SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 27:

Brooklyn Bridge Park is having a "Bird Blitz" this Sunday from 8 AM for a few hours and meets at the Pier 1 entrance at Old Fulton and Furman Streets.  We will be covering these areas:

    Bioswale (near Jane's Carrousel) in Empire Fulton Ferry Park
    West and East meadows (near St. Anne's Warehouse) in Empire Fulton Ferry Park
    Path on top of Harbor View Lawn in Pier 1
    Wetlands area in Pier 1
    Berm between Pier 3/4
    Exploratory Marsh in Pier 6
    Wild flower field in Pier 6 (maybe, if access is permitted)

Quackers on the way

The dwindling days of summer and its neotropical bird migration will soon give way to sparrows and ducks. Cool seasons spur on the ducks and Prospect Lake is a good place for the local birders to check away.

Early this morning,Steve Nanz texted me that he had teal on the lake. But being distant for him,it was hard to check off the species with the back light. After my workday ended, I found one teal. A hen or immature GREEN-WINGED TEAL glided within the western sector of the lake,along with newly arrived 5 NORTHERN SHOVELERS. Early this weekend ,RUDDY DUCKS were reported.

Summary , GWC continues its hot spell

Following up yesterdays Lark Sparrows, Greenwood Cemetery continues its hot streak with a report of CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. Seen at a pipe drip , the rare sparrow was at the Dellwater pond , closest to the Crescent water.Observers were Kathy Toomey and Sandy Paci.

Meanwhile, the fall continues to be generous with PHILADELPHIA VIREO sightings. one seen at the Butterfly Meadow south end in Prospect Park.Observer was Rob Bate.8 species warblers according to Rob, mostly small pockets.

LARK SPARROWS in GWC

Funny a day difference makes, based on timing and luck.Yesterday I birded Greenwood Cemetery with Chris Laskowski and we saw minimal action. Today its likely the same little bird action only some very good rarities show up.

Dennis Hrehowsik reported this late afternoon 2 LARK SPARROWS  at the new mausoleum just northwest of the Crescent Water , access via Southwood Ave. I was there at that spot yesterday. :-( .

Also reported at Dellwater ,Crescents neighboring pond, two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS tweeted by Dennis.Earlier, Joshua Malbin saw an immature flyover BALD EAGLE.

Oh well, I needed my rest today..

Ten birders met at the pergola on a warm morning where Vireos were the highlight of the day. Two Philly V, one on breeze and one on butterfly. Surprise of the day was a yellow throated vireo on the north side of butterfly. I'm sure I missed a few but A fun day with 53+ species. Saturday group is really starting to bird well as a team.

warm,slow,& hazy

Heavy haze could be seen from Greenwood Cemetery's high ridge ,indicating a warm and slow day for birding. A few good reports though from my outdoor walk and separately Dennis Hrehowsik BBC walk were the best of it for the morning.

First thing g I saw as I entered past  the Greenwood Ave park entrance ,two COMMON NIGHTHAWKS feeding low in circles over West Island. Later on closer look, it was three nighthawks. Afterwards, along with Chris Laskowski we didn't see anything significant in the noisy park or dead quiet Greenwood cemetery.It was a short birding morning,though I'm not complaining after the taxing workweek for me following a tiring Cape May mini vacation.

Dennis reported early good birds.Two PHILADELPHIA VIREOs raised the bar, one seen at Terrace Bridge east end above the green containers; the other bird observed at Butterfly Meadow with uncommon YELLOW THROATED VIREO,two very good video sightings for a slow day. The usual walk list should be forthcoming.

Marine Park, Brooklyn Marine Park Trail Restoration and Community Engagement Project The Natural Areas Conservancy and The Nature Conservancy invite you to attend a meeting Monday, September 21 to discuss trail restoration opportunities in Marine Park, Brooklyn’s largest park. We are working with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and in partnership with the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy. The meeting will be at P.S. 277, 2529 Gerritsen Avenue, Brooklyn, from 7 to 8:30 pm. Project goals include making the park trails easier to navigate and better conserving its natural history. To improve park user’s experience in the maritime forest (one of only two in New York City) along the park’s western edge, we are planning to establish a marked loop trail. Most of the new trail will consist of existing paths, and some parts will be restored to be natural habitats. Research from the Natural Areas Conservancy’s recent biodiversity study of New York City’s parks will be used to guide this ecological restoration.
