Bush Terminal pier park's day

A few good birds gave BTPP its turn for good birds.

Gus Keri reported two very good ducks. One was a Drake EURASIAN WIGEON ,maybe the one from Gravesend Bay; the second duck is the continuing hen REDHEAD,found near the park entrance

Another observer stopped by,Rafael Campos who spotted BALD EAGLE. This immature eagle went straightway towards Staten Island. Also reported Common Raven must have been  glad the big bird passed thru.

Fwd: eBird Report - Prospect Park--Prospect Lake, Feb 27, 2018

Three Sisters is today's hotspot, as a variety of waterfowl sought its cozy shelter.

The numbers belong to the WOOD DUCK, as I spotted 9 birds  by the water snag on the western most island, with 6 wading close by. Later in mid day I saw only two Woods on the tree snags. But with hard to see nooks and crannies, it could be more Woods.

A pair of RINGNECKED DUCKS came into view around 2 pm by the eastern 3 Sisters, a mixed pair that was a cool thing to see. One hen BUFFLEHEAD hung close to them.

Farther away, the continuing RED BREASTED MERGANSERS could be seen;like the Ringnecks, they are also a mixed pair. Also continuing is the HORNED GREBE, one of the longest stays for this uncommon rare species for Prospect Lake.

Hi Peter,

The redhead ducks are back at Ridgewood Reservoir, 3 joined the 20 or
so ring-necked ducks and a couple of mallards. There is also an
increase in redwing blackbirds and grackles, joining the starlings'
murmuration, and were followed by a coopers hawk.

Prospect duck migration

Yesterday's impressive Ring necked Duck display was supplanted by today's Wood Duck show of force. Linda Ewing observed the good sighting on the Lake.

A tweet from Linda around 9 am revealed the Woods outnumbering the Ring necks. 20 WOOD DUCKS were seen near the Three Sisters island, besting only 5 RINGNECKED DUCKS for today.

Let those ducks keep coming!

Duck passages

Ring Necked Duck Painting - Ring-necked Duck by Anthony J Padgett
.
RING NECKED DUCKS decorated Prospect Lake after reports from Gus, and the LESSER SCAUP put in an excellent view as well. On top of that, a hen REDHEAD continues at Bush Terminal Park. Not a duck, but a good bird to see, HORNED GREBE mingled near the RingNecks.

I had to see for myself the Prospect Lake scenery. From my West island Rustic shelter viewing spot, I could see a gorgeous view of 13 drake RING NECKED DUCKS tightly together with good light upon them;it's a great duck to enjoy. Very similar to their color and profile, a LESSER SCAUP drake with its peaked head stayed calmly put at the eastern side of Three Sisters Islands in the middle of the Lake's southern side.

A drake WOOD DUCK hid along the south shore of Duck Island.

Tim Graves reported the continuing REDHEAD hen at Bush terminal Park today. Found yesterday by Richard Payne, its likely the first for the park there.

Its duck migration folks, enjoy it.

Update: Ring necked flock increased to 15  birds this late afternoon; Red breasted Merganser drake present as do the three Hooded Mergansers

Fwd: GBBC eBird Report - Prospect Park--Prospect Lake, Feb 18, 2018

A unity of ducks settled into Prospect Lake today, an Olympian theme in a way as the magical ten species was observed.

I got out late, just before 2pm ,to enjoy the brilliance of sunshine and was rewarded for my motivation. I could see in the Lake's center originally 6 RING NECKED DUCKS--all drakes- joined by at the time I counted 5 HOODED MERGANSERS with my bins. Later closer looks bought up the number to 7 &6. That's the Spirit I say!
Along my pursuit,I happened to see the HORNED GREBE;it was diving in West Island cove where also I spotted the AMERICAN WIGEON pair. Later I thought I saw two Horneds, confirmed by Kathy Toomey as those birds were far from my western shore spot.Kathy also reported near the Grebes two BUFFLEHEADS,the tenth duck species on the lake.

As it is late February, spring is starting , when ducks begin to move north , often times staging their numbers.

I bet that sounds good to ears: "spring".

Gloomy Monday morning mergs

A surprisingly chilly but heavy overcast Monday morning would have dimmed birding hopes. Yet a Merganser observation brightens the moment dissipating the air of moodiness.

As raindrops pelted my unprotected garments,I sought shelter at the West Island gazebo. I was surprised I was the only occupant. From my dry spot,I scanned the lake waters of Prospect. At first I almost passed the drab distant profiles of hen HOODED MERGANSERS; then the drakes appeared. Feeding along the phragmites of western Three Sisters island, all told, six "Hoodies" dove frequently there.

