Hi Peter-

17 participants enjoyed a gorgeous morning full of seeps, zeeps, and zips. Loads of birds around, many too quick to stay on as birds tend to be jumpy in the park early in the day. We chased the sunny spots, moving from the turtle pond on Pier 1 to the recent hotspot of the Quaking Aspens in the maze on Pier 3. Nice close looks at a Tennessee Warbler and a slightly early western Palm Warbler.

Chasing the light back at the Bridge Lawn on Pier 1, we noticed the Marine 1 helicopters at the lower Manhattan helipad, and tried to stake out a view of POTUS, but found out his schedule would have him arriving later. A Red breasted nuthatch tooting in the Vale was a nice treat.

Good variety with 36 species.

Mike

Hi Peter,

Angie, Sheila, and I co-facilitated Tuesday's "Friends' Walk" today. We had an excellent turnout and a good mix of birds: 12 warbler species, including 3 bay-breasted, a green-winged teal mixed in with wood ducks at the Lullwater Cove, and a yellow-billed cuckoo on the steps up from the Maryland Monument that was a lifer for some. For the second week in a row, we had an international visitor join us. The BBC is globally renowned!

An office shocker..

I was tending to my office desktop filling out the work sheet mid-afternoon when my coworker Oliver Martinez comes over to me to show a bird in his hand. I looked at it and after 5 seconds scrutiny, I had to say "holy crap!". 😆

The bird in Oliver's hand turned out to be a first winter Connecticut Warbler. Apparently it was in a stunned phase after hearing from Oliver the bird hit a parks truck windshield at the 9th Street garage. He picked it up wisely and bought it to our Picnic House office trailers.

After observing it i instructed Oliver to set the bird down in habitat behind our trailer . Hopefully it will shake off its accidental impact stupor and fly on. Fingers crossed .

Of all the birds,it turns out to be a rarity.

Lights out!

Hi Peter,
Well, it was very very quiet out there today. A great group of many new birders, but not a lot of birds. We did see a Tennessee Warbler and then, on the Peninsula, a very cooperative first yr female Bay-breasted. But the bird of the day might be a Pandora Sphinx Moth that we found at the park entrance.

Here's the list.
On to next week.

Philadelphia Vireo in prospect

On a brief note, a few sightings of Philly vireo to report.

One was seen on the dead ash tree on the perimeter of Butterfly meadow west side. It was reported later after noon in the same area under the big pin oak.

A second bird ( maybe the same) showed up along east lullwater below the terrace bridge, or south slope of breeze hill.

Pursuing rarity might be your thing. On my way to the nighthawk watch, and olive sided flycatcher  perched on the dead snag behind Maryland monument. In greenwood Cemetery, mourning warbler is the highlight.ill forward the checklist for more details.

Nashville, Tennessee....and those wonderful Nighthawks!

Location, location and location is a well known perfect qoutation when you get the bird that's good. And anything is possible on a good migratory day. For a work warrior like me, 5 warbler species is a big deal;and to top it off with a nightcap club annual event looking at Nighthawks.

I knew from running into friends and the Tuesday walk it was going to be a good day. Just looking at lists and prospect park check list tells the story. But for me I'm happy just seeing anything under busy work schedule and time constraints. After work I was pulling into the tennis house when I had to stop: two American redstarts had a puddle to themselves, spreading their tails with excitement.Soon I'll be out of here and spend my next hour birding, catching up with my missed day.

On a circuit of butterfly meadow where earlier reports of Warblers galore, I happened to pass the south edge when a Tennessee warbler popped up on coneflower stalks for amazing views. It was a male bird still showing hues of gray and green.

Afterwards, I descended the switchback trail , lately a bonanza spot. Quiet on the way down, I turned left for the weedy area behind the wall. Movement froze me and after a little phishing and patience, I saw my prize bird : A Nashville. Perfect eye level with long looks really does justice with this beautiful bird with the distinctive eye ring.

It's kinda funny my two sequential birds involved the actual city of the state: Nashville,Tennessee.. ( but I didn't see Elvis)

With very tired legs now upon entering my home, after dinner it was back out again for the annual Brooklyn bird club nighthawk watch . And it was a great success. After 7 pm ,something like 8 to 10 Nighthawks appeared in the hour, some flying overhead for great views. Their languid fluid flight is so characteristic and a wonder to watch. Over 45 people showed up . I remembered starting it way back then with just a few Birders before social media..now look at what it has become: A great funraiser for the club!

Stay tuned for leader Karen to post me tonight hawk number s

Hi Peter,

Here's our list from our Tuesday friends walk. We had a strong turnout of 15, and ended with about 5 at 11:30 am. It was a great day and the Butterfly Meadow and the 3 Arch Bridge were especially birdy!

"The edge of the sea is a strange and beautiful place...To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.
