A more quiet day except for scanty reports in Prospect and the Yellow Throated Warbler reported yesterday.
Upper Pool was the site of GREEN HERON this morning with scattered warblers reported lately. The LOUISIANA WATERTHUSH visited the Lower Pool observed by the first BBC thursday walk. Their report is pending.
NORTHERN PARULA WARBLER came quite close at the Terrace Bridge , sharing the moment with BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER and BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEE. ( Mike Yuan)
RUSTY BLACKBIRD continues at Lower Pool reported by Paige Linden.
And an interesting report about the Yellow Throated Warble;Joshua Malbin mentioned that Wendy Lotus spotted the bird at the Brooklyn Botanic garden yesterday. She took a picture of the bird on the lawn.No further details given.

we had 22 people at the start of today's walk! It was a beautiful day, you couldn't ask for nicer weather. Unfortunately the birds were not out celebrating. We dipped on both the Yellow-throated Warbler and the Solitary Sandpiper, but did manage to find the LOWA which was a life birds for 4 people! We tallied a respectable 50 species, but we had to work for them.

Warm day feels like Lousiana
A warm day that reached the upper 70's made it feel like Louisiana. Only that it's the bird not the state I'm thinking about.
I finally got to see the bird, a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH found wandering in the Ravine creek. Mostly kept to the lower Ravine in mid morning where I saw it, thanks to an alert from ED Crowne; it was elusive, then cooperative for a short bit in the midsection just before the Ravine Pool. Later in the early afternoon, it moved upstream , found by Vinny Falci, just south of the Little Rock Arch bridge, before it wandered farther up closer to the Esdale Bridge in the Ambergill. Regardless where, just about many observers saw the bird.
In the same general vicinity, other warblers were spotted. PINE, PALM , YELLOW RUMPED joined a few BLACK & WHITE.
The Ravine continuing its hot roll, recording WINTER WREN and a pair of WOOD DUCKS as well in the stream. Vinny and Eni saw BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER over the Esdale.
No reports of the Yellow -throated Warbler today despite the bird club valiant search on their first spring '17 walk.

This morning, a 1Cy (calendar year) ICELAND GULL (Kumlieni) was observed at Brooklyn Army Terminal Pier 4. At some point it flew north, and I relocated it at Bush Terminal Piers Park.
While looking for the Iceland Gull I found a drake EURASIAN WIGEON. Which was in the company of a hen and drake American Wigeon. The other highlight from there was a Raven, a bird that I am seeing with some regularity in that location.
In further evidence that Spring has Sprung, I observed multiple Cabbage Whites feeding and fluttering about the vegetation plus several migrating Red Admirals.

post work walk, other day reports
My walk on a then quite warm day turned up welcomed sightings. As my goal was to to find a waterthrush, which I almost saw, single WARBLER species came in
At the back view of the Upper Pool, three WARBLER species got on my list. Thanks to a new birder Justin,a PINE,PALM & YELLOW RUMPED WARBLER flew close in ,with the Pine picking off insects or gnats hovering off the big tree next to the fence.Linda spotted a waterthrush but it disappeared quickly and I missed by seconds. Its identity uncertain, we blew it off trying to wait for it to come back
Later I found Kathy, Linda and another birder looking at a RUSTY BLACKBIRD on the opposite shore of the Ambergill pool.It took me time to find the dark bird among the wet leaves.
I went off to look for the Solitary sandpiper.I had no luck; Kathy said one had to have patience for the bird to show itself.
Kathy mentioned that she saw the seasons first BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER at Terrace Bridge.Another birder I ran into said he found one at Music Pagoda. Also new was BLUE HEADED VIREO in the Ravine reported by Tripper Paul around 1:57. Tripper witnessed a Cooper's hawk battling a Kestrel as an Osprey flew by above the Nethermead.
Sean Sime meanwhile held a personal hawk watch at Greenwsood Cemetery. Slow and steady he says seeing NORTHERN HARRIER,COOPERS HAWK,SHARPSHINNED HAWK,RED SHOULDERED HAWK,AMERICAN KESTREL ,RED TAILED HAWK ,MERLIN & even BALD EAGLE.Oh a bunch of double created cormorants too.

Don't forget that tomorrow (Tuesday April 11) is the first of the season Prospect Park migration walk! Meet Rob, Bobbi, and Kathy at the Vanderbilt Playground entrance to Prospect Park at 7:30 a.m. The weather looks great (and maybe that Yellow-throated Warbler will stick around.)

Hey Members & Friends!
May 13th, Birdathon Saturday, is fast approaching. This year's designated beneficiary of our annual Birdathon is the heroic Wild Bird Fund https://www.wildbirdfund.org/about-us/ who just rescued 100 or more American Woodcocks during this year's snowstorm that coincided with the woodcock's peak migration. The WBF is the "go to" organization in the metro area for rescuing, rehabbing and releasing any wild birds that have suffered an injury or are in need of medical care.
The idea of the Birdathon is to form or join a team and go out and count bird species. Typically participants hit up friends and family for donations, usually a set amount per bird species counted during the course of the day.
Bobbi Manian roberta.manian@gmail.com has graciously agreed to organize teams for us again this year so, if you have a team or would like to join a team, please let her know. (Also, she could use a co-director if anyone would be willing to giver her a hand and lessen her burden.)
Please feel free to participate at any level you wish. Some of us like to have a leisurely cup of coffee before setting out for the day and other teams (you know - fanatics) get up before dawn to try and bag an owl or two before the sun comes up - it's your call.

