May sixth peakless day

An unimpressive day by my account for this peak date, a day depleted of bird numbers. Obviously last night's storm had much impact. If it wasn't for a few good birds, birders might have gone back to bed.

I got in around 715 am and noted very little movement. I recorded only a Common Yellowthroat in the next hour. But my morning was salvaged by the appearance of a 1st winter BLUE GROSBEAK that alighted on the metal fence surrounding ARLEENS Pines at Butterfly meadows north end. Report of Yellow throated Vireo and Rose breasted GROSBEAK,and in the air a flyover Peregrine Falcon was all the rave .

The Brooklyn bird club walk came through then. Perhaps with the group's multiple and better eyes than mine, they fared better.

Meanwhile over at Greenwood cemetery, Blue GROSBEAK also surfaced. Recorded by Rob Jett,it was on the list that included a male SUMMER TANAGER,the latter in the Dellwater area.

A BANK SWALLOW joined the Barn swallow flock in Prospect Lake. I watched it in the southwest section.

Peter:

Here is the list of the birds recorded today on the BBC walk.  We really had a great time.  By the time we started, around 24 birdwatchers were present.  By 1220 hrs, I called for go home.

Our 2 best ones were a male Hooded Warbler, seen behind the Upper Pool.  Later we had the tweet of the Cerulean observed in the early hours at Lookout Hill, spotted by Ed Crowne.  Later Ed joined us, and we were very lucky, thanks to Ed, to relocated this beautiful male warbler.  All the participants at this point, saw it, and heard his voice.

Attached are some pics taken of the participants looking at the CEWA.

Have a great day:

Cerulean Warbler continues

CERULEAN WARBLER continued its Lookout Hill run, a stay over sticking to the perimeter of western Butterfly Meadow.  Another day's highlight was HOODED WARBLER , preferring the Upper Pool back slope and few more good birds to tell.

Joshua Malbin reported the lingering CERULEAN this morning at 722 am. The Thursday Brooklyn Bird Club walk benefited its good luck seeing the Cerulean as well. At last report, leader Rafael Campos  and company said the bird was along the Northwest stairs leading down from Butterfly, near the first set of steps, At 150, Dennis Hrehowsik tweeted out the rare warbler was singing and seen well at the northwest corner of summit Upper meadow.

Earlier , Adam Nasbian mentioned to me at Cleft Ridge Span he had the HOODED WARBLER at the back slope of Upper Pool, just east of Falkill Falls.

In other news, a BALD EAGLE flyover treat Richard Payne to its appearance over the Nethermerad.WOOD PEWEE at Boulder Bridge, WORM EATING WARBLER  at the Vale of Cashmere and LINCOLNS SPARROW  behind the Center Drive Midwood shipping containers were other notables to pursue today.

Last, Eni and Vinny mention the richness of the enclosed West Woods just north of the Picnic House. It had yesterday SCARLET TANAGER, ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAKS & GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER  for good sightings.

The best Sunday walk of the year!!!!!

Looks like the peak migration is upon us!!  Lets get out there and find some migrants.

The weather  calls for clouds but that will not dampen my spirits.  We can hunt for your favorite warbler.

Remember the 5 Boro Bike Tour is on Sunday also.  It may cause traffic for your trip back and forth.

Hope to see you.  Bring your binoculars.

 Hi Peter:

Today was a good day, I saw 12 species of warblers.  The best for me was a Tennessee Warbler found first by K Tomey.  Other good one was a single male Blackpoll near Boulder Bridge.

While we were passing by the Lower Pool we saw 1 Red-tailed Hawk eating a Chipmunk.  Photos attached.

Brooklyn is great birding!!

Good warblers on the Big Hill

For a mostly inactive day, a few good warblers created the highlights on the big Hill called Lookout Hill. There was one other interesting birding spots with scattered reports of other quality warblers to mention.

Late morning, Ed Crowne heard and found CERULEAN WARBLER somewhere along the south slope of Lookout Hill. Specific location wasn't noted but anyone with knowledge of this treetop warbler's call should know the bird's location. The Cerulean hung out with a mixed flock that included also WORM-EATING WARBLER. Later, Sean Sime sent out a note that besides Cerulean, a YELLOW THROATED WARBLER was also found , specific location not noted but in the area of the Cerulean Warbler.

