Nighthawks over Prospect tonight

My annual visit to Prospect evening during late August targets a migratory species that comes out at dusk: Common Nighthawk.

So setting up my usual vantage at Nethermead triangle, I sat down at 630 to watch the sky. A full hour ( almost) passes before I spotted the first nighthawk at 7:22 pm coming in from the west skirting Lookout Hills north slope. I got on it and saw immediately two birds. Both flew over the southern boundary of Quaker Cemetery before reversing course, heading towards Lookout. At this point, they joined two more as I see all four in my bins, the small flock heading due south and gone. They were the only night hawks I saw all evening as darkness descended. No lingering for the hurry up birds

Well, better than nothing.

"The edge of the sea is a strange and beautiful place...To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.

The brooklyn Bird Club likely will have its annual event MOnday ( to be confirmed base on wind direction)

but tonight also for anyone venturing under hot temps might want to check it out..I might  be at the Nethermead triangle to see for myself on the west wind.

Cuckoo

I don't have time to bird watch given my work hours and busy schedule in Prospect; so it was a nice moment this morning seeing a cuckoo.

The Maryland Monument was where a juvenile Yellow billed cuckoo perched at the top of the tree in front, where thanks to Tripper and Caleb , I enjoyed what precious moments I get. Much obliged to Tripper giving good instructions the cuckoos location.

The switchback ive been repairing lately has been a hotspot the past week. Today I presumes afternoon Jeremy refound the hybrid golden winged/ blue winged warbler. It may be a female Lawrence's according to jeremy. This bird was found yesterday by terrace bridge path, moving onward to switchback.

Wished I had free time.. Hohum

In Memoriam Jerry Layton 1941-2024

My oldest birding friend along with Paul Keim on the same day at decrepit Upper Pool where all three of us " strangers" then watched a Sora Rail roughly 45 years ago. We affectionately called our meeting " the sora connection" 🤗

So many memories and stories be it in prospect park, on birding trips or butterflies galore, and especially on overnight club weekends , Jerry Layton was one of a kind, always respectful and generous with his knowledge of the natural world.

He had been ill for a long time, suffered much and therefore is now at peace.

Journey on Good Friend! RIP

Perseids after midnight into Monday morning

SUNDAY, AUGUST 11

■ It's peak Perseid meteor night! And maybe the first of two. The actual peak of the shower is supposed to be from about 13h to 16h UT on the 12th, which is 9 a.m. to noon on the 12th Eastern Daylight Time; 6 to 9 a.m. Pacific Daylight time. That's not long after the ideal Perseid meteor-watching hours before dawn. But who knows, the next night could be just as good or nearly so.

In early evening the meteors will be few, but those that do appear will be Earth-grazers skimming far across the top of the atmosphere. As the hours pass and the shower's radiant (in northern Perseus near Cassiopeia) rises higher in the northeast, the meteors will become shorter and more numerous. The first-quarter Moon sets around 11 p.m. daylight-saving time, leaving the sky nicely dark. The shower's radiant continues to gain altitude until dawn puts an end to the show.

By 11 p.m. daylight-saving time Perseus is climbing up the northeastern sky. And the shower's radiant point, next the pointy hat on the Perseus stick figure and below Cassiopeia, is already high enough for the shower to be a little more than half as active as it will be when the radiant is much higher just before dawn. That's for an observer near 40° north latitude. For observers farther south Perseid rates all night will be a bit less, especially during the evening.
Sky & Telescope
Layer up warmly even if the day was hot; remember about radiational cooling late at night under an open clear sky! A sleeping bag makes good mosquito armor, and use DEET on whatever parts of you remain exposed.
