Brooklyn bird club presentation Monday evening 11/18

Join us as we present Adam Welz, author of The End of Eden: Wild Nature in the Age of Climate Breakdown (Bloomsbury, 2023)

Monday, November 18th at Powerhouse Arts
322 Third Avenue, Brooklyn
Time: 6:30 - 8:00 PM

Welz will talk about why he wrote his book THE END OF EDEN: WILD NATURE IN THE AGE OF CLIMATE BREAKDOWN and share stories from it. He'll focus on birds; how species from around the world are reacting to climate change and how scientists understand that radical changes now underway. He'll engage in discussion with the audience, exploring ways to save species from extinction in this era of unprecedented change.

Biography:

Adam Welz is a South African environmental writer and consultant, currently based in Cape Town, South Africa. According to The New York Times, THE END OF EDEN: WILD NATURE IN THE AGE OF CLIMATE BREAKDOWN, is "a disturbing and important book." Adams' work focuses on saving species from extinction; how we do it, how we pay for it, and how we think about it -- especially in urban environments and in the context of climate change. He's also an experienced birder and could often be found in Prospect Park during the years that he lived in Brooklyn.

Excerpts from reviews:

"The world is not ours alone, and it's not only humans who suffer from our warping and degrading of it. Everything is changing now-a global transformation of horrible majesty. In his exquisite meditation, Adam Welz shows us how to see it-and feel it- in full." ―David Wallace-Wells, author of THE UNINHABITABLE EARTH

"Climate change, Adam Welz shows, is already pushing many creatures toward oblivion, and its impacts are only going to grow. The End of Eden is at once an elegy and an exhortation-a plea to save what's left of the Earth's magnificent diversity." ―Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of UNDER A WHITE SKY

Books will be available at the event and Adam will be happy to sign copies.

Prospect ducks

Ducks are in and its a great time now to relish these birds, winter icons that are enjoyable to watch.

Prospect park waterways invite the observer to seek out the good birds mingling among the common ducks. And so I was able to find two drake Ring necked ducks by three sister islands with a nearby hen bufflehead hiding within a ruddy duck flock. Gadwalls- three total were found in the lake middle, assuming they're not the same at lull water cove.

Within three sisters I observed 5 wood ducks. It was this species that highlighted the day. Because at Lull water cove there was a total of 32! The day total became 37 woodies,a high enough number to get flagged on my ebird report. Such a spectacular sighting at the cove.

Yep ill be looking forward to the ducks of winter. 🐢

Preliminary Bullock's Oriole in Prospect yesterday

The yellowy Oriole was spotted in the Sparrowbowl (dip between the tennis and picnic houses) perched during yesterday BBC walk in memory of Lenore. An Ash-throated flycatcher was seen and this Oriole that experience d group members calling it a Bullock's ( earlier another birder reported it) here below are photos .zoom in. Bullock's compares to Baltimore are yellow heads and faces, pale mandibles, light gray back and wings, yellow ending breast middle. The wingbars might be an issue on this bird but there could be variations with plumages.

Pending Bullock's ,photos taken by Kellie Q.

More good bird reports

It turns out Saturday had more to offer thanks to a good wind. Here's the brief summary of prospect birds plus the greenwood update

Near the peninsula/ well drive sumacs which harbored the yellow billed cuckoo eating lanternflies, an Orange crowned warbler was spotted on the slope behind the well drive three containers.

Another Rusty Blackbird reported at Upper Pool back shore, a gorgeous specimen mentioned by LE.

A number of late Blue headed vireos in the park is noted.

In the Sparrowbowl west of picnic house, a cooperative Vesper Sparrow was spotted by FW, the bird in open ground in that high grass area.

The Greenwood Cemetery juvenile Red headed Woodpecker continues to stick within Battle Hill area concentrating at Battle and Hemlock ave intersection.

Hi Peter,
Thank you for leading a wonderful walk and tribute to Lenore's memory.

Here's my list. Let me know if you need any more info. I hope it is ok that I'm sending it as a pdf. That's how my software works. Note that I included the Merlin which only you and I saw before the start of the walk.

Not sure about the Bullock's vs Baltimore. Perhaps you can clarify. I saw the photos on eBird of the Bullock's at Stillwell and that one is a mature adult male.

Saturdays offerings in Prospect

Today's beautiful fall day offered the best of everything .Two club walks commenced one a memorial the other the first Saturday revealed some good birds.

On Lenore Swenson's memorial walk, starting from 9th Street, hot paydirt at the Sparrow bowl with a Myarchius genus flycatcher later identified as an Ash-throated flycatcher by experienced birders in the group. Also great was a Baltimore Oriole immature or female. A photo taken was asked for further review. The latter popped up within the sparrow bowl west of the Picnic House, along the tree line above abundant sparrows.Wood ducks in Upper Pool,Peregrine Falcon perched at a Long Meadow tree , and Merlin perched on an antenna near 9th Street spices the list.

Meanwhile the first Saturday BBC walk had some stuff of its own. Reported at Lullwater cove north, Rusty Blackbird,Wilson's Warbler ,Gadwalls and Greenwinged Teal entertained those birders. Later ,at Wellhouse drive by the sumac Grove on peninsula base, a Yellow billed cuckoo I put in an appearance.

From the Xmas count compiler Mark your calendars December 14th

Dear Brooklyn Bird Club member,

The annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is the nation's longest-running community science bird project, where birders across the continent conduct a bird census that helps Audubon and other organizations assess the health of bird populations and guide conservation actions. This year's count will be held Saturday, December 14th, 2024.

https://www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count

The Brooklyn CBC count circle is made up from 12 different count sectors that includes parks, cemeteries, and significant coastline on the bay and the ocean, and there is a team for all skill and commitment levels. Grab your binoculars and come out and join us.

Please contact the Teams Organizer, Bobbi Manian

roberta.manian@gmail.com to join a team.  The cut-off for team registration is December 11th.

Compilation Dinner: Pot-luck dinner and a live compilation of the day's sightings will be held for participants at the Prospect Park Boathouse.

Note: Some teams begin at 7:30 or earlier. Plan for 4-8 hours of birding. Rain or shine.
