a late afternoon Ambergill gathering
A bunch of us - me,Kathy,Karen,Dan,Kena,later Jennifer,Linda - watched at some point species coming into the water.WARBLING VIREO,YELLOW WARBLER,BLACK THROATED BLUE WARBLER,NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH,EASTERN KINGBIRD were some special ones.
Just 20 minute's earlier, Linda Evans spotted a WORM EATING WARBLER while we were with her. On the up slope in the Ravine, the pretty warbler moved along the ground before flying low to dead leaves that attracts this species looking for insects. A little more walking down the ravine path, again Linda good spotting nailed us a male RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRD. Me and Kathy Toomey were lucky birders.

I took my friend from Ecuador, Juan Carlos Calvachi for a short walk around the Park. We started at the Vale, where a Orchard Oriole followed by a Scarlet Tanager. From here to the Midwood, and the best was a Worm-eating Warbler. Also here BT Blue, Myrtle & Black-and-white Warblers.
At the pools, we saw Purple Finch, Great Crested Flycatcher, Blue-headed & Warbling Vireos.
My friend Juan Carlos is from Ecuador, visiting the Big Apple. And today Prospect Park will a place to remember, he got 6 lifers!!!

Park is Hot enough for shorebirds
A balmy hot day brought forth a rare combination of shorebirds regarding the number of species, not
seen in awhile in Prospect Park which lacks mudflats. Along with that rare occurrence,
another rare warbler, though already seen in Prospect earlier this spring appeared.
Keir Randall reported a trio of shorebirds on Music Island, the newly created island by the Lakeshore Rink. A WILSON'S SNIPE, with SOLITARY & SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were on this island that has an exposed shoreline , attractive to shorebirds. I went at lunchtime, but saw only two SPOTTED SANDPIPERS.
On my lunch hour, I spotted an adult RUSTY BLACKBIRD in the Ambergill Creek
after investigating a reported Prothonotary Warbler possibility from a source who texted me. I didn't find the bird until I received another text from a good birder I know midafternnon. Nathan Scholtens reported the PROTHONOTARY WARBLER in the Ambergill Creek; later it moved towards the Lower Pool , away from the Ravine.This is the third Prothonotary for Prospect's spring;seems like the park has a penchant for the species.

About 100 feet south of the Little Rock Arch at Ambergill falls, along the Ravine Creek,a fine looking male AMERICAN REDSTART was joined in order of my observation: MAGNOLIA, NORTHERN PARULA, and a resting female BLUE WINGED WARBLER. All the birds, especially the spectacular looking Magnolia were below me, so no " "warbleneck " affliction there for me.

Earlybird morning hour 6-7 am
Before getting to work at 7, there was not much diverse action. The YELLOW RUMP WARBLERS still rule !
Lookout Hill though as I passed thru quickly did have two interesting birds. On the middle slope between Butterfly and Summit meadows, a low female ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAK popped out. Above much higher the GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER flew into the meadow oak.
I did not see any different warbler warblers but like yesterday the other warblers were late risers. Its a good day to get out and bird.

better than yesterday
This morning I arrived in Prospect Park 545 am. Yes, a crazy hour but the anticipation after the long wait was real. I wanted to get the birds. However in the first hour or so, nothing moved. Again the frustration began to set in. Then this dormancy began to slowly turned. After watching two raccoons duke it out on a oak limb,screeching crazily, it turned out later this giant red oak had the YELLOW THROATED VIREO and BLACK THROATED GREEN WARBLER, thanks to Rob Jett and Heydi Lopes giving me note. I had excellent low views. Before that sighting,I watched a flock of 8 female PURPLE FINCHES feed in a oak tree canopy, then followed by a cooperative GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER above Butterfly Meadow were my best sightings at that point.
But my spring icons are the warblers. Though as I mentioned before numbers were not great today, the quality came through.Thanks to help from bird song maestro Paul Keim, sharp eyed Rafael Campos and friends we saw the following quality or new warblers: BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER Butterfly meadow oak; CHESTNUT-SIDED,PRAIRIE & HOODED along Quaker Hill south slope; WORM EATING west Midwood horse trail thanks to Chris Elliot; NASHVILLE & TENNESSEE south of Tunnel Arch stairs thanks to Paul Keim' s incredible hearing; another HOODED heard by Paul , in north Payne Hill section. In all ,I counted 13 warblers personally, 16 by birders overall in Prospect Park. BLUEWINGED also was spotted by Chris at Tunnel Arch Stairs, the best pocket of birding today.
There were reported PINE SISKINS on Butterfly Meadow sweetgum trees ( RJett,HLopes).My group had later two ORCHARD ORIOLES at the Vale Cashmere with a BALTIMORE; the ORCHARDS were an adult female and a first year male.

A good day,better than nothing; let's hope May birding floodgates opened a bit and nature be generous with birds to come.

What a morning!!! In 24 hrs difference I went from 4 sps of warblers (yesterday) up to 11 this morning. Highlights:Hooded, Worm-eating; BT Blue & BT Green, Parula, Yellow, Northern Waterthrush, Prairie.
It was a very short distance walk. I started at GAP, went through the Vale, Midwood, and at Central Drive, across from the Nethermead, the first Hooded Warbler was seen. And out of nowhere, birders started to appear. After this point, I joined forces with P. Dorosh and his flock, reversing more or less, my early part of the walk.

Today I led a small group of birders from the Saw Mill River Audubon chapter (Chappaqua, NY). But the expectations to see a landfall of birds was stopped by the cold weather in the region. No too many species, and the downside, was seen only 4 sps of warblers. See list below.
