This morning Tom Stephenson led his usual walk fr the BBC. On a brief note , he reported a variety of warblers despite the rain, a good sign if you can hack the raindrops. Variety included PRAIRIE,BLACKBURNIAN, BLACKPOLL,WILSONS & CHESTNUT SIDED.
Swallows and flycatchers were also noted. NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED, BARN and a good bird CLIFF. For flycatchers, ACADIAN,LEAST & YELLOW BELLIED tweeted their song..
Then a report from Sean Sime at Lookout Hill's summit noted MOURNING WARBLER just past noon.
Two notable late afternoon flyovers occurred 21 minutes apart. At 422 Sean Sime watched an immature BALD EAGLE over Long Meadow.Then at 443 pm , Tripper Paul obsetvob a COMMON NIGHTHAWK above the Nethermead.

Flycatching before the rain
Today in Prospect before it started raining was more of a flycatcher morning.Reports of ACADIAN, ALDER and OLIVE SIDED dominated the few reports I read .
Starting off with the best flycatcher, two ACADIANS were noted. One singing bird sang on Lookout Hill's lower west slope opposite the Quaker Cemetery according to Joshua M./ Then by the same observer, another Acadian was found in the Midwood.
Then there was the continuing OLIVE SIDED FLYCATCHER. Again like the Acadian two birds reported. Joshua had one high up in a snag at the first Acadian spot, west slope Lookout Hill, Then Linda found one at Terrace Bridge .
Regarding warblers, not much to report here. Linda E had two BAY BREASTED WARBLERS down low at Terrace Bridge. Matt Beck happened on a lode at the Peninsula tip around 1030 . Those birds included BLACKBURNIAN, WILSON'S. BLACK THROATED GREEN YELLOW, BLACKPOLL and MAGNOLIA among his sightings.

Tuesday's toppers
These are one of those days where turning off my phone to focus on my work even as I worked in the park was necessary.Its a tough pill to swallow... But for the delight of other birders, its a top notched day for birding.
Topping the big bird report, there is a report of a flyover ANHINGA over the 3rd street Stone house in Park Slope. The Stone house holds exhibits of the Revolutionary War Battle of Brooklyn; so perhaps the Anhinga wanted to see that :). I hope to get more details on this great rarity if true.
prospect Lookout Hill held two termite hatch outs. One at the former goat pen, along the slope path from Maryland Monument ( per Karen O) ; then there was one the slope facing the Quaker Cemetery according to Ed Crowne.Chimney Swifts came down to the latter. There were multiple hatch outs of which I cannot pinpoint given lack of information.
Angie Co went birding this morning and found a few good birds.CANADA and BAY BREASTED WARBLERS were seen by West Island.Then she also found WHITE CROWNED SPARROW on Center Drive by the cemetery north corner at the bridle trail.
Joshua Malbin reported a BROADWINGED HAWK flying above Midwood.Joshua also reported a calling YELLOW BELLIED FLYCATCHER with its 'turee" call at Lookout Hill's summit.
Speaking of flycatchers, Mike Yuan spotted a lazy OLIVE SIDED FLY CATCHER in a snag on Lookout Hills east slope above the Switchback Trail.

High Noon-"less" birding
The warblers pulled a fast draw, after an early morning initial report of 21 species reported by Ryan on Lookout Hill.
Ryan G reported 21 species warblers birding from the Wellhouse up to the Lookout Hill summit. Included were BLACKBURNIAN, CAPE MAY, TENNESSEE AND BAY BREASTED. But when I arrived there on my lunch hour, nary a warbler I could spot. They all disappeared.
While up on the hill,Lenny G tweeted a CANADA WARBLER seen well at the Esdale Bridge. Since it was dead up on "boot hill", why not? It's a new year species for me. So on the quicken pace I go and I arrived at the Esdale Bridge where a few other birders were posted. Sam pointed out the CANADA flying back and forth across the creek right below the bridge's west side: gorgeous looks at a very close warbler. Then about 5 minutes later, Sam also pointed out a WILSON'S WARBLER on the south side of Esdale, perching upon various limbs where I was able to catch up with the fast bird and see it .So thanks to Sam for getting me two new warbler year species.

