Isabel Conte

For birders who knew her from the prospect walks, I'm passing word along that Isabel Conte passed away last Thursday , from complications of cancer.

She was a quiet type yet called the Brooklyn Bird Club her family. And that is a great honor for the club to have made someone's life...better and relevant

Rest in Peace , Isabel.  🌹🐦

A good Saturday birding opening season

Today felt like opening season in prospect park. I'm not talking baseball but rather the first good wave of anticipated birds.

During my walk celebrating my 50th, we succeeded finding the target species Golden crowned kinglet. They were in lots of places but concentrated along the back path of upper Pool. Here is where we found also Pine and Palm warbler, carolina wren and brown creepers. But the top bird was a reported Wilsons snipe that flushed from the back gate before we arrived. However it resurfaced at LilyPool at Binnen Bridge .

Enroute to the snipe, a suprise first; we were diverted by a quick flyby early Louisiana water thrush! But it was elusive and desiring getting the snipe we quicken the pace. However the water thrust spent later along the creek south of nethermead three arches bridge.

The snipe was a tough act but after closer search it was found hunkered under a limb. Some patience rewarded us when the snipe emerged ,feeding along the pool south side. A lifer for many in my group is satisfying. Also in lily pool were two gorgeous Rusty Blackbirds.

Kill deer among 100s of robins on the baseball fields could be classified a top hi light as well. Add yellow bellied sapsucker,Ring necked Duck and perched adult Cooper's Hawk  among 51 species we all saw makes it a terrific Start to opening season for migration.

Not a cooperative bird, giving only obscured looks and sticking to inner layer of yew trees. Cooper's hawk staking out this corner of the cemetery certainly a factor."

Rob Jett spotted it perched over some mean-looking thorns here (40.6510022, -73.9956973) before the flock bounded SSE towards Crescent Water. Photos"

Greater white fronted reposes at Holy Cross Catholic cemetery

Seen this morning at Prospect Lake Duck Island before flying out Eastward,  the GWFG wound up in the cemetery where my family is buried. ( From 1880's on..). Now that's pretty cool!

Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) (1)
- Reported Mar 16, 2025 11:22 by Peter Paul
- Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S218891061
- Media: 3 Photos
- Comments: "At the suggestion of Prospect Park birders who said the GWFG flew in this direction, I stopped by on my way north. It spent the whole time I was there grazing with about a dozen CANG near the center of the cemetery."

Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) (1)
- Reported Mar 16, 2025 12:52 by Junko Suzuki
- Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=40.647158,-73.9380945&ll=40.647158,-73.9380945
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S218989432
- Comments: "Apparently the same individual seen recently and earlier this morning at Prospect Lake. It was seen flying off from Prospect Park towards east by Forrest around 9:25 am and was relocated here by Tripper around 11:25 am. I ended up walking all the way from Prospect Park where I was hoping to see this goose originally. I arrived the cemetery around 12:50 am. This was my first visit here and had no idea where to find the goose and I didn’t see any birder, so I checked right and left while walking on the path from the main entrance. When I came into the mid section I finally saw several Canada Geese. I scanned the area and quickly I found what I was looking for among some more Canada Geese. It was peacefully feeding on grass. Brownish gray goose with white front around light pinkish orange bill, orange legs. While I was looking at it and taking photos, I saw Paul S in distance walking this way. We observed the goose together for a bit more."

- Comments: "Foraging w chickadees and kinglets in evergreen shrub. At first thought was a kinglet but even before I saw it more clearly, I thought it was foraging too slowly to be a kinglet. Under parts dull yellow wash, w more intense yellow on breast and undertail coverts, whiter on belly between. Blurry, faint streaks on breast. No notable markings or color on under-tail feathers. Dull brown above. Thought I saw some kind of subtle facial pattern but wasn't confident enough in moment to report for sure now. Larger than kinglet but still on smaller side for a warbler, compact. In moment thought either a vireo or warbler. No notable behavior (like tail pulling). Not 100% positive on ID bc did not get a super clear/long look but based on markings and nearby warbler sightings I feel good reporting as OCWA."

Maya Bank - Shikman passing

I just read sad news from Staten Island that Maya passed away from cancer. She was too young . She was from accounts i read an exceptional naturalist particularly in the field of insects.

I have not met Maya regretfully but heard often of her  whenever it involved Butterflies. From a friend's Facebook post, she was an exceptional kind hearted person. She left the birding and nature communities too soon.

Woodcock migration

The woodcocks are coming through! In its peak time during this period, a few were spotted today in Prospect following yesterday's several in Greenwood Cemetery .

My coworker Mark like the rest of us was doing trash pickup ,typical Monday assignments following the weekends. As he walked through the 9/11 grove - the north slope or rise at the north end of Long Meadow unto east drive, flushed two American Woodcocks . One even did the famed walk. I have his video.Later , covering another area for littler ,he flushed another woodcock in the Sparrow bowl, between the Tennis and picnic houses for a third bird.

It's a guess how many more there are in prospect, hidden and unseen behind the fences in those woods . We will never know

This morning I decided to chase a woodcock. And there's no better place than quiet undisturbed Greenwood cemetery.

Figuring a good place to start around Battle hill, I had the fortune of running into old friends Rob Jett and his wife Robin . And all together we went birding. First since we started on Hemlock Ave we had to seek out the long winter resident Red Headed Woodpecker. It didn't take long. As soon as we arrived at the horse chestnut it favors, there it was high on its favorite perch. Afterwards we went a hunting for a timberdoodle.

We walked quite a bit without seeing a doodle. But as we near the Tweed plot, Rob stepped near a heavy leaf cluttered Mossy path and a flash took off, my miss as I was conversing with Robin. But as a secondary prize Rob finds me a perched Coopers hawk and favorites cool looking Cedar Waxwings by Dell water.

When I got home ,I thought helping out Dennis for his timberdooooodle walk tomorrow with the location today. While on errand  for my mother and sister to 9th Street, and lunch, Dennis replies he s got a woodcock along dell path. Natch, I'm close by so why not chase a second time.

So three of us are going woodcock hunting. I quickly got my map to look for the spot . When I arrived , I parked in front of a big yew along Dell Avenue, left my family in the car to try my luck on Dell path. No luck. So , regretfully I got back in the car.i checked Dennis's text again and saw he sent a map. So, asking Google for directions, it turns out the spot was right where I parked! 😆. So out I go, walked 10 feet looked left at the yew and there i see a woodcock walking away. I beckoned my sister from the car but the bird disappeared. I assumed it flushed away.

We went uphill to look. Meanwhile my sister hears peenting call. It sounds like off to our left but I didn't want to leave my mother alone in the car . After a few minutes we head back down. But I hesitated  and decided to look again behind the yew tree. Bingo! The woodcock is hunkered down in the leaf clutter but we'll see. I got my sister on the bird .after some effort she successfully located it and says it's a funny looking bird ,😆.

So that's another story I can tell now: how I took off far only to find the woodcock was right under my nose all this time!
