Fw: Announcing the recipient of the 2022 Birdathon

Subject: Announcing the recipient of the 2022 Birdathon

Dear Members,

I am excited to announce that the recipient of the 2022 Birdathon, which takes place Saturday May 14th, will be the Green-wood Cemetery.  We will be raising funds for the planting of a bird-friendly native meadow along Magnolia Ave adjacent to Valley Water. This stretch of native grasses will reflect the character of those on the hillside behind the chapel, which has become a productive habitat for migrants. We are making this donation in memory of Janet Schumacher, a long time BBC member and editor of the Clapper Rail who passed away earlier this year. Janet loved birding Green-wood and we feel this will be a fitting tribute to her service. Though it was Janet's final wish that no plaque with her name be erected we would love for this area to be known as Janet's Meadow within our community. The planting will take place at the end of this summer and will be ready for birds next spring.

I would also like to announce another exciting development. In an unprecedented partnership with GWC, under our advisement their board has agreed to begin a new fund, the Green-wood Conservation fund. This fund will be in addition to the existing Green-wood Historic fund and give donors a voice in shaping the future of Green-wood Cemetery. Donations to the new Green-wood Conservation fund will be earmarked for bird-friendly projects and native plantings. Our birdathon pledges will be the inaugural donation to this new fund.

For information on how to participate, see our website here: http://brooklynbirdclub.org/event/2022-spring-birdathon/

Be well, have a great spring migration and give till it hurts,

Yours,

Dennis W Hrehowsik
President Brooklyn Bird Club

Bloodroot

On Lookout Hill, one of springs early ephemerals

Louisianas and Rusty

Louisiana Waterthrush was most prominent today at Greenwood Cemetery Water spots, namely Sylvan and Dellwaters, along the shore and the muddy patch respectively.

In prospect a "louie" was along the Binnen Creek and also another maybe ( if not the same) at Esdale Bridge Ambergill CReek

On a different bird, a Rusty Blackbird reported by Maureen was seen on the muflat leaf patch at the Lower Pool back path gate. I got there a wee bit late after running into Maureen again. Hopefully I'll see it after my work day ends.

- Comments: "*Mega rarity. First state record. At 10:45 we picked up this dark, long-winged raptor flying low-ish to the northwest away from us as we walked along the west edge of the Hill of Graves. Turkey Vulture was our first thought but its glide was fast and smooth with only a slight dihedral, and its long and broad wings and their angular shape were not right for TUVU. Also it was all black on top and not brownish. A second later a Red-tailed Hawk appeared and took several dives at it. They were about the same size. As the Zone-tailed banked and twisted to evade the red-tailed, its wingbeats smooth not swift, it showed pale flight feathers and pale wingtips with a dark trailing edge to the wings. Could make out a pale tail band. The head was small and black. The red-tail chased it to the north quickly out of sight. Moments later Marc saw a WhatsApp alert with Angela's photo of this same bird."

Senator Charles Schumer Secures
Record Breaking $18.91 Million for Jamaica Bay!
Stony Creek Marsh, Jamaica Bay, New York
The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy joins the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, the American Littoral Society and partners in congratulating and thanking U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, staff, and all federal partners, for their advocacy on behalf of the Jamaica Bay Stony Creek Marsh Restoration, and the entire Hudson Raritan Estuary Project, securing much needed design and construction funding for this important restoration project.

This latest batch of funding, secured in two major bipartisan pieces of legislation—the recently passed 2022 Omnibus, and the infrastructure bill—brought in $27.2 million to the Hudson Raritan Estuary Project, which includes other sites in the New York region, with $18.91 million directly for the Jamaica Bay Stony Creek Marsh Restoration project. This funding covers both the design phase and full federal construction costs.

Stony Creek Marsh is an important marsh island in Jamaica Bay that has been degraded and fragmented over time. Once completed, this project will restore over 50 acres of marsh in the bay, creating important habitat and helping clean our waterways, and will provide protection to local communities from extreme weather.
Senator Schumer, along with Senator Gillibrand, recently wrote a letter to the Office of Management and Budget calling for full federal funding to be allocated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to this project, and they came through! As a longtime friend of Jamaica Bay, Senator Schumer has always delivered for us, and now has secured funding for this vital restoration project.

This critical funding will support restoration of Jamaica Bay's important ecosystems and protect Southern Brooklyn and Southern Queens from extreme weather events. The Stony Creek Marsh restoration project builds on prior investments by the city, state, and federal government to restore and clean the bay – efforts first led by the coastal communities of Jamaica Bay and championed by Senator Schumer and other elected officials. Learn more about this historic level of infrastructure funding here.

The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy is dedicated to improving the 10,000 acres of public parkland throughout Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway peninsula for local residents and visitors alike. Thank you to our non-profit, corporate and governmental partners helping to fulfill our mission.

Please consider supporting our work with a donation today.

Brown Thrashers

Reported yesterday at Brooklyn bridge park pier 3 and today in greenwood cemetery.

Friday, April 1, 2022

Louisiana water thrush makes a grand entrance

Possibly up to four Louisiana water thrushes alighted unto Prospect Park today, appearing in several places.

The first report from Max E. mentiones the Binnen pool, at Nethermead's east margin. This is where I saw my lunchtime sighting after a long walk to the Esdale Bridge and back.I shouldn't have left my vehicle. On the last note with Esdale ,another LOWA was seen in Ambergill and Ravine.

The Vale of Cashmere and Midwood also saw LOWAs. Even Greenwood cemetery Dellwater had a LOWA.

So for an early bird, a grand entrance regarding numbers for a typically uncommon species makes news.

Those Common Mergansers continuing their presence on prospect
Lake is an astounding honor after two full months. Must be something about the water.