For those not up for a full day of birding, Michele Dreger's Introduction to Birdwatching group will meet at the Boathouse in Prospect Park at noon, and bird for a few hours - all are welcome here without reservation - bring binoculars!
The idea is to have fun and raise some money for a worthy cause on International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) - http://www.birdday.org. This year's official theme is "Stopover Sites: Helping Birds Along the Way" and Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery are world class migrant traps, providing food and cover for our migrating songbirds flying over our vast metro area. Let's go out and have some fun now that spring is finally here!

YTWA lingers; raptors are good
They are low and they are high. Birders today had both directions to look ,down and up for good birds in a few spread out locations on this very sunny day.
First and foremost, the YELLOW THROATED WARBLER YTWA importantly lingers on. It stayed put to yesterday's original location, the English ivy trail by Binnen falls. One report noted the YTWA actually inside the overlook below the falls. It eventually ventured to the other side of the fallsbut later in the day became adventurous, wandering down the West Lullwater towards Terrace Bridge and back again 60 yards according to one observer. The rare WARBLER even visited the Rustic Arbor on the south shore.
On the ground as well is LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.spotted in three different places, two in Prospect, one in Greenwood Cemetery. The first report placed a bird in the lower Ravine below the Nethermead Bridge; the second bird if not the same had a bird on Upper Pool island with the wood duck box.The third bird ,in the cemetery appeared in the Dellwater i pursued after Palm Sunday services; but that was a dry run for me . despite looking at Crescent water,Sylvan water and Valley Water,no waterthrush.Only two GREAT EGRETS at Valley compensated my luckless try.
A SOLITARY SANDPIPER appeared as a bonus for the YTWA chasers. This shorebird appeared in the Lily Pool by the overlook there in the back.Lily Pool empties into Binnen Falls.
On this day though ,birders were also busy looking up. BLACK VULTURE flew over Prospects Nethermead, a high bird but its telltale diagnostic wingtip field marks identified it.Kristin Costello spotted the vulture.Over at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, an adult BROADWING HAWK flying northeast was spotted by Sean Sime

YELLOW THROATED WARBLER in Prospect
This particular time of the year is when we look for overshoots or strays from the southern breeders. In particular regards Yellow throated Warblers. Marc Brawer is man of the hour as he found one in English Ivy across from Prospects Boathouse.
When I received a tweet from Ed Crowne at Brooklyn Bridge Park,I had to laugh. Because I planned today's Brooklyn Bird Club field trip around small Brooklyn Parks with Fort Greene on the agenda- last year' s Yellow throated WARBLER (YTWA)visitation on this day- I had the day right but the wrong place. I guess I have to send back my defective crystal ball; I wonder if Walmart will refund my money. My trip details later as the prospect YTWA needs more storytelling.
From early reports, vague then to me,the YTWA hung out opposite the boathouse. It became clear later the full details. Early morning Marc happened upon a puzzling bird in or near English Ivy on a small slope along the trail by the Binnen Falls trail and platform.Ed came along by chance and identified the bird. This YTWA is one of the most cooperative YTWA I heard and saw, on the ground and low for many observers to view , from the original spot to the Lullwater Bridge. I swung by about 2 PM with some of my group and profited immensely with this rare WARBLER scouring the shoreline wall ,likely picking off crevice insects. From 8: 45 to almost 3 PM, this YTWA gave its all for everyone who came a checklist bird even a life bird for my group member s. On last report I heard it flew to the south Lullwater Rustic Arbor. No reports came since then.
Overshadowed by the YTWA,a good bird in its own right when found in Prospect, RED THROATED LOON appeared! Something about throats today in Prospect ,huh? Karen O' Hearn found the basic plumage loon on Prospect Lake where it lingered for me to see it by 330 PM.
In other spots,Greenwood Cemetery's Water spots held sway. Over Sylvan ,reports of NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOWS continue with a reported high of 13 birds. Over at Crescent Water LOUISIANA waterthrush,PINE & PALM WARBLERS checked in. A GREAT EGRET visited both water spots.
On my BBC walk, my best sighting - ICELAND GULL- continues at Bush Terminal park. The bright immature gull sat on the end of the broken pier that starts from the park entrance gate. A nearby GREAT CORMORANT perched on a piling. LESSER SCAUPs continue in the South cove, as COMMON RAVEN called out close by; Raven flew over us at Brooklyn Bridge Park pier One.

Sylvan Water vortex
A "vortex" ( that I'm emphasizing in a droll sense) of five
NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOWS occurred at the Sylvan Water in Greenwood Cemetery this afternoon. Sean Sime tweeted this report out on the What App Kings and Queens Bird alert. In a previous post Orrin Tilevitz also reported the spot being most active where else is quiet. Its a good number of this species in one spot particularly GWC.
It should warm up this weekend so it remains to be seen what birds come through. But I say given the gloomy weather week , the sun would be a welcomed sight and birds egged on by the warmth come through.
A late report from Kathy at 330 mentions the Upper Pool as active with BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER, PINE & PALM WARBLERS , both KINGLET SPECIES , EASTERN PHOEBES and HERMIT THRUSH.
I spotted 39 NORTHERN SHOVELERS on Prospect Lake that still includes the two SNOW GEESE by West Island.

Greenwood Cemetery
Several pine warblers and a couple of palm warblers. Also, tree swallows, northern rough-winged swallows over the Sylvan Water. And I heard a towhee calling.
