Prospect's fogged in birds

Fog conditions and rain , particularly a southern direction storm will pull in and entrap birds, offering good opportunities for bird diversity; but it can be difficult seeing and identifying birds way up.

This morning, I went out quite early. With only a half hour time to bird Lookout Hill on my way to work 7 am clock in, I could see birds in an active wave. Most stuff was way up in the canopy of trees. There was one warbler that intrigued me, 75 feet above the switchback trail . But with coffee cup and bag in my hand , terrible light and poor contrast under misty conditions, I couldn't make out a definite identification..I saw a thin line on the breast making me suspect Cerulean Warbler.

About an hour later, reality when Anne Murray found  and Adam Welz photogrpahed a male CERULEAN WARBLER by the Maryland Monument. Later Klemens Gasser also spotted the bird....Now I wonder if I should count it?  ( on my conscience. hmm, a dilemma)

This rare CERULEAN WARBLER led a warbler parade today, birds all trapped by the fog. Ed Crowne and Phil Payne reported 21 species warblers today. Other birders reported CAPE MAY WARBLER at the Rose Garden ( Rafael Campos) , and HOODED WARBLER (f) at the Vale Cashmere Zucker nature playground ( Monica Berger) .See Adam's picture on Keir 's list below. A terrific bird...I might have to try for this in Doodletown upstate.

Other good birds included some sparrows and Vireo. LINCOLNS SPARROW I found at the east base slope of Lookout Hill along the path  coming from Maryland Monument towards Nethermead. SAVANNAH are in force as well.Me and Kristin Costello watched a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO at the south end of Butterfly Meadow,

A male foraging relatively low in trees on north side of the Maryland Monument meadow. Distinctive shade of blue and breast band seen well. Sang a little. Not sure if it went up Lookout (we tried there) or perhaps towards Nethermead? Thanks to Anne M for finding and Adam for getting the word out quickly. Might have got a nice photo if a card had been in my camera... photo thanks to Adam:

Adam Welz

Wow. Crummy weather = huge numbers of birds. 5 vireo species. Warblers everywhere - hard to know where to look. I was standing just downslope of the Maryland Monument with Ann Murray when she said something about a warbler I was about to look at and *pow*, there it was, a male Cerulean. It flew off after maybe ten mins towards the Lullwater just after Keir rocked up to see it. Shortly after Ann saw a male Hooded, which I refound nearer the top of the hill. Keir spotted a Lincoln's Sparrow on the Butterfly Meadow, and I later had 3 Wilson's on the Peninsula, 2 of which were in the same tree. Good looks at Cape Mays and Blackburnians too. Unfortunately I have work but this looks to be an epic day so if you can get into the park, do it!

A couple photos from the Department of Substandard Record Photographs Department attached.

Cheers!

Adam
