Our esteemed guest Mr LongTailed Duck looks like it took heed of the incoming storm and took off. While i had a few minutes from work time , I scanned the lake and didnt see the LT Duck anywhere. Even if it hunkered in the reeds, it would have stuck out given its striking plumage.

As compensation, I did see a mixed pair of GADWALL off the southeast end of the Peninsula thumb. RUDDY DUCK and NORTHERN SHOVELER continue to be the dominant lake species while a DOUBLE RESTED CORMORANT looked lonely sitting on the red buoy by the Peninsula rustic shelter.

At the "hammerhead" east cove ( facing Three Sisters Islands), there was a darkish sparrow like bird I flushed from the shore edge and it flew into a small phragmite patch . It stayed in there not offering me any good looks, a furtive little creature. I presumed it most likely was a Swamp Sparrow. ( I hope!). Having no patience with the pelting ice cold rain and wet gloves I took off.

A looooonnng time for that duck!

The first reappearance of LONG TAILED DUCK on Prospect Lake in 64 years was a long time coming.And what a spectacular find that I hardly believed my eyes when I spotted it at the West shore of Duck Island in southeastern Prospect Lake.

Moments before my discovery I was telling Karen O' hearn during late fall into winter,one needs to check the Lake everyday to hope finding a rare species.How prophetic I was when just a mere 15 minutes later, I did a double take initially from the Three sisters area and I got closer with my scope to confirm the species sitting calmly on the water. A gorgeous Drake Long tailed Duck right there! It cooperated well giving Karen a good opportunity to photographed it.

After watching the duck for awhile,we proceeded for the Lefrak rink greenroof.Up there along the path by the south chimney,Karen spotted 5he continuing ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER, feeding within an aster and bee balm Wildflower cluster.t

Both of us continued an uneventful circuit of the lake and stopped at the west shore.In my scope i found the now distant Long Tailed Duck but in my line of view there is a pair of hen HOODED MERGANSERS in the lake center. Later I read several other birders also saw the Long tailed in the later afternoon.

For those birders seeking this species on election day, the last reported location  was the east shore or along the side there of Greenwood cemetery Sylvan water on the west side border of the cemetery.
Please note only the main entrance on 5th Ave and also closer on 4th Ave and 39th St is open on weekdays.

lake buffie no laughing matter

A single hen BUFFLEHEAD enjoying the crisp sunny afternoon on Prospect Lake mingled with nearby Ruddy Ducks. Later I found also a late LAUGHING GULL with a small gull flock.The usual NORTHERN SHOVELERS were around but a small number for this time of year.

On  a different note,some late warblers were  reported today.The three are OVENBIRD,BLACK THROATED BLUE and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. See the birdtrax on the left sidebar.
