The Great Backyard experience 17 Feb 2024 - Prospect Park--Prospect Lake - 16 species (+1 other taxa)

I would've felt guilty not submitting at least one Great Backyard count tally during the four day festival.So with great willpower after a hard work week, a few hours in Prospect would suffice. And personally it was a good one.

First scan from West Island netted me the usual waterfowl but Wood Duck I found turned out to be a highlight. I counted overall a dozen; Forrest who swung by said he counted 14! Then I saw to my left out in the lake middle a smallish dark backed Gull ; so  I headed over to the rustic shelter.

It turned out my hunch was right. The dark backed Gull was an adult non breeding Lesser Black Back Gull, seen bathing quite abit. Unfortunately it didn't stay long as a few birders came by motivated by my tweet. Eventually ,  I found the long staying hen Common Merganser. Speaking of Merganser, the handsome Hoodeds are frequenting the southwest shoreline,3 drakes and likewise 3 hens within 3 Sisters Islands.I witnessed interesting behavior with the hens: they were eating snow off a branch sticking out of the water!

Two Pied Billed Grebes mingled near the dwindling Northern Shoveler flock. Grebe's are usually uncommon in winter here on the lake.

After that ,my best sighting happened to be a flash. Taking a photo of a snow scene from Terrace Bridge, I spotted a low flying juvenile Bald Eagle heading towards the Rink. It must've come off the big hill. With the feeders unremarkably quiet- it's been like that all winter- and negative reports of the Rufous Hummingbird - hopefully it survived the storm-it was on ward home for me , feeling hungry and experiencing cold fingers.

At least I did my part being a citizen scientist for a few but fulfilling hours.🌨️❄️☃️🦆🦅

First spotted while head-tucked more or less in aspect of photo #2, when most easily located by blood-red legs. In winter, in the absence of Laughing Gulls, this dark coral red leg color is probably unique among gulls likely to be seen in our area; the most similar but much smaller species, Bonaparte's Gull, typically shows pale pink legs. Leg color is one of the easier ways to spot this gull in large groups of standing, resting gulls. Once this bird lifted its head the dull dark red bill was visible."

Rufous is a survivor!!

The Rufous hummingbird survived yesterdays storm giving hope for more birders to see it.

It favors a large honeysuckle bush next to a yew at the top of the hill directly above the hairpin turn of the descending south face Breeze Hill path. The honeysuckle flowers are its lifesaving nutrient.

- Comments: "Continuing even after the blizzard, which is perhaps not surprising from the only hummingbird species known to regularly breed in Alaska. In its favorite clump of honeysuckle next to the yew, just uphill from the hummingbird feeder. Not visible (and I don't think audible) on me and Josh M's first pass through, but when I returned I heard it within a minute or two, then quickly spotted it and snapped a few photos. No one seems to know where it goes, and/or how long it rests, when it's not being seen (perhaps especially in the afternoon), but it seems like it can be seen anywhere along this (lake) side of Breeze Hill in the mornings. Mega RUHU report

With multiple observers and so many reports here's the gist of it regarding Prospects Rufous Hummingbird.

If one continues down the descending path  at Terrace Bridge towards the Rink, flowering Honeysuckle Bushes is attracting this mega rarity-Kings county's first.Look for the bird about midslope but more likely near the hairpin turn at the bottom of the hill.

This morning I along with many others at the hairpin turn, observed the Hummer hanging around a large honeysuckle at the top of the slope. More Honeysuckle resides on a path above from the parking lot southeast access path if you don't find it or along the shoreline by the bollards. Good luck.

In other news, the winter long Orange crowned warbler was spotted at the rink's southeast area or in evergreens by there I presumed along the path to the greenroof. It had been frequenting habitat next to the Summerhouse Gazebo ( Duck island)

On the lake , the hen Common Merganser sticks around near Three Sisters while wood ducks hang out at Duck island and a Hooded Merganser by West island.