After awhile at my stand,I picked up a pair of American WIGEON,a distant hen BUFFLEHEAD and the usual suspects before picking up and going. ( Later the Hooded flock split into threes,to reside near Duck and Three Sisters Islands)

But there was another merganser. Along the west shore, something dove. And I thought all the ducks here are dabblers. It turns out when "diver" resurfaced, to be the RED BREASTED MERGANSER hen very close. I was wondering what's the deal here: drake one day,hen another, then once in awhile both.

I wound up with eight duck species, not bad for gloomy Monday. When the sun came out mid-afternoon and I wandered back out,I picked up the Drake WOOD DUCK ,trying to wade through the big bodies of Canada Geese ,roadblocks for the little guy.

A short visit to the feeders found minimal activity. Only a White breasted nuthatch was of note. But there's a subtle change though. Two White throated sparrows are sporting bright heads now,a head start for spring romance. So maybe that groundhog was wrong after all, spring is arriving early.

A last good bird before I exited the park turned out to be a hawk. Specifically,an adult COPPERS HAWK ,preening itself as it perched in the Sweetgums Grove between the gazebo and West Island. This is a preferable spot for me to stop for potential winter finches. They weren't there,no thanks to the handsome Coop.

Oh,Happy Birthday Abe.

Prospects presidential birds

I joined Dennis' Prospect walk this morning and for a February date it was a pretty morning. We saw a few Rarities and the usual winter population one expects in mid Winter.

Birding along the Lake south shoreline, the first good bird appeared. Across the lake at the Peninsula shore, a  HORNED GREBE continues. This sighting soon followed by a circling PEREGRINE FALCON overhead, spotted by Dennis.

Getting closer to the sizable gull flock on the ice,Kathy spotted our best bird: BLACK HEADED GULL. It's the continuing immature, seen at the far western section of the lake. As the group got closer, the bird moved closer to Well Drive. Nevertheless the lighting was good and viewers succeeded with great looks through my scope.

When we ran into more birders at the west shore, the Black headed vanished. It wasn't until 1210 that it reappeared much to the satisfaction and relief of several patient birders waiting for its return.

A few notable ducks were  present on Prospect lake. WOOD DUCK drake,AMERICAN WIGEON pair & a hen BUFFLEHEAD hiding among the Ruddy Ducks finished off my productive list.

Black headed Gull returns

The BLACK HEADED GULL makes a return trip to Prospect Lake.

This mid-morning around 10:50, Ryan Goldberg re-found the rare gull on frozen Prospect Lake just south of the Wellhouse phragmites. Later Rob Bate lucked in , observing a sleeping Black Headed just west of the main flock in the western sector of the lake. So , search the gull flock when its an iced over lake. You may luck in .( ppssst. a scope helps)

Dreary walk home

The rain was dreadful, cold and bone chilling as I walked home from work. I did have an objective opting to walk thru the pools section instead around the ballfields.

I don't if ever mention Mallards in my posts since it's a common species. But when I see 108 of them close knit feeding on the super soaked ballfields,it's an eye opening. Mixed in with Canada geese ,a couple of  Black Ducks and a smattering of Ring billed gulls, they all looked happy in the downpour.

Making haste through the rain,it was those Horned Grebes on my mind. From my wet perch at the peninsula wood bench,I searched vainly the lake while trying to hold my bag and bins upright. No luck. So I searched the large gull flock. Having no scope makes Gulling harder. A drop of my bins and lo and behold there are the two HORNED GREBES coming out of the phragmites edge on my right; they came quite close to me, paying no mind, perhaps rain and hunger distracting them.
Ok,I got them, now let me get the heck out of this dreadful rain!

But there was one more nice bird as I approached Well Drive junction. The WOOD DUCK Drake didn't get my attention immediately, but I spotted it on the narrow lawn strip. It flushed and flew over the short metal fence to join the shovelers.

Hump wednesday revelation

Well, I didn't hear of any camels or Hump backed whales on Prospect Lake, but two HORNED GREBES will do. In this bad weather phenomenon, that the hope for with rare species that are forced down to wait out storms becomes the pursuit.

Daisy Paul was the beneficiary (among a few) of the double sighting of the HORNED GREBES.;both birds hung off the lake side of the Peninsula shoreline. Daisy posted the checklist with the photos

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S42565470

A good sighting for what usually is a coastal salt water bird

A WOOD DUCK, flagged as unseasonable for the park was spotted by Richard Payne. See his checklist https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S42547383

A dreary day but for some bad weather birders, well rewarded for the effort.

Snow day humor

Hi Peter-

Pics of the hauled-out Harbor Seal along Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park this afternoon.

Good for the park, a Red-throated Loon and continuing Common Goldeneye were also in the area.

