SNOW GOOSE & AMERICAN COOT at Prospect Lake
