Prospect " What an off day !"

Last week, I asked my boss for an off day, required a weeks notice. I replied " Tuesday". I guess I hit the Coney Island tower bell..

For my tremendous luck, from 6 am to 530 pm, going slow on wobbly legs, I scored 21 species warblers, among them new year species on my way to The '30 club', the big star KENTUCKY WARBLER,CAPE MAY,BLUEWINGED,BLACKBURNIAN  for my list and a host of other more common species.
My warbler year list now stands at 27.Particular thanks by the way to Joshua Malbin for the Kentucky.Tweet works !

No doubt the big celebre is the KENTUCKY WARBLER.Multiple observers -including the BBC walk group led by Bobbi Manian--were treated to excellent views of the bird reported first by Joshua , on the back slope shore of the Upper Pool, just to the right of Falkill Falls lower fall, if one faces the pond. Reports continued to come into the afternoon, as this Kentucky stayed loyal to his domain.

Other warblers a such as WILSONS,BLUEWINGED were along the woods from Rocky Pass to the Esdale Bridge. The Ambergill continues to impress with warblers chasing insects, in close views.LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH with NORTHERNS was seen at this waterfall. it was fun watching PARULA ,B&W, MAGNOLIA ,and company here ,flying about, on and off at times. Enroute to the falls from Esdale, Simon found me a WORMEATING along the creek/ pool boundary. There were great looks and several birders benefited from tweets. mostly satisfying of the twitter tweets for me was Keir's CAPE MAY, that I eventually found in a exotic conifer in the middle of the Vale Cashmere Pool.Keir also had a high up TENNESSEE WARBLER at Tunnel Arch steps. But there's more.Other birders reported PROTHONOTARY WARBLER presenting itself at the shore south of Terrace Bridge until spotted again at Lily Pool's island. And as well HOODED WARBLER at Maryland Monument.
For anyone who is an early bird, check out Butterfly Meadow. Here, at 630 am, I watched at least 10 species warblers in the north pin oak.Klemens found for us YELLOW THROATED VIREO but we dipped on the LINCOLNS SPARROW in the meadow.

An awesome day all around.Check my list as I post it soon.

Other birds of note to watch for: BALD EAGLE high flyover at Lookout Hill; WHITE CROWNED SPARROW in the Vale..I will amend the post when I get the lists.

Results of Tuesday Brooklyn Bird Club walk

leading Bobbi Manian

We made a bee-line straight for the KentuckyWarbler  this morning.  We were moving so fast and with such purpose across the ballfields that all the offleash dogs gave us a wide berth ;-)

We had no trouble finding the Kentucky it was being staked out by many.  It took a while to get everyone in the group on it, as it kept popping around, but in the end everyone got satisfying looks.

i think we stopped counting Northern Waterthrushes.  Chris Laz had what we are 95% sure was a LOWA but we couldnt re-locate to confirm. But while we were looking he found a Brown Thrasher singing high up in a tree above Ambergill.

While the Tuesday walk usually sticks to the south side of the park, reports from the Vale enticed us up there.  Though we never saw the Cape May, we were treated to both orioles, Scarlet Tanagers, a hummingbird, and while we were following your advice (patience at middle bench) Doug G spotted a Broad-winged Hawk for the group.

The new mudflat at the lilly pond yielded Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers and a Green Heron.  While standing there, we got Keir's tweet that a Bald Eagle was flying north from the Nethermede.  We scanned the skies but couldn't locate it.

We saw both Green Heron nests, the Blue-Grey Gnatcatcher nest and many MODO and Robin nests.

best,
Bobbi
