After a high birding activity at the north end of the park very early this morning, very soon after 100 s of birds were seen taking off ,obviously after staging ,thereby leaving behind stragglers for my club walk.Best among them found by Sandy Paci was a BAY BREASTED WARBLER in the area before the Vale of Cashmere. With some ORCHARD ORIOLES as well as BALTIMORE--a load of them in a large flowered cherry overlooking the Zucker nature playground in Vale-- it was a bit of a struggle finding birds, though a WILSONS WARBLER was a good catch at the Terrace Bridge. We also had YELLOW THROATED VIREOs
Three SOLITARY SANDPIPERS on the Peninsula was good seeing reported by Tom Preston, then that's about it.
The end of the day didn't bring high activity but rather very good rarity, one I be lieve not seen since Prospect's 1980s.The best part ? Kathy Toomey who gave us the Virginia Rail last fall, did it again with This afternoons CLAPPER RAIL. ( Dennis helped ID it) The other irony? The location is the very same MAGICAL spot as last falls Virginia Rail and two Soras.Again thanks to Kathy for her second rail sighting. She's fast becoming quite a rail expert. ( Hat tip !) Hoping it sticks around, the rail was very tame and cooperative working the lake overflowed shore along that phragmite marsh.
Look for from across the Well house (closed off) down the Peninsula, the first phargmite patch with a bald cypress tree with a red pole (with hook used for rescue ladders),along the east shore of that small peninsula where the rail comes out in good views
Then another rarity reported end of day was KENTUCKY WARBLER reported in the southeast section of the MIDWOOD by Stanley Greenberg, before the bird flew off within the Mid wood.
Other noteworthy birds to look for: WHITE CROWNED SPARROWS at Vale Cashmere, andsouth of West Island , HOODED WARBLER in the Cashmere as well, high up NORTHERN HARRIER.WORM EATING WARBLER at Maryland Monument (jett, lopes,Randall) . Observers DougGochfeld ,Dale Dyer (HOWA)
