- Comments: "Continuing bird found in the channel at the end of the 52nd street salt mines associating with a male American Wigeon. Although this bird is quite different from a female American Wigeon, I have to say, speaking honestly (RF notes), that I could well have overlooked it if I hadn't known to watch out for it. Kudos to Mike Yuan and Jeremy Thorp who originally found it. Bird has a much warmer head color than the grayer tones of female American Wigeon, and the forehead is almost completely vertical. These are both field marks for Eurasian. However, this bird also shows quite a bit of black at the base of the bill in mine and other photographs of what seem to be the same individual, and much of the literature has this as a field mark for American Wigeon. I don't know whether this black edging is within range for Eurasian, and certainly there are plenty of photographs online of female Eurasian Wigeon that show some black in this area, but Cox and Barry (http://www.azfo.org/gallery/EUWI_article_%20BirdingVol37No2.pdf) write "Note also the black line at the base of the bill, which is diagnostic for American Wigeon in any plumage." Sibley, in my Sibley V2 app indicates for female American a "narrow black border at gape not shown by Eurasian." So this aspect is confusing."