Other warblers made the quality list. BLACKBURNIAN and CAPE MAY WARBLERS reported by Adam Nasbian , at Ambergill Creek and Ricks Place respectively. WILSON'S,BLUE WINGED & PRAIRIE WARBLERS traveled along Center Drive woodlands adjacent to the bridle trail , according to Mike Yuan; Kathy Toomey added TENNESSEE WARBLER  at this location just before the slope path to Falkill Falls. I was happy seeing in midafternoon WORM EATING WARBLER in the Vale Cashmere Pools midsection cherry tree. I don't know how I saw it, looking at leaf movement my cue.

Along with Mike Yuans' list , a YELLOW BILLED CUCKOO was seen at the Lookout Hill switchback trail that was full of birdsong.

Marvin Baptiste I found out had a flyover BALD EAGLE over the Lakeside Rink this afternoon.

Slower day

A slower day by accounts but some activity that included two notables.

The first notable is HOODED WARBLER seen on the slope between the Vale Cashmere and the Rose Garden , found by Paige Linden Brams. The Brooklyn BIrd Club group walk was able to get on the bird.

Also notable is YELLOW THROATED VIREO, an uncommon species found in migration in city parks. That bird was spotted in the Ravine along the path from Rocky Pass towards the Esdale Bridge, spotted on the BBC walk.

Here and there, warblers were seen, common species that no doubt were recorded by the Club. I await the report.

Early SWAINSON'S THRUSHES and Late SHARPSHINNED HAWK hit their stride today as well.

Hi Peter! Super congrats on your great niece!!! Fallkill pool, falls, and upper pool were bird beaches this afternoon-- I was there 2ish for 20 mins. and over an hour after 3:30. Lots of great birds including Worm Eating ( 1) Blue winged (1), No.Parula, Yellow, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Yellow Rumped, Prarie, Black and White, Redstart, Waterthrush(too far away to call lowa or nowa), and Oven plus Balt. Oriole, a pair of Indigo buntings (together) and at least 3 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (also together). I guess everyone wanted to get cooled off. Craziest was this rabbit inside the ravine fence --area where the Upper Pool path meets the path to the Center St. It looked healthy-- are there native rabbits in the park or is this a drop off? It seemed only slightly afraid of us humans.
Best wishes again on being a great uncle. Super cool! Hope to see you in the park soon.
Best,
Michael

Wormeat (WEWA) FALKILL FALLS ( empties into upper pool )

patience at the Esdale bridge

After work I decided to do a little sit at the Esdale Bridge. My hope was to see those early warblers Shane saw.Instead I get a nice start of warblers for my spring list . A little patience goes a long way.

An hour watching and waiting looking at the bird pool on the south side of the bridge did provide nice birds. Heading the WARBLER array, an early BLACKPOLL WARBLER bathe in the running water. That was the precursor to a welcomed PRAIRIE WARBLER that landed on the rock farther back. Other bathing warblers: NORTHERN PARULA,YELLOW,YELLOW RUMPED,BLACK AND WHITE  & NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.

The WARBLERS had company. I saw also WARBLING VIREO,RUBY CROWNED KINGLET,CEDAR WAXWING ( that kept chasing away the Yellow WARBLER) ànd RED WINGED BLACKBIRD.

So a good start to begin May birding in my " catchup" to spring warblers.

They're in the 'Hood

HOODED WARBLERS descended in a few Prospect park "neighborhoods" a total of 4 sightings reports. Besides that warbler species, a few other made their encroachment as well.

First report of HOODED WARBLER came first from Matt Beck. He reported one at the Terrace Bridge, along the west Lullwater. Then an hour or so later, I ran into Linda Ewing; she reported two separate reports, one at north Midwood, by the Y fork paths, and the other just below Ricks Place at the Midwood border. Then at lunch time, standing by Esdale Bridge was Shane Blodgett, who reported HOODED WARBLER at the Ambergill Creek. A good showing today of this species.

Meanwhile at Ambergill Creek, Shane showed me pictures of two quality warblers in terms of their colorful plumages BLACK THROATED GREEN and BLACKBURNIAN  that came down to the water. The Blackburnian flamed throat was outstanding.

Other warblers were reported as well. CAPE MAY WARBLER at Lamppost 249 Well Drive ( Karen O'Hearn); WORM-EATING at west side Quaker Cemetery  ( Richard Payne, Karen) and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH  at both Ambergill creek and Lower Pool back gate.

A YELLOW BILLEE CUCKOO popped in as well, appearing at west side Quaker Cemetery slope, as reported by Ricahrd and Karen.

Apparently Blue Grosbeak heard I was coming so it took off as no reports of it today.I did see GREEN HERON at the Upper Pool Island. and that's good enough for my lunch hour.

If I missed anything, blame it still on Turbulent jet lag.....
