All reports in for todays' birding in Prospect; Broadwinged Hawk

After work, I continued to bird. Most surprising was a hawk sighting at Binnen Pool, a juvenile BROAD-WINGED HAWK that came straight low over me from the southeast corner of the Nethermead. Going over the pool, it momentarily perched in the woods before I lost it. However, a few moments later, I saw the hawk soaring over the Pagoda Structure , in circling flight before it dropped out of it and flew south towards the Lullwater. A pretty cool sight and totally unexpected.

Also seen  on the way home, a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER at the back of Lily Pool, by the closed viewing platform, and CANADA WARBLER in the Lullwater middle, a female judging by its light "necklace". Here also  was another BLUE-WINGED  unless it traveled from my Lily Pool sighting.  NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH  was seen in the woods above the "Sparrowbowl" near the Tennis House.

A very good workday for me....   ;)

Below are today reports from the great birding today, including the first Thursday Walk led by Rob Bate subbing for Tom S.,  with rare SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER the top sighting.

15 species warblers counted from scanning the reports ( if my Short term memory is good)

With today's first good Fall push, hopefully more good days to come....

Rob Bate BBC walk :

Migration is underway.  Nine of us ventured out on the inaugural fall 2013 Thursday morning walk starting from Grand Army Plaza.  It was slow at first but we hit paydirt with a Louisianna Waterthrush in the horse trail puddle by Rick's Place.  There was good activity for the rest of our walk puncuated by periodic lulls in the action.  Good warbler activity with lots of Redstarts and Black and White Warblers.  Good looks at a couple of Canada Warblers as well as the Yellow-throated Vireo at the base of the road to Lookout Hill.  Also of note was a flock of Semipalmated Sandpipers flying above the Lullwater on their way to more suitable habitat.

Adam :

Hi Peter

I missed many of the goodies -- thought I had a glimpse of the Philly Vireo, but not sure. Today's park list should be a good one, judging by what I heard from others. And what an amazing day it was!

Cheers!

Adam
