Gateway Nat Park announcement

From: le'alani_schaumburg@nps.gov Sent: 8/8/2013 6:35:07 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time Subj: Gateway NRA Releases Draft General Management Plan and Highlights Jamaica Bay Greenway!
Jamaica Bay Greenway Supporters & Stakeholders,
I'm writing to call your attention to the release of Gateway National Recreation Area's Draft General Management Plan (GMP) and Environmental Impact Statement and the great victory for the Jamaica Bay Greenway as a highlighted component of Gateway's preferred vision for the park!
In the Draft GMP, Gateway has selected "Alternative B: Discovering Gateway" as the NPS Preferred Alternative, which "provides the widest range of activities and most recreation opportunities in dispersed locations throughout the park. New connections would be forged with park lands and communities adjacent and nearby Gateway...more convenient and affordable park access is developed through trail connections, bicycle infrastructure, public transit, and waterborne transportation." (Chapter 2, p. 77).
"The extensive network of trails would provide connections from adjacent parks and neighborhoods by tying into the Jamaica Bay Greenway" (p. 78)
"Desired Experience: physical and programmatic connections created to link Gateway sites, New York City parks and neighborhoods to Jamaica Bay" >>"Where Changes May Occur: Plumb Beach, Bergen Beach, Canarsie Pier, Pennsylvania Avenue & Fountain Avenue Parks, Spring Creek, Frank Charles Park, Hamilton Beach" (p.79)
As a stakeholder of the Jamaica Bay Greenway and Gateway NRA, I encourage you to take the time to download and read Gateway's Draft GMP, especially Chapter 2, where Alternative B for Jamaica Bay is described in detail (pages 77-90). If you wish to receive a printed copy, please call (718) 354-4568. Also, please participate in the public comment process and share your thoughts on the plan with Gateway. You can either provide comments electronically on the public comment website, or attend a public open house:
Tuesday, August 20, 4-8pm Ryan Visitor Center, FBF Tuesday, September 10 4-8pm Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
Thank you for being part of charting our course forward and helping to connect your communities to Jamaica Bay parks.
best, Le'alani
