Juvenile spotted sandpiper (I think; see picture) at Sylvan Water this morning.  Only other possible migrant I saw was a red-winged blackbird on Battle Hill  Other avian species: northern flicker, house finch, chipping sparrow, green heron, great egret, house wren, warbling vireo, northern cardinal, and a fledgling northern mockingbird begging for food.

Early fall start

Summer swelter gets to you and so getting out into Prospect after a workweek that left me exhausted seem like the best option

With no luck for an up close view of Least Bittern,I settled for a Lake attracted FORSTERS TERN.I caught sight of the term off the Peninsula thumb soon disappearing towards Lakeside rink about 1034 am. Just have to remember the Id tip " frosted are the FORSTERS wingtips.

I also hoped for that Louisiana waterthrush. It did show but for Ann Murray spotting it at the Ravine Ambergill Falls. I simply didn't have the energy to walk thhere. A RUDDY DUCK at west shore --in its red plumage- assuaged my lack of effort.

I knew those Ravens are smart

Cold front tonight

Though quite quite early for songbird movement, nevertheless for shorebirds, its about that time.

A cold front is moving thru tonight, fall's birds even in the height of summer, kicks off. ( Out in Long Island Hecksher state park area, photos on Facebook of a few Pectoral Sandpipers were taken by a friend of mine).

But perhaps a few warblers might get a head start...for a time now that's been extremely quiet.

Federal Duck Stamp

The Duck Stamp went on sale June 23rd. It not only provides critical funding for wildlife conservation and land purchases, but also provide educational funding as well and other important programs. Since its inception in 1934, it has provide close to 1 Billion dollars in sales , making it THE most successful conservation program in the US,

from a qouted website

Since 1934, more than 135 million Federal Duck Stamps have been purchased. These purchases have generated almost $1 billion for the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund, and have been used to purchase close to 6 million acres of habitat.

I am buying my new one as starting in July 1st, it gives "free" admission to any National Wildlife Refuge that collects a fee.

This year's art depiction is of Canada Geese ( ironically)

what makes this call?

from a freind:

Singing in the trees off the northwest corner of the Sylvan Water.  The song was DEE-dee-dee DEE-dee-dee DEE-dee-dee, repeated persistently in a high pitch.  That is roughly the pattern of a common yellowthroat, but not exactly (a CYT goes DEE-dee-dee Dee-dee-dee DEE), and the sound wasn't the same.  Any other ideas?

email me if you know.