Why winter Prospect lake makes the park better

One asset that for Prospect Park makes it a good spot compared to other city parks is its freshwater lake. With 60 acres and a couple of islands to its fame, winter birds of rarity do get attracted to the lake. Today another good bird makes the list for this winter season , found by Karen O'Hearn.

Around 1:20, Karen sends out a tweet reporting BLACK-HEADED GULL. Having not seen this bird personally in awhile, I responded quickly and got there as Karen stuck around. We didn't find it right away ;but as she headed home, I found the bird about 250 feet from the western shoreline , next to a Ring billed Gull.It was an immature.  The Gull though disappeared about 15 minutes later making my hasty pursuit fortuitous. Thanks to Karen. There hasn't been any reports after despite Rob Bate searching.

Earlier, staying on point about the Lake's attractiveness for winter birds, the RED THROATED LOON stayed at least another  day. Spotting it from the rink shore, I took off for the Peninsula for a better closer look. Just at the thumb tip, the loon looked like it was stuck to the ice. I thought maybe help was need. But along came 4 NYC Urban Park Rangers after I left , they got close enough to the Loon for it to escape its icy grip.

The lake is on a roll. Will Wednesday bring anything new? A camel perhaps ? or "Hump" backed Whale?

Bird Trax

You might have noticed to the left the blank screen of the ebird Birdtrax. Apparently there is a problem with the gadget. I tried resetting but it appears the problem is over there.or them..

So, just have to wait awhile..

Loon "hot roll"

In a space of 18 hours, Prospect achieved both loon species for the year. Hence the saying: "when it rains it pours"

This morning, Linda Ewing found a RED THROATED LOON between the Peninsula tip and Duck Island. Responding to her 10:04 tweet, I found the diving bird in the same area, drifting abit towards the Peninsula cove about 15 minutes later.

The previous night, 437 pm to be exact, Russ found the COMMON LOON on the Lake. Throw in a HORNED GREBE and we have a remarkable hot roll of sightings for seabirds in such a brief time.

Update A 3:35 tweet from Bobbi Manian places the Red throated Loon near West Island where a Wood Duck also appeared.

Thanks to all who joined the walk this morning!

I posted a few photos from the walk here.

We spotted 19 bird species, and one coyote cardboard cutout (goose deterrent) that had duped me earlier in the morning.

Highlights included Bufflehead, Red-breasted Merganser, and the star of the show...a juvenile male Common Goldeneye! Happy to hear this was a "lifer" for many of you. Full bird list below.

See you next time!

Fwd: eBird Report - Prospect Park--Prospect Lake, Feb 4, 2018

My timing was off. As I went into Prospect around 315 ,I thought I was satisfied spotting a pair of AMERICAN WIGEON, the continuing Drake RED BREASTED MERGANSER, a perched Double crested Cormorant making my drizzy start worthwhile. It turns out much credit to Russ spotting good birds on the Lake.

Russ had both COMMON LOON and a HORNED GREBE around 430 ! I can't remember in any recent memory both these species on the same day same time. So kudos to Russ and always think positive even when it's a gloomy looking rainy day: that's when you might get a rarity.

The groundhog ( the puxatawney one,not Staten island) wuz right: it's winter

The afternoon hard charging cold wind harassed my walk home from work. Yet even with the lack of birds, there are moments to enjoy on this Groundhog day.

Among the large horde of Canada Geese on the ballfields, one stood out. Not anything rare, but a banded Canada. It had a yellow neck band designated "H064". I'll enter it soon.

After filling  two of the feeders,6 NORTHERN CARDINALS appeared, winter's iconic birds I enjoy seeing.

Kathy Toomey mentioned seeing the Drake RED BREASTED MERGANSER on Prospect lake. After departing her at the feeders,I went to look. It turns out the Drake has a companion,a hen Red breasted. The pair was seen off the Peninsula thumb. Moments later both flew to the west section. An enjoyable sight to see but the cold high wind egged me on homeward.

Some hardy American Robins passed through along Well Drive, winter no problem for those nine birds.

I bet the PA. Groundhog was all cozy and warm in its burrow with the fireplace going. Maybe its even watching Bill Murray. After its prediction of six more weeks winter, why not?

Coopers Hawk and red-tail at Sylvan Water; 1 small flock house finches; a few chipping sparrows; 3 or 4 fox sparrows (surely the same ones I've been seeing); 3 small flocks of juncos; a few chipping sparrows' a sapsucker, a downy, and a few red-bellied woodpeckers; and one white-breasted nuthatch (heard only).  Also, 2 mallards and 4 mallard decoys.

Yesterday I saw a Carolina wren.
