I rescued the bird for the Urban Park Rangers to pick up.it obviously was stressed and didn't fly when I picked it up. Fingers crossed for a good outcome.Pretty cool holding a majestic bird. Peter

LOWA IS IN!

Louisiana waterthrush put in an early appearance, under the Little Rock Arch bridge, walking across the Ravine stream. Rob Bate is the lucky observer of spring's first good warbler.

Minutes later it reappeared downstream at 9:42 am.

Group Will Not Appeal Court's Decision To Allow Brooklyn Bridge Park To Build Pier 6 Towers - BKLYNER

3 Loons continue

Louis Agassiz Fuertes Red-Throated Loon, Common Loon, Arctic Loon
According to Linda Ewing this morning, the 3 RED THROATED LOONS continue to grace Prospect waters.

The loons though together at times sees one straggling off to feed in the south Lullwater past the Terrace Bridge, near the rink, close to Teacup Island.

Meanwhile, the next Island is the locale where Will Pollard spotted PINE & YELLOW RUMPED WARBLERS via his tweet.

Matt Beck mentioned a few BROWN CREEPERS around.

In the early afternoon, the Terrace Bridge was a good vantage point to see on the side side two resting Redthroated Loons and 7 WOOD DUCK. The Wood Ducks- 4 drakes, 3 hens came out of the curved area. Matt Beck noted it to me the species 10 minutes before, where he mentioned also 3 RING NECKED DUCK in the Lullwater.

On a distressing note, again with fishing line, one of the loons looks like it has fishing line on /in its bill. We'll tend to it Thursday , but if the loon can still fly, its hard to rescue .

The irresponsible pollution and easily discarded or broken fishing line poses great dangers to waterfowl. Its an issue that should be bought up loud and clear to park authorities.

Update: on my way home Upper Pool held 5 RINGNECKED duck,3 drakes,2 hen

Two phoebes (1 at Crescent water, the other at Sylvan Water) and a few dozen cedard waxwings.

Feeders and stuff

This is the last FULL week for the feeders that was set up last November. As soon as the remaining two seed feeders are done, they will be taken down. The same for the suet and thistle when its consumed. By next Monday, trees and habitat will be blooming and birds have to be on their way.

In other news, two of the three remaining RED THROATED LOONs were spotted near the Peninsula thumb. The Upper Pool just south of the Tennis House, harbored 7 RING NECKED DUCK now, 4 drakes, 3 hens; a good showing for that locale with this species yet not uncommon during this time of year.

Threes

The continuing three RED THROATED LOONS stationed in Prospect Lakes northwest corner today are now matched by three Drake RED BREASTED MERGANSERS hanging near Peninsula thumb.

Looking quite content under a brilliant sunny day,the loons are a tight group, basic plumaged birds ,a delight to see. It's amazing to think how one loon attracted two more to this moderate sized 60 acre lake. And the same spoken for the MERGANSERS, part of the wonders of migration.

Later, two Drake RING NECKED DUCKS appeared by West Island Gazebo as we're also a mixed pair AMERICAN WIGEON.

A DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT was seen farther out on the Lake.

Double dose of loon

Two RED THROATED LOONS on Prospect Lake ,a rarity in itself for the number, topped the waterfowl vaiety today.

I saw one of the loons but Marc Brawer reported seeing the two. Perhaps later I'll look up the records.

The usual variety of ducks kept steady from the past week. The continuing RED BREASTED MERGANSER for the past month could be seen well. When I showed some folks the bird thru my scope,it was next to a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS.The latter totaled three as I found another seperate hen.Two WOOD DUCKS at Duck Island and a single drake RING NECKED DUCK near them rounded off the duck parade. RUDDY DUCKS was the dominant species with about 85 birds.

Later I found a pair RING NECKED DUCK aside from the lake. This pair was diving at Upper Pool. A gorgeous pair I enjoyed watching.

Early spring signs at Prospect

The slow awakening from winter's thaw begins as early migrants begin their appearances in Prospect Park.

By the Terrace Bridge, a BELTED KINGFISHER showed up for several birders. On the bridge the continuing PINE WARBLER reappeared.

Then a typical migrant of March migration, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD put in its appearance. The adult bird walked around the wooded section between the Lullwater Bridge and Lullwater Cove, along the fence at the trail leading to the platform. Kathy Toomey reported the sighting.

It's nice to get the extra hour in the late afternoon when the sun hilights Prospect lake's waterfowl.Good reports of late seem ideal to visit the lake after a family day earlier.

As reported earlier, the RED THROATED LOON hung around. I didn't find it immediately but about 540, it surfaced in the lake east section; I watched it wade towards the center.

Meanwhile, duck variety also made my visit worthwhile. Near the West island gazebo,5 RING NECKED DUCKS slept through my whole time; I muttered "sleepyheads". 4 HOODED MERGANSERS,the single drake RED BREASTED MERGANSER,and a pair of BUFFLEHEADS joined in. It seems like all the shovelers left.

On my way out,I spotted the GREAT BLUE HERON perched quietly on the West Island snag.

This morning I read tweets of a Brooklyn based snowy owl being repeatedly flushed by birders n photographers ,dangerous for a bird about to embark on its long journey north when it needs it's precious energy.

Read the code link above from Ebird.if it's there on Ebird,so should Twitter users comply.

Be a conscientious birder ,for the sake of the bird. Enjoy it from a safe distance ,say nothing.

3 Grebe day a first

Last Sunday's grebe trio of Red-necked,Horned and Pied-billed was a first occurring on the same day for Prospect Park.

Looking at recs I printed from Cornell Ebird and comparing years showed no match for Rednecked and Horned in any particular year. Due to that no match, Pied billed being more common was a moot question.

Amazing historical prospect moment for us grebeophiles. 🤗

Had a chance to do some birding before work yesterday morning and the
Ring-necked Ducks finally decided to cooperate for some photos.

An inexperienced warbler

I got to see the Terrace Bridge Pine Warbler. On my way to refill the bird feeders after work before the storm hits,Daisy Paul pointed out the bird.

Using the bridge's railing like its walkway, the first year drab bird was seeking insects within the railing's ( or balustrade as Janet S termed it) cracks. Later after I refilled the feeders, Tripper Paul pointed out the warbler- in the same spot-- before it ventured to a scraggy small mulberry tree growing out of the bridge's foundation; behind here the warbler also prowled. At one point during my double visit,a GOLDEN CROWNED KINGLET passed thru the mulberry. I have to wondered: will this early young Pine warbler survive the the impending storm? Will inexperience jeopardize it? Let's hope for the best.

Janet Schumacher reported CEDAR WAXWINGS at the feeders earlier in the day. This is the first report I heard of this species feeder visitation. While I saw Redwing Blackbirds,a COMMON GRACKLE,RED BELLIED WOODPECKER,WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH,no WAXWINGS for me.Its been a subpar year for the feeders but for some it is appreciated regardless.

Prospect lake continues to hold HORNED GREBE and RED BREASTED MERGANSER. Yesterday near Duck Island,I observed 5 WOOD DUCKS& 3 HOODED MERGANSERS.

10 EUROPEAN GOLDFINCHES reported by Marc Brawer this morning.

On a rare note,at BUSH TERMINAL PARK ,an ICELAND GULL surfaced. That bird appeared near the park entrance,in the water per Gus Keri.

Batter down the hatches! Another storm brewing. Will American Woodcock make the same mistake last year?
