Subject: Announcing the recipient of the 2022 Birdathon

Dear Members,

I am excited to announce that the recipient of the 2022 Birdathon, which takes place Saturday May 14th, will be the Green-wood Cemetery.  We will be raising funds for the planting of a bird-friendly native meadow along Magnolia Ave adjacent to Valley Water. This stretch of native grasses will reflect the character of those on the hillside behind the chapel, which has become a productive habitat for migrants. We are making this donation in memory of Janet Schumacher, a long time BBC member and editor of the Clapper Rail who passed away earlier this year. Janet loved birding Green-wood and we feel this will be a fitting tribute to her service. Though it was Janet's final wish that no plaque with her name be erected we would love for this area to be known as Janet's Meadow within our community. The planting will take place at the end of this summer and will be ready for birds next spring.

I would also like to announce another exciting development. In an unprecedented partnership with GWC, under our advisement their board has agreed to begin a new fund, the Green-wood Conservation fund. This fund will be in addition to the existing Green-wood Historic fund and give donors a voice in shaping the future of Green-wood Cemetery. Donations to the new Green-wood Conservation fund will be earmarked for bird-friendly projects and native plantings. Our birdathon pledges will be the inaugural donation to this new fund.

Be well, have a great spring migration and give till it hurts,

Yours,

Dennis W Hrehowsik
