Late mid morning walk around the Park.  The activity was kind of low.  But I saw at least 3 sps of warblers, 1 of them breeds in the Park (Yellow), the other 2, probably the last species around PP: Blackpoll & Redstart. Time to visit other places around NY State.

We had a small but brave group today, willing to walk many miles in search of the last of the migrants in PP.

 

The highlights were Indigo Bunting, nesting Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Green Heron and Barn Swallow; the feral rabbit from Monty Python's Holy Grail.....and we did get 4 species of warblers...including some interesting drab Blackpoll's...

Lots of singing Red-eyed and Warbling Vireos....and not a lot else!

Peter. Super slow day in the park for migrants with only 4 warbler species one of which is a local breeder and the other three were females including the dreaded female Blackpoll Warbler, harbinger of no more spring.  It was a great group of 9 birders and we had fun.  It did feel more like a summer day as most of the activity was of breeding birds, including fledgling Robins and Starlings.

Migration over ( I think)

A hot day and little to be seen.

Though while I wass at the Falkill Fall this afternoon doing some work , a few birds did appear seeking cool respite.I didnt have my bins but I was able to make out one GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, one RED EYE VIREO, Cardinals, maybe a Warbling vireo and a warbler to throw in, too far away to identify.

Having missed my chances to get up to the Vale on Saturday or earlier to see the staked out and cooperative Bicknell's, I tried to go directly there Sunday morning. But walking through the woods between Lilly pond and Center Drive I heard a song which I believed to be a Bicknell's. No bird was in sight, but I played the Bicknell's song from the Sibley app and instantly there was a gray-cheeked type thrush in front of me, which moved too close for binoculars on a second playing. It did not sing for me.

When I got to the Vale I mentioned my experience to some other birders, who stated "Oh no, the bird was here - we photographed it". So - is it really all that unlikely that there were two Bicknell's in the park on Sunday?

Mira Furgoch and I birded Prospect Park yesterday with our target being the confiding Bicknell's Thrush.
We ended up observing and studying the cooperative Bicknell's with several other birders including Jane Simmons, Karen O'Hearn and Tom Stephenson.
Despite missing out on some of the Flycatchers--14 species of Warblers and 60 + species in total was made possible by the Intel sharing of birders like Alexandra Ratay, Micheal Yuan and Joshua Malbin.

Hi Peter,

I wanted to report in on my experience with the Bicknell's today, and also give you a couple of photos to post, if you'd like.

Today I went in late AM and ran into Mira (Mira, please forward to Jane and Andrew if you think they'd be interested), Kathy, Andrew, Jane and Alexandra, who had all seen the bird.

We had a couple of fast sightings until it finally emerged and we watched it sing, confirming the ID.The Bicknell's shots attached are of the bird that sang.

We had heard about a bird with very white wing spots, and had seen a flash of that earlier before the bird really emerged. The bird we eventually confirmed had very small greater covert spots, but nothing bright.

Later in the AM (after the Blackburnian), I went back and found a Gray-cheeked Thrush also in the same area. This bird, with photos attached, is obviously different; the bill base is darker (the gape seems yellowish in one shot but the mandible is mostly dark), and it is missing the covert spots of the Bicknell's.

When this bird turned around, however, it had a very bright white loose feather in the covert area, which at one point stuck up, but looked mostly like a white line. It was only visible on the right side. The left was normal. Unfortunately I couldn't get a picture of it from this side.

There was also a singing and calling Swainson's Thrush in the same area: thrush alley as it were.

Anyway, hope this is of interest. It's great this bird has been willing to hang around for so long!

20 birders met at the pergola on an unseasonably cool morning for a flycatcher and thrush search and workshop to close out the spring migration series of walks. Highlights were Alder Flycatcher, 16 Warblers, Grey Cheeked and Bicknell's Thrush. The Cooperative Bicknell's sang several times and gave great views for all. 67 species total. Thanks for letting me lead this series it was truly a privilege.
