Andrew Baksh's report of a hen KING EIDER (see previous post) is I think a big deal. Not only it's a rare species ( this species doesn't have a high population in the east) but finding one within the boroughs waterways simply doesn't happen.
This late fall influx of King Eiders is gearing up to becoming a good year. At least five at Riis Beach and one at Staten Island Great Kills Park are coastal venues sightings; but Andrews sighting this morning at Army Terminal Pier 4 has to be one of very few records in NYC Harbor. I'll look later.
