It's not often to see lots of Common Mergansers even though it's only 8 compared to other outlier locations, but heck for prospect it's grand.
A lovely winter day spurred me on to go out in the afternoon to prospect. Besides it was too late to go anywhere far so prospect had to do after morning tasks. With lots of snow on the ground and the lake 95% frozen, it was a good opportunity to see the lingering Common Mergansers. I saw eight..That's a good , erg ....a very good number. And remarkably they're all drakes! An unusual sight yet a great view within the only open water next to Three Sisters Islands east side.
Another notable observation I had was a Red tailed Hawk eating gull on the lakes middle, minding its business. Good.We need gull population reduction anyway.
