Foggy birds, still they come in...BBC walk

Regardless of the weather conditions, if numbers don't mean anything to a birder, then settle in for decent quality and hopefully something to see under poor weather conditions that often impacts migration. This morning's BBC walk was delightful and satisfying with non warblers stealing the hi light.

My BBC walk , subbing in for Tom Stephenson , had some good birds we were happy to see ( anything). At the north end lawn of the Rose Garden ( Vale Cashmere) , a FIELD SPARROW would have been great if the only bird. But in the Midwood, a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER appeared, but even more fun to watch were a pair of WOOD DUCKS perched high up in a Tulip tree at the trail by the bridle trail. Also, it was good seeing the GRAY CATBIRD, LOUSIANA WATERTHRUSH in Ambergill, and last , my career bird.

That career bird was SCARLET TANAGER ( reported earlier by Keir). One of the two birds was a gorgeous male specimen, a bird half red at top, and pinkish below, the result of molting in becoming an adult. You just had to see it,a beautiful bird at the west /southwest slope seen from the summit meadow of Lookout Hill. With it in the same spot, we watched a cooperative EASTERN KINGBIRD.

Lookout Hill top for us BBC=ers also benefited from some warblers. Best among at Lookout' s summit,a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER in the sapling forest at top the steps. BLACK & WHITE, YRUMPS , PINEs accompanied the Chest nut sided. Earlier at GAP entrance, under eye straining contrast difficulties,I spotted a female AMERICAN REDSTART being chased by a BLUE HEADED VIREO.

Other good birds reported in this morning are worth mentions. INDIGO BUNTING at Terrace Bridge , and again at Butterfly Meadow; ORCHARD ORIOLE in Lullwater with GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER in Lullwater . VEERY was also reported. The Lullwater is the hot spot today given the reports. At my lunch hour, I spotted a small flock of CHIPPING SPARROWS under the pines south of the Bartel Pritchard park entrance.Of course, the BLUE WINGED TEAL is always a great treat.

More later