Post birdathon sunday
This chilly dreary day after Birdathon Saturday had few offerings except for MOURNING WARBLER . A personal walk I did had me exposed to raindrops but I was just happy getting out .
At Sylvan Water ,by the steep slope,a MOURNING WARBLER appeared. Daisy Lane tweeted out exactly where seen from Sylvan Ave and Oaken Bluff path. It eventually moved along the east slope of Syvlvan during mid-afternoon.
At Prospect Peninsula sumacs Grove,LINCOLN SPARROW is that spot's gem. Ed Crowne reported it this morning.
I ventured to the Peninsula in search of the Lincoln around noon. I might have flushed it near the asphalt road but it never showed.
Afterwards I searched the peninsula woods as rain felled heavier. I did record a NASHVILLE WARBLER,albeit too brief,AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and YELLOW RUMPED WARBLER.
An interesting observation for me occurred at Upper Pool. At least 5 NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOWS flew over the water against one BARN SWALLOW , obviously out matched!
Yesterday's birdathon results are still pending; as soon as Bobbi and crew tally the numbers,I'll post. Info was scant and I didn't summarize as obviously reticence ruled the day.

- Comments: "Seen at 11:15 on the west side of Breeze Hill in the dense undergrowth where the upper and lower paths meet on the east side of the bridge. Flew in from the direction of the Wellhouse into the undergrowth and disappeared into there. Slightly shiny full purplish/grayish hood was quickly noticeable and distinguishable from Yellowthroats"

Greetings, Peter
I counted 21 species of warblers during my 4.5 hour walk this morning. N. Parulas were the most numerous among warblers. Both species of cuckoo were present on Lookout. Plus tanagers, grosbeaks and thrushes distributed throughout the park.

In about 2 hours at Green-Wood this morning, the haul included 2 Wilson's, 2 Canadas, a few magnolias, a northern waterthrush, a couple of common yellowthroats, male and female redstarts, dozens of ovenbirds, and no yello-rumps. Also, a great crested flycatcher, as many as 6 spotted sandpipers, maybe 100 thrushes of various sorts (including at least one wood thrush), a warbling vireo, red-eyed vireos, a few pewees, a male and female scarlet tanagers. If you had to work today,well it's too bad . ( I did work so it hurts ).
From scattered reports today the total number of warblers in Prospect ranged between 15 to 20 species warblers. A Dawn Redwood tree below the Binnen Falls for example held 10 species in the early afternoon. Reports of BAY BREASTED, CANADA, BLACKBURNIAN, WILSONS,WORM EATING and so on filled the Prospect woods.
Other birds might have intrigued you as well. BLACK BILLED CUCKOO above the Maryland Monument stairs, lots of SCARLET TANAGERs and YELLOW THROATED VIREO are other notables.
Even other parks did well. Small patches like Brooklyn Bridge Park saw 14 species warblers.Owls Head Park saw HOODED WARBLER, BLACK BILLED CUCKOO and INDIGO BUNTING.
Sorry for this very brief report but I'm leaving work at my usual 330 hour before I need to get home quick.
Tomorrow its rain showers. Though it might put a damper on birding sometimes you can get fallouts as rain forcesdown incoming migrants .

It was a lot of fun (and a manageable size). 77 or 78 species and we ended around 1:30. There were pockets that were very birdy, but flycatchers, thrushes and cuckoos are absent and some of the late season migrants like Canada and Wilson's were not to be found.

Very excellent mixed night flight over Brooklyn right now. Up to 70 calls/minute: warblers, thrushes, shorebirds- the whole gamut. Needless to say it could be an interesting morning.
