Prospect lists ; afternoon reports; Blue bird pic

The mid afternoon search for the Red-headed Woodpecker proved in vain at the site north of the Picnic House. Despite a search by myself and Klemens of the general area, no sign of the rare bird. It moves around obviously. The best way for a sighting is to  scour the oaks around the Picnic House especially the broken ones where the bird stores acorns if its intention is to stick around later into fall.

Of keen interest to me  though is the Upper Pool's duck diversity. First it was a handful of NORTHERN SHOVELERs, then a pair of GADWALLs, then RUDDY , and on the shoreline at the isthmus, a pair of WOOD DUCKS. Throw in the mallards, we have 5 species duck in the small pond  nowhere equal to the Lake.

A number of JUNCOS , some WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS on the Nethermead and an adult SHARP-SHINNED HAWK perched on the Linden by the Peninsula Ginkgoes  in the confounded early darkness now was the best to see on my way home. Not ready for that early darkness , there is a surrender to looking for stuff in dark marshes now.

From Sandy Paci :

Hi Peter,

I did not really do a comprehensive walk through the park today do I am sure I
missed any species. I wanted to see the Red Headed Woodpecker and thanks to your
text, I got it.

A nice additional surprise were the Eastern Bluebirds in several spots. First of
the season for me.

*Rare in Brooklyn, especially this late. **Accidental in Prospect Park.
Calling flyby over Terrace Bridge, heading towards Nethermead (kind of cutting through the path between Lookout and the Lullwater). First picked out by its typical flight call (which I've heard A LOT elsehwere over the last couple of months) and then heard more and seen well, pretty close and low. Very strange and unexpected. Called Sean who was in that direction, but he had just left the park.
My first for Prospect Park, and only ~5th record in the park's history.
4
Ring-billed Gull
12
Herring Gull (American)
3
Larus sp.
25
Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon)
5
Mourning Dove
1

1
Red-headed Woodpecker
*Rare.
Nice looking fresh juvenile continuing (first found yesterday) at the Picnic House. Caching acorns. Maybe it'll stay a while. This was the impetus for my walk through the park. Brooklyn Lifer.
4
Red-bellied Woodpecker
2
Downy Woodpecker
15
Blue Jay
3
Winter Wren
Above Nethermead Arches, calling from Lookout between Nethermead and Maryland Monument, and seen briefly at the shipping container at the south slope of Lookout (the latter bird got followed into the vegetation by a feral cat that looks like one I've seen at this location previously).
1
Carolina Wren
Heard only.
7
Golden-crowned Kinglet
15
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Possibly an under-count.
11
Eastern Bluebird
Good count (possibly my personal highest in the Park).
5 on Long Meadow (at least 2 near Picnic House, 3 more farther to the south, adjacent the middle of the Pools), 5 low calling southbound flyovers over Nethermead, 1 perched on the south slope of Lookout, between J249 and the Wellhouse.
42
Hermit Thrush
*Fairly high count given the not huge expenditure of effort.
Ubiquitous throughout and counted fairly accurately by ones.
